View Full Version : Weird goings on in people's houses- ie: Cold Spots
I'm interested in people's views on this as from speaking to jabberwocky on another thread- there may be things that go bump in our houses that we just dismiss as natural phenomenon.
I know for definite- there is a couple of cold spots throughout our house- mainly these pop up at night, which could be explained sure- the problem is though, that I've investigated thoroughly around the house- and we dont have any cold air coming in from draughts etc so that rules out that possibility.
Another weird things is as well- the cold spots seem to move about the house!
The main places where they crop up is on the 7th step on our staircase leading to the upper level and the top of the stairs on the landing is another place where I can often walk through a warm environment and suddenly meet a cold area - only to move my arm/hand out of the cold spot to feel the warmth a couple of inches out of the area.
So... I'm certain after checking out the possibilities, there must be something else going on 'behind the scenes' ie: ghosties!
I can be sat downstairs with mrs ang to be watching TV and I get the occasional sense that something is watching us over my left shoulder as well from the stairs...
I think I have picked up who it is that is in our house- its the old bloke who used to live here before us for 20+ years, he and his wife lived here before us- she passed on sadly before him and he slowly got ill and passed on as well.
I kind of know its him because for one thing- I know he was a keen gardener and loved to keep the garden in tip top shape which went into decline when he got worse- when we took over the house, we sorted all the garden out and restored it, even now though, I get the feeling someone is watching me when I'm out in the garden- and this is another weird thing as well.
When we were sorting the garden out, there were a few rose bushes in the garden- most of which were dead, all but one- which we have nurtured and kept going for the past couple of years- we were going to bin it, but I had a weird feeling to say dont bin it.
The odd thing about that rose bush- its white roses, and it only grows 2 white roses every time it blooms- no more, no less, even though there are rosebuds on the bush, only two white roses ever appear.
Anyone else had these kind of things happen in their homes?
Jabberwocky 21-06-2006, 16:49 I could waffle on for ages about some of the stuff that goes on here. Basically when I was working nights, my girlfriend used to ring me and tell me of the stuff that was happening, lights going off and on, mists at the bottom of the stairs, ornaments and stuff in the bedrooms moving around, an old rocking horse that a friend gave us rocking merrily away by itself, all kinds of stuff of that nature. I havent personally seen anything here apart from the horse and a few minor things that can easily be rationalised, but Ive heared footsteps approaching me quietly and stand behind me and felt breathing in my ear as I was in the kitchen stealing food and I turned expecting my partner to be there ready to slap me for being a thieving turd only to see...nothing.
Thats all I`ve really experienced that I can definately say was odd, I could mention the lights that move around and the dark shadows that move around the room, but as I`m partially blind that could be put down to my sight.
I`m going to have to try to persuade my partner to get off her arse and start typing here arent I? Trouble is, shes a bloody southerner and I`m not sure that I could be nasty enough to subject Sheffielders to her.
If she reads that last part I`ll be a ghost myself. She`ll skin me alive and use my hide as a chamois leather.
sleepyfrog 22-06-2006, 03:56 I used to be open-minded not believing one way or the other, until I hit my late teens and then starting seeing and hearing stuf all over the place.
Every house I have lived in has had either objects moving, voices or people. Also people around me have seen the same things that they've only mentioned later, and not because I have told them anything.
