View Full Version : Were you in Lowedges in the 60/70's?
Any of you out there lived on the Lowedges in the 60's and 70's. Did you frequent the Grennel Mower, Magpie, Bradway Hotel, White Hart etc. Did you go to the youth club at the church on the second shops and later the new youth club ran by a guy called John Fair? Do the names Gus, Haggis, Az, Big Willie, Maltby, Ruddy, Rare'un ring a bell???
S8 Blade 21-06-2006, 15:27 not me personally as I wasn't born but I know someone who recognises those names...
Why you ask??
Just wondered what happened to some of the old guys and gals who are probably about the same age as myself (53). I went to Bradway Primary School, later Jordanthorpe and left in 69. I used to drink in the Grennel Mower, Magpie and White Hart, although I left Sheffield in 1977.
jauntyone 28-06-2006, 20:59 Hi Johnh

Wrong about that one mate, I knew the Ogdens, Alan Ogden in particular. He lived with a very good friend of mine about 20 years ago and was really good with his fists, as she found out to her cost on several occasions. :nono:
That particular scenario was brought to a close when he was given a good bashing one dark evening by an anonymous assailant who told him it had happened for the last time and that it was better to leave while he still had the ability to walk. He left a week later when he came out of the hospital.
Who was the mystery assailant?
Nobody was ever charged and I could not possibly comment or speculate on the matter. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
Really hard those Ogdens!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFPMSL
jauntyone 08-07-2006, 09:49 I Stand corrected then matey, just shows you that you can't tell a book by its cover.
I never thought Jimmy would turn out to be a woman basher.
Cheers for that info matey.
RiffRaff 08-07-2006, 11:43 Jaunyone.....Dave O'Brien/Jordanthorpe School?
If 'your' D O'B is mid-fifties now, I was in the same class as him until I left in '67/68....
Nice kid : very fast on his feet (!) - always beat me in the ol' 100 yard sprint on sports day....good footballer, too....
Jabberwocky 08-07-2006, 11:53 I went into the Magpie in 1979.
The sight of one bloke hitting another around the back of the noggin with a pool cue because he won the game added a certain....element of terror to the pint I was drinking.
DeViL_WoMaN 09-07-2006, 22:23 Thanks for the warning seeing as thats my local! lol
jauntyone 10-07-2006, 13:45 Hi Riffraff

I believe that Chris married a girl called Vivienne and lived on Gervase (Avenue?) near Greenhill Parkway in the early 1980s. He moved to either Batemoor or Jordanthorpe in the mid 1980s.
If I remember correctly, he had the 'Mortons Scissors' shop near the dole office on West Street in those days.

I think Haggis is still around Low Edges, or at least he was the last time I saw him about 2 years ago. His sister lives at the top of Gresley Rd, near the bus terminus. I think she may work in the chippy.
He spawned the Son of Satan when his lad was born. B*****d was always in and out of the nick from being a teenager and finally ended up doing a 10 stretch for battering an old lady about the head with a chair leg, just because she woke up while he was burgling her flat. :nono:
I understand that it has been made clear that he will not be welcome, or safe, should he return to the area when he comes out.
RiffRaff 11-07-2006, 08:16 Jauntyone....
Trevor Caswell and David Higginbotham too....
Your story about Haggis ranh a bell too : kid called Harris in my year at school, but don't think in my class....(if you see what I mean!)
jauntyone 11-07-2006, 19:29 Thanks Hagar for the info on Chris Morton, will have to check him out one day. He was a reallygood friend, we joined the TA along with Phill Howard, Geoff Bruce, such happy days.

Was az actually Harold Lawrence, who went on to marry a girl called Barbara and lived next to the Shop-on-End at the end of Low Edges Road, in the 1980s?
RiffRaff 14-07-2006, 22:42 Phailig...
You mention Kenny Cox - I remember him from my school days at J'thorpe.
Didn't the poor lad die all of a sudden, from an unknown heart problem?
Seem to recall that he died on the soccer pitch? Brilliant footballer, and a really nice kid from memory.
Long time ago now - late 60's?
Don't think he made it past his early 20's...
All read in your post about dave O'Brien, a classmate of mine all though from 62/63....Read in another post that he's emigrated to Aussie......correct, or is he back? Any idea?
jauntyone 16-07-2006, 15:17 hi phailig
thanks for buggies other name, being trying to remember it for ages.

jauntyone 16-07-2006, 15:24 Hi Riffraff
I Can remember that Dave O'brien got married to Val, then he went to Austrailia to work. I don't know if he ever returned to the UK.

glitterbug 11-08-2006, 19:20 Hi Phailig, Billy Ash is my cousin, and went on to marry a Scottish girl, and move to London to be a chef in the Post Office Tower resturant (if that is the one that slowly turned round). He now lives in Kettering, where he is still a chef. His mum, Anne, still lives on the maisonettes behind the shops. Just an update for you.
hello glitterbug
yes billy did marry a scots lass, he worked for BT in sheffield then moved to kettering to work for bt as sir ian vallance (BT chairman) as his personnel chef last time i saw billy was in kettering at the george hotel where he worked on a wednesday night, standing in for the chef. that was in 1989, i worked for bt then and we were on a course at the george, havnt seen or heard from him since then.
phailig
glitterbug 11-08-2006, 21:00 I was a bridesmaid at his wedding, i think it was at St Andrews. He has 2 grown up sons now and is a grandad too. Think he is still at the George. I am from Lowedges too but younger than Billy, i lived across from the Magpie, the Allen family.

chattycathy 13-08-2006, 11:46 I am from a slightly later Lowedges - we were on the Drive from 58 - 64 but I was only a babs. We moved to Lupton Road and I stayed there until I got married (at St Petes on the rainiest day ever!) The people who lived around us were, Gary Leavewood, The Thompsons , a whole tribe of them but I particularly remebered Jeannie, The Dickinsons, Michael Jaqueline and David, The Oxleys another tribe, Adrian, David Barry and several others. The Taylors, Karen Booth and The Copelands. There was also Cheryl Bane? Paul Reaney used to live quite close too. Oh and the Collins's - have heard Jonny Collins died recently, commiserations to the family.