My sister is 10 years older than me so we never really talked when I was young. However in my late 20s the conversation turned to wierd stuff and when I jokingly said I thought I saw my dad at his funeral she admitted she had to, in the same place at the same time. When I lived at home I would hear noises in my bedroom at night and things would get moved around. My mother is also convinced that when she is alone she can hear someone walking around in my old room and the sound of breathing. When I got my first car my friends mentioned they kept seeing someone sat in the back behind me. 2 seperate people described the person, which was a perfect description of my dad even though he had died 3 years before I'd even met these people at college. Years later I went to a medium who straight off said that not only was my dad was with me, but another old woman who she named and described. She also said my dad goes back to visit my mum and that is who she can hear in the house. Again, it was only a few years ago when I started tracing my family tree that I found an old photo of the woman the medium descibed, inlcuding getting the right name, who is my father's grandma who died in 1932. It's not a name that could be guessed and different to mine.
I also found out from my sister that I had an imaginary friend. My son, who is 3 1/2, sits in his room talking to someone else - he is not just 'talking', it is like listening to one side of a phone conversation. When he was a baby he would also stare at one spot in the living room and laugh to himself.
I lived in an old shared house when I left home that creeps me out even when I think about it now because of the 'poltergeist' activity and old lady who popped up behind you - things that were witnessed by numerous people over the 6 months I lived there.
I've had other experiences at boyfriend's houses and there are some buildings I go into and immediately need to get out.
I did A level psychology, and whilst I do not rule out it being all the in mind there are numerous occassions when several people have seen or heard the same things at the same time, and without having prior knowledge.
At the end of the day, explaining to electricity or tv/radio waves to someone a few hundred years ago would have seemed impossible so I just remain open-minded and think that some day we may get an answer!
MissGobby 22-06-2006, 07:58 well i dunno whether this is true, but when i was younga and in my bed i used to see this man, he used to walk over to my bed and look down at me, this happened every night for ages, then a woman started appearing at the other side of the bed with the man, they used to walk over to my bed then stand over it and look down at me, i was so frightened i just used to put the quilt over my head and go to sleep, it happened for quite a while as well!!! now im not sure whether it was me and these things were in my head, but i can still remember them very clearly!!!
also, things seem to go missing in our house then turn up months later, i had a cd which went missing, i searched high and low around the house, couldnt find it, then about a year or so later.....it turned up in my bedroom, like someone had just put it there!!!
a bottle opener appeared in our kitchen draw, we had never seen it before in our lives, mum phoned her mates to see if they had left it and no1 had, so we dont have a clue where that came from!!!
and i HATE going down in our cellar, i will NOT go down our cellar, it freaks me out really badly, its awful im scared to death of going down it, dunno why!!!!! and i hate been on my own in our house!!!!!
BasilRathbon 22-06-2006, 08:19 I too have had a paranormal experience - there's a certain part of my kitchen that, for some reason seems to always be a lot colder than the rest of the house, no matter what time of year it is. The only clue is that this area consists of a big white object with the words "fridge freezer" on the front.
Well last night, I tried the whole photo the stairs thing- 1am took a few digital photos with the flash on, nothing out of the ordinary came up so nothing to report at the minute.
However, I did get the feeling of being watched again through the bannisters and also the steps on the stairs creaked again slightly on different steps without any pressure on them.
I couldnt sleep yesterday night as well (too much Cherry Coke before bedtime- not good ) so I was sat in my study playing on the PC.
We have a rocking chair in there which we kept from when the old man who lived here before us was here- its such a comfy chair, I thought I'd keep it to compute in, so I was sat in it merrily listening to music and playing games.
I could swear someone was behind me looking over my shoulder- you know when you get that sense that you know someone is there or near you.. exactly like that.
Also when I got up this morning, there was a trace of cigar smoke in the air in the study- me and mrs ang to be are non smokers and the study does not join onto nextdoor neighbours house.
I used to be open-minded not believing one way or the other, until I hit my late teens and then starting seeing and hearing stuf all over the place.

Sounds like you have two guardian angels hun-
I loved reading through your post- the part about your son, my nephew does the exact same thing in my mums living room- he talks to a corner of the room and also calls it grandad which is one of the people who is one of my guardian angels at the moment as well as there is a lady and grandad watching over me and my family- when your son talks to 'thin air' again, try holding out your hand to the area which he is talking to- its usually colder than the norm
I was the same as well, I had an imaginary friend called Claire who I used to talk to inside my mums house when I was a nipper and also there used to be a chapel on wales road in Kiveton Park, and I used to sit on the wall in the garden talking to claire in the chapel area as well- even after the site was demolished, claire still came to visit me according to my mum.

When I was a kid i too had an imaginary friend - a pink elephant called Cedric. The weird thing was he only ever appeared when i swallowed some of the funny pills that dad used to keep in the bathroom cabinet.....

I've felt someone at the side of my bed before in my old flat- I was asleep one night and I was I think light sleeping ish or I was in the light sleeping state before you go go into deep sleep and start dreaming- and I could feel someone at my side of the bed.
It was definitely male and he bent down to look at me so his face was close to mine- I kept telling myself not to open my eyes, so I just rolled over onto my front.. the figure vanished a few moments after that.
I dont know why- but I felt as if the person was wearing a hairy coat of some kind- or it felt like they had something on that was very shaggy and hairy.
Very creepy and I cant put it down to what it could have been at the moment, I've not had it happen again though after that one time.

See the post above yours
Have a nice day though :)
TarotStar 22-06-2006, 09:20 When I was 14 I saw a ghost of a bride at a crossroads close to Ranmoor Church. I was quite literally petrified by the sight, I tried to run but found myself rooted to the spot. The ghost stared at me for around 10 seconds I guess (though it seemed longer), then sort of exploded into shafts of light and vanished.
Years later I told my dad this story. He then told me that several years beforehand a bride had died when the car she was travelling in to Ranmoor church went through a red light at the crossroads.
The validity of the bride's death I can't vouch for. I have tried a small amount of investigation but have come up with nothing. Without knowing an exact year for the bride's death it is very difficult to know where to start with regards scouring local papers etc.
The above post is only the bare bones of my experience with the bride ghost. If you'd like to know the full story I'll post it, but I don't want to bore people with an awfully long post!

Unless the door was always open on your fridge freezer, it should be warmer around your fridge....

Angelus - will post full story this afternoon. Just popping out now! Cheers mate
Trouble is, shes a bloody southerner and I`m not sure that I could be nasty enough to subject Sheffielders to her.
i am aswell and i survived!
Your house sounds very interesting... would love to witness all this.
On of my ex's had a Guardian Angel - and although i never saw him fully i did once catch a glimpse of his outline on bournemouth beach when the sun was going down.
I'll never forget the day we were walking the dog and i went to get some food - while i was away she was mugged - i had our german shep with me so i let it off the lead as soon as i saw what was happening.
Anyway long story short - the dog never made it to have a go - all i saw was this guy go up in the air and down just as fast. while she was lying on the floor and there was no-one else around. it then took 6 months of probing before she told me about Nick, Who he was how he died etc.
Several times when i was at home with my parents we used to get roaming cold - i was on the floor once and i could feel him walking round me in a circle - if i told him to stop it did. One night whilst talking to my GF i was standing in the doorway and something made me look into the other doorway - seconds later i got a bolt of wind, cold and my mobile went dead. After getting the line back i was told Nick was sorry but i scared him because i had looked him directly in the eye., LOL me scared a ghost - i know i am ugly but...
In the end she tried to take me to court for sending apparently abbusive text messages - however when she told them why i had sent that and that we were indeed arguing over a dead man the court threw it out. i haden't even sent her any SMS anyway and that was proved so she put herself into that state. She was eventually sectioned under the mental health act - but nick stayed with me and would daily show me he was arround... if she was mad then maybe i was aswell?
One thing is for sure.. if it was all fake then she had some other gift.. she actually proved that she had something, because she said to me, ( and at that point she had never been to my house) " oh btw nick says he really likes the telephone ornament you have over the fireplace" needless to say i shate myself!
Anyway lots of people tell me i talk crap when i tell them that - so i used to take them to a boarded up ground floor flat in Whitywood Bristol where so many people have been hit and attacked by a nasty poltergeist that it's now been deemed inhabitable by the council. That's my old house... although who the Poltergeist is we don't know - i do know that sadly, about 5 years ago, it drove our dog insane and we had to destroy her.
Well, all i can say is when i die.. i'm giving that poltergesit some SERIOUS ****!...
A few years ago I was ill for a period of time, and this involved very fitful sleep patterns.
because of this I sometimes used to sleep downstairs on the settee so as not to disturb my wife.
One night I awoke to find myself sitting in the chair at the opposite side of the room, which was dimly lit.
I looked around, and saw a person laid on the settee, covered with a decorative blanket.
I got up and walked over, shook this person awake, they turned over and it was myself I was looking at staring back at me.
The feeling of sheer terror that overcame me I cannot describe.
I jolted awake from this nightmare to find myself on the settee with my face jammed into a cushion, covering my face completely.
All the time it felt so completely real, when I truly woke up it took sometime to convince myself it was a dream at all.
I have often wondered if I was at the point of suffocation, and somehow woke myself up?
Wierd :suspect:
Hey awesome thread guys and gals.. I must admit I am a firm believer in the spirit life. Thought I don't think I have seen or felt anything in the past I feel that the evidence of ghosts is just too strong to deny.
My Grandma (she must be very psychic) who lives in Devon has had many experiences in her life time and everytime I see her I ask her if she has seen anything else, and she usually has. In fact many of her experiences have involved seeing/feeling/hearing spirits of pets. I could reiterate some of her experiences to you but it don't feel the same when it has'nt happened to me.
I really want to see or hear something for myself cos im so very interested in the paranormal but I guess it'll be when I least expect it. Its funny cos when I was a kid I only ever wanted to be a Ghost hunter or a Vet. Im now neither!:)

Wierd :suspect:Wouldn't this be classed as out of body experience, which is some thing I have had happened on 2 occations normaly when stressed or upset about something.
ive had the pots lift out of the sink, travel the kitchen and drop, the blankets ripped off the bed,the bed shaking, washing lifted out of the twin tub and thrown ,( the 70,s ) pictures taken down and stood upside down at the other side of the room, items left in one room turning up in another room, hair pulling, the kids when very small both watching the same spot and laughing and both turning their heads at the same time as if following something, its been quiet for the last few years though, all this has been constantly happening since 1970 in the five homes ive moved to
Jabberwocky 22-06-2006, 10:38 Ok, My dearest wouldnt type because shes aparrantly busy with housework and stuff, I offered to do it for her, honestly I did but she reminded me of the time I microwaved the cat, so she gave me a few things to add here.
I used to work nights and when she was alone in the house she used to have trouble getting to sleep because of loud footsteps marching through the living room, up the stairs, along the hallway, into her bedroom, where by this time she was gibbering like a monkey, out of her bedroom and back the way it came.
Mists climbing the stairs.
Sitting in the room in the dark to see if she could spot anything, and a shadow moving around and blocking the lights from the DVD player and Video player etc as it passed.
One from me... I was taking a peaceful dump last year and reading a book when I was hit in the face by a flying toothbrush. I thought at first that I might have "Let rip" a little too forcefully.
Ok there are lots of things that my partner told me of, but I amused my sad little self so much with that "Letting rip" remark that I`ve lost track of what I was saying.
Basically we go through quiet times, and times when something happens every day, a friend suggested getting a priest in but to be frank, I`d rather have the ghost than some religious maniac fluttering about the place.

Hahahaha. nice one!
DaisyBoo 22-06-2006, 11:58 when i lived in my old house i used to see/hear things quite alot. the house wasnt even that old and no one had ever dies in it which was odd. when i was 16 i woke up at 3am to find a figure of a women at the other side of my room, i closed my eyes and opened them and it was still there. i was totally crapping myself so i turned my lamp on and it dissapeared. i was frozen to the spot in my bed and i couldnt get out for about 20 minutes, i got up and ran to my parents room and burst in to tears.
another time when i was about 22 i was walking past the same room as above (i swaped rooms after that incident) at about 8am, it was fully light outside and there was no one in the room. as i passed the door a massive gust of wind shot past me very quickly (like when a train goes by). the windows werent open or anything, oddly i wasnt scared that time and i felt kind of re-assured as it was the day i left my old job and i was really upset and didnt know whether to leave or not.
i never ever felt comfortable being alone in the house, i slept with the light on when i was alone even up until we left there a few months ago.
ive since moved to a very old house which i dont have a problem with at all, ive never once been scared in that house which is odd as it is so old.
there are numerous other things that have happened, my grandma used to see things all the time. my mum wont even speak about it as she says it would upset me to much!
We've had a few weird things happen in this house, but the weirdest one would have to be what happened to my bracelets.
I used to wear 2 gold bracelets both with safety chains..so as you would imagine to get the whole bracelet open the chains or bracelet itself would have to be broken.
I wore these all the time, I never take my jewellery off and went to bed with them on one night as usual.
The next morning as I was sat having coffee, I looked down at my wrist and noticed my bracelts were inter locked with each other. I couldn't get them undone. The only way that this could have happened was if someone had broke the safety chain, interlocked them and soldiered the chain back together again.
I kept them like that for quite a while and gave them to various people to look at to see if they could fathom out how they'd got like that but no one could explain it.
Eventually I took them to a jewellers to examine....there were no breaks in the chains or any part of the bracelets at all and the jewellers had to break the chains to seperate them.
Still baffles us to this day.
As for other goings on.....sometimes when I'm in the house on my own and am in the kitchen, it sometimes feels as if someone has just walked behind me. It's the feeling you get when in a crowded place and someone walks closely behind you sometimes putting their hands on your hips as they pass....and more often than not I get the persistant feeling of being watched while I'm ironing in the kitchen.

This is really spooky because I have exactly the same thing...and some unknown person (or thing) keeps putting a rotten lettuce and a wrinkled carrot in the tray at the bottom, which I cannot remember buying. Is this a message from beyond the grave?
:o
Don_Kiddick 22-06-2006, 12:21 My first batchelor pad was an upstairs council property.

Personnaly (sp?) I don't except the idea of ghosts (or whatever you would like to call then) but as soon as I accept ghosts/spirits are real it would prove an afterlife - which, for me anyway, means there must be some truth to the $holybook
I don't understand how you can accpt one but dismiss the other so out of hand... maybe that's for another thread!

It's pretty spooky when it happens Jabberwocky.....I have to turn around just to make sure there is no one there and it does make me jump sometimes as there are times when I'm sure I catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye.

Well maybe ghosts arent anything to do with an afterlife, maybe theyre like recordings that are stored in the walls of buildings that are "played back" at certain times and for certain reasons..? Maybe theyre the result of electrical stimulus in the brain, I certainly dont know, but I for one dont really believe in gods, ghosts or the easter bunny, maybe its a failing of mine to have such a closed mind, but as I mentioned before on this forum, if I see a DEFINATE god, ghost, or large bunny handing out easter eggs, and theres absolutely no way that I can rationalise it in any other way, then I`ll be more than happy to become a believer.

In my opinion. Just cos theres some truth in spirits dooesn't mean that guy walked on water or theres a heaven and hell. Maybe parts of the bible was just based on some of these and then elaborated. Im not religious at all but believe in ghosts.
Jabberwocky 22-06-2006, 12:41 Dibsy, thats almost EXACTLY the same type of thing that goes on here, I keep seeing things out of the corner of my eye too and have to keep looking around to see if anyone is there, only to see nothing. I have an excuse though because i have very very bad eyesight so I can explain it away like that, but it doesnt apply to other people who come here and see the same stuff.
It's pretty spooky when it happens Jabberwocky.....I have to turn around just to make sure there is no one there and it does make me jump sometimes as there are times when I'm sure I catch a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye.
Hey, maybe you both could try and experiment with what you are feeling. You might feel like an idiot but you could call out "is anyone there?" and maybe even ask them to stop scaring you or ask them to make some kind of sound or visual activity to prove that they are there. Its all kinda a 'most haunted' stylee but ya never know, maybe that proof you're looking for may just happen!

My eyesight is fine and as I say when I turn to look it does make me jump as I'm convinced that there was something there but I never see anything.
I do however have to say though that I am a firm believer in there being something else after this life..otherwise how would we all explain the deja-vous that we have.. I know there's places that I've never been before in my life but when there I recognise things?...Weird!

I`m gonna feel a right berk admitting this, but I tried that back in 2003 and it got worse for about three months. of course that didnt bother me too much because I was working nights but there was hell to pay from the girlfriend when I got home in the mornings.

I`m sorry, I tried to stop myself, really I did.
One think I learned was that if you give the ghost a pet name, then it doesnt seem so frigtening. I named the ghost here "Hector the Spectre" and it works, Once people know the name I gave him they dont feel so threatened.
Just remember not to name him something like "Slasher" or "Night Crawler" and youll be fine.

TarotStar 22-06-2006, 14:14 So the full story of the "bride ghost" at Ranmoor...
As I stated in my original post, this all happened at the crossroads just past Ranmoor church & the Bull's Head pub as you come out of town. My friend and I (both around 14 at the time), witnessed the ghost manifest itself in one of the large gardens next to the crossroads. It started as a ball of light (tennis ball size) floating around 3 feet off the ground. Then the light shot out from the ball shape and assumed the shape of a bride, still floating off the ground. The image was perfect, I could make out all the folds in the dress and the veil, but could see trees, bushes etc. on the other side of the garden through the ghost.
My friend and I were frozen to the spot, and the ghost looked at us for a few seconds, and then exploded (for want of a better word) into bolts of light that flew around the garden and then disappeared.
My friend and I ran and ran, and we didn't stop running until we were on the brink of exhaustion. Then we walked home, and casually said goodnight to each other without mentioning what we had just seen.
For 10 years my friend and I never spoke of that night. In the meantime my dad had told me the story of the bride who died at those crossroads, and I'd put two and two together. Shortly after the event, my friend had poltergeist activity in his home and had a break-down.
Then one night in the pub, I told a gf the above story. My friend was stood next to us playing the bandit. I turned to him and said "Remember that night and the bride ghost?" He didn't turn to look at me, and he didn't reply. He just continued to play the bandit with tears streaming down his face. We've never spoken of it since.
I'm now heavily involved in tarot readings (obviously), and have conducted seances in the past. I have a strong interest in all matter of the supernatural, and I can trace it all back to that night in Ranmoor.
If anyone has any info on the possibility of the bride car crash story being authentic, I'd love to hear it! I saw the ghost in around 1978, so I'm guessing the actual car crash would have happened early to mid-70's. But that would only be a guess.
Wierd :suspect:
possibly - i had an out of body experience when i had my appendix out - i can remember thinking " whats the against my head" and it was the ceiling.
YOu only get them when you are near to death, my appedix had burst so i was close to going
Jabberwocky 22-06-2006, 15:01 Ok, I read about an experiment that a doc and several parapsychologists performed in the 1990s, Its about an operating theater and a plastic rose.
The doc placed a plastic red rose on a shelf that was about a foot from the cieling of the theater. The rose couldnt be seen from anywhere in the theater and the only place it COULD be seen from was if you were to hover at a point thats a foot or less from the ceiling.
The parapsychologists then interviewed every person who claimed of a near death experience while undergoing surgery in that theater and one of the questions was "Do you remember seeing anything odd in the theater?"
Out of 100 people interviewed, 96 mentioned wondering why there was a red rose so near to the cieling.
I`m going to try to find the account of the interviews because I wasnt really interested at the time so I didnt pay it that much attention.
Danny_Boy 22-06-2006, 16:25 I have been in my new house for 9 months now and a few strange thinks happen, like your standard bumps in the night, lights flickering my daughter pulling faces and talking into space etc but all of those things have possible explanations, but one thing that happens has no explanation and is beggining to really annoy me:
I still havent figured out our electronic heating system so the heating comes on for an hour at certain periods of the day/night so during the warmer months I just turn the thermostat to zero in case we are not in etc, but on more than one occasion in the last 2 weeks we have gone out and come home to a bloody boiling hot house and the thermostat has been switched right up to 30 degrees the thermostat is at the top of the stairs and totally out of the way so it could not be anything banging into it or anything like that. The worse scenario was when me and my partner where sat in the front room watching telly and there was a thumping noise coming from upstairs a bit like the sound of my daughter banging her feet on her cot so I went upstairs to check on her as it was late in her room her moses basket was rocking (the moses basket is at the other end of the room to her cot) then I noticed how warm it was the bloody pipes where on again so I went to the thermostat and turned it back to zero. The next morning I woke up with the covers stuck to me the heating was on and it was stupidly hot and I know for a fact that I had turned the thermostat off!
The banging downstairs was so bad 2 nights ago that I thought we where being burgled so I went downstairs to check but found nothing but felt very uneasy like someone was outsite but looking in through the window. After doing some research on the village I live in I found out that there was a massive battle on the site of the village where thousands of soldiers died I cant remember when exactly it was supposed to have happened but that made me think as at night it is a really spooky little village oh and the name Morthen (which is part of the village name) means death in another language I believe.
I would also like to add that I looked out of my bedroom window last night and saw a massive black cat in the fields behind my house I knew it was massive because 5 mins after I had seen it a fox walked past around the same distance away and the cat would have been slightly bigger than the fox!
sleepyfrog 26-06-2006, 02:05 Further to my first post, I will write down some of specific ones. I'll just state the facts and let you make up your minds yourself!
My Dad and my first car.
My dad died when I was 15 just after we moved to a new area of Sheffield. I passed my driving test when I was just 18, and the people I was hanging around back then were new friends I made after my dad died who had never met him. They knew he was dead but had never seen any pictures of him as they never went to my mums house.
Shortly after I bought my first car I started driving places without ever remembering how I got there - mostly this can be explained as the usual 'phasing out' when you drive over familiar routes. However, on occassions I would put the key in the ignition, then take it out again very clearly think 'why am I doing that', then look up to find I was already home. And, no, I have never drunk and driven and in fact don't drink at all even now.
My mother, the first time I drove her anywhere, commented that it was wierd that I drove exactly how my dad did - my posture being the same.
Other things happened, like the radio would be detuned or tuned to other stations overnight, and my rear view mirror would be tilted up to face the ceiling, doors would be unlocked and windows opened.
One day I decided to try and teach a friend of mine to drive, so we went out to some quite tracks near Fox House. As he was going round a bend he lost control and left the road, going over heather and rocks for about 50 yards. When we had stopped and got out to walk off the shock we retraced the route of the car which was clearly marked in the heather. The odd thing was that while there was no break in the tracks, meaning that the car had never left the ground, about 20ft back was a very large boulder squarly between the tracks and about 18" high. Doesn't sound a lot - but was a lot higher than the clearance on the car and we should have hit it, and at the speed he was driving it would have done a great deal of damage. However, there wasn't a scratch on the car.
On another occassion myself, my flatmate and 2 others went to Bakewell. On the way home we were all chatting and pretty rowdy when the 2 in the back suddenly went quiet. I noticed that my rear view mirror was tilted up but as I was used to this just reset it without thinking. They said they were just tired so we dropped them off home. About a week later when we met up again they asked me if anything 'funny' was wrong with the car, when I pressed them they said that while we were driving home they both watched the mirror tilt up very slowly of it's own accord and felt someone sat between them. They had been trying for the last week to convince themselves that it didn't happen until they eventually told me.
After this had been going on for about 6 months I had 3 people, independently and on different occassions, say that when I was driving off they could see someone sat behind me. One got a good luck and described him - a "fat, balding man who was laughing back at him"
I had never, and didn't ever, see anyone in the car, so as a check I took the person a selection of photographs - some uncles, my dad and some non-related people, all alive, who could all be described as 'fat and balding' - he picked out my dad first time - the only one who was dead, and who, when alive, was known for his sense of humour and for doing practical jokes.
Was dad looking out for me when I was a rookie driver? I got rid of the car after 8 months and have never experienced anything like this in any other car.
However, Dad did make an appearance at the first house I lived in after leaving home, but that's another story...
1Man&hisBMW 26-06-2006, 07:47 I too have had a paranormal experience - there's a certain part of my kitchen that, for some reason seems to always be a lot colder than the rest of the house, no matter what time of year it is. The only clue is that this area consists of a big white object with the words "fridge freezer" on the front.
Good one - I like! :D
Jabberwocky 05-08-2006, 16:13 Remember Hector the Spectre?
He`s back...
Hmm, my contributions to the thread.
The corner of the eye phenomenon is most often attributed to minute explosions in the air all around us where certain molecules crash into each other and it can't be seen normally by the human eye and is only perceived peripherally, unless you've been in space apparently. Astronauts have trouble with explosive vision I'm told.
When I was young we lived in Hackenthorpe and not too long after we moved into the house, when I was about 4 I had a strange experience which I remember clear as day.
My bedroom window was close to a street light, my bed was in the middle of the room and parallel to the window.
A figure was crouching on my window sill and clearly shown as a shadow, he climbed in my bedroom window, stepped down onto the floor and stood at the foot of my bed. After watching me for a few seconds he beckoned me with his finger, and walked around the bed to my chest of drawers and wardrobe. He took my vanity case off the top of the wardrobe and opened the top drawer of my chest of drawers, pulled out a random handful of knickers, vests and socks, threw them in the vanity case and left them on the floor.
He then went out of the room and even tually I pulled the covers over my head and went to sleep. (I never do that, I hate sheets over my face but I was scared).
Next morning, sunlight streaming int he room I was full of bravado and went to see where the man went. The spare bedroom door was open. The room contained just a Zbed and a couple of boxed bits but something new was there, 2 matchboxes, right in the corner behind the door and next to the hinges. The matchboxes had a picture of my visitor on them, it didn't strike me as odd at the time, I was so young (hahahaha just realised... strike! lol).
I showed my Dad the matchboxes and told him the story. I don't remember his reaction too well though.
He still has the matchboxes and I think he keeps nails in them on his toolbox or something small.
This is the man on the boxes:
http://www.dover-kent.co.uk/people/capt_webb.htm
I have no connection with him, no interest, no real knowledge other than his name and the fact he swam the channel. No reason for this man to appear in my room, but he did.
Oh, and the case with contents we're on the floor too!
I can't find a copy of the picture which appeared on the matchboxes on the web.
During the early 1970s I was chief reporter on a weekly newspaper in Bury. Part of my job entailed visiting police headquarters and picking up items of news that had happened overnight.
On this particular morning I was told by the Chief Superintendent that the police with dogs had twice been to a local cinema after a man going home in the early hours of the morning had reported seeing someone inside.
The cinema manager was called out to unlock the doors. The police were outside with dogs — but the dogs refused to go inside so the officers searched the building and found nothing.
Around 5a.m. the police were called again by someone on his way to work who had seen someone inside the cinema. The cinema manager was called again, the dogs refused to enter the building for a second time so the officers went through the entire building and found nothing.
The Chief Super wouldn’t enlarge on why the dogs had refused to go in, so I did some digging.
First, everyone in the town was aware that although the cinema was open, the balcony was closed to members of the public and had been so for many years. The cinema’s owners had said it was because the balcony was ‘dangerous’.
I checked with the town hall. If a balcony was dangerous, surely the entire cinema should have been closed down? The answer from the town hall was that it was not dangerous, so later that morning I called round to see the cinema manager.
He still insisted the balcony was dangerous, but on my way out the girl who manned the chocolate counter, which was sited at the bottom of the balcony stairs, told me that during the day — morning and afternoon before the cinema opened at night — all manner of things were thrown down from the balcony stairs and she’d had a few ‘near misses’. She also gave me the address of the woman who was manageress of the usherettes but had been off work with a nervous breakdown for around three months.
I went to see her. and believe me she was really frightened, to the extent of shaking with fear while she admitted that there was something in the balcony that wasn’t of this world. She also told me she’d no intention of ever going back there.
Returning to interview the manager, I told him I intended writing the story and publishing it, and he eventually admitted that the balcony was closed because of whatever was up there. He had been reluctant to give that information because the cinema’s owners had told him it would be bad for business!
Actually, it was good for business! The story made Page One, and there were queues outside the cinema for months afterwards.
That cinema was eventually demolished when Bury tarted up its town centre. Another building stands in its place, and many members of the public go through its doors every day.
I’m now a retired journalist, and I think that if whatever was in the cinema transferred itself to the new building its manager isn’t going to admit it so there’s no point in me investigating that possibility.
However, I know that for my own satisfaction I will ask — one day. If I can see the manager face-to-face, I think I’ll know whether he’s telling me the truth or not.
I think it’s incidental to this story, but the cinema had originally been a music-hall and someone had died there in mysterious circumstances. It’s a long time ago, and I cannot for the life of me remember what those circumstances were.
I do know that as a music-hall its balconies remained open throughout its life, so obviously no mysterious happenings during that period, despite the mysterious death.
In any forumer who is really interested in this subject would like to investigate it further, if they PM me I’ll give them the name — its now a recognised bank — of the current owner-occupiers. Trouble is, you cannot phone them direct. I believe they have a call centre!