Ian Corker here. I have been in contact with Trevor Casswell. Does any one know what happened to Chris Barrett?
If you look on friends reunited there are some former classmates there. I am thinking about documenting what happened to us all. I know that Martin Havenhand became a Chief Executive with Yorkshire Forward, Peter Cowen is a golf pro in Rotherham and Dubai.
I really doubt that most of us could have done as well if we had been born 30 years later. Look at UpMyStreet for Lowedges
It is really depressing.
Best wishes
Ian

Morning Ian...
Think Chris went back down south to pursue a career in art/design...
It's all a long time ago though, so who knows what he eventually got up to (or where!).
I know one of our classmates (for the life of me I can't remember his name) was featured in The Star many years ago, 'cos he'd become a top chef and was the big boy at some reallly posh 5* hotel in Hong Kong.
The Fox twins I mentioned? A senior moment! Actually the Fowlers, Peter and John....
Saw Max Brook in Uncle Sam's on Ecclesall Road many years ago, but nobody else for 20 years plus...
Didn't know about Martin....so one of us made something of themselves, then!
Thanks RiffRaff,
Ian

RiffRaff 23-09-2006, 13:09 Ian...
What's Trev Casswell up to?
Last time I saw him he'd just bought a (I think) Vespa scooter!
And how many years must that be?!
30+ I guess....
RiffRaff 23-09-2006, 13:11 In fact, Ian, the last time I recall seeing YOU....
In your front room - we'd had a bit of a party, and your Mum walked in, looking a bit disgusted with us....
Think I stopped overnight.....probably a good idea!
Can you send me an email to iancorker@gmail.com
Mick Hempsha 15-04-2007, 09:49 Hi Just come across this site and saw my name mentioned - I lived on Toppham Way when you could see the Peak District from our living room window before the estate became as large as it is now. Remmber loads of guys and girls mentioned but would love to know where my old mate Phil Pywell (might be spelt wrong) or Kieth Grant are now.

Would this be Keith Grant who lived on Gervase Avenue, his father Sid worked at Express Dairies on Broadfield Road and brother Dave went on to play left back for the owls? If so, he went on to become an asphalt roofing contractor with his own business and is still working in the trade.
Mick Hempsha 16-04-2007, 20:44 Thats the guy. We both worked as van lads for the S&E out of the Millhouses depot and left to become apprentice ashpalters with Amalgamated Asphalting Company before I left to join the army - I also remember David and watched him play for the owls - Have you any contact details for Kieth as we spent our early teen years together -got ****** most nights in the Norton when it was a proper pub and escaped being picked up by the cops (we were only 15 when we started) but got checked out three times for our ages when over 18Great days.
Mick Hempsha 16-04-2007, 21:05 Hi
We lived and my mum still does live on Toppham Way and I have a photo of me and a load of other kids standing on a heap of sand just as they were laying the foundations to the Magpie. Remember playing in fields in front of our house before the road was finished, the massionettes, the church, the school and the shops built. Have loads of fond memories of Lowedges when it was a brand new and friendly estate. We visit my mum regularly and find it now to be a run down dirty place. Remember fondly the family who lived next door to us 'The Smiths' Roger, Ralph and Susan in particular and their mum who was a fantastic friendly and loving lady who made everyone welcome. Ralph spent his younger days kicking **** out of me - I think they call it bullying now. But inspite of that we all got on well

The last that I saw Keith he was living in the Dronfield area but I'm not sure if he is still there. I will attempt to find out more and will PM you if I do.
Keiths dad Sid and brother Dave still drink in the White Swan at Greenhill so I presume that Keith does also. Unfortunately, I don't go in there anymore but I have had many a good evening in there with the three of them in the past.

MagicLady 20-08-2007, 18:34 Hi,
I lived on Lowedges Road during the 60's and 70's. I know most of the people you mention, did the Gus you mentioned have a brother called Herman? I used to knock about at the Grennel Mower end of the estate with the Irvins (worm and podge), a guy called Bernie, Chris Brookes, Ian Handley, Ian Hudson (my cousin) to name but a few. Does anyone else know this crowd?
S8 Blade 20-08-2007, 18:41 . Remember fondly the family who lived next door to us 'The Smiths' Roger, Ralph and Susan in particular and their mum who was a fantastic friendly and loving lady who made everyone welcome. Ralph spent his younger days kicking **** out of me - I think they call it bullying now. But inspite of that we all got on well
My step-family have 2 of those names, but not one! Don't think they ever lived on Toppham though. Lupton when I was introduced to them in late 80s.
EDIT: i've just asked my step-dad and says it wasn't him lol
alex3659 20-08-2007, 19:00 I believe that Chris married a girl called Vivienne and lived on Gervase (Avenue?) near Greenhill Parkway in the early 1980s. He moved to either Batemoor or Jordanthorpe in the mid 1980s.
If I remember correctly, he had the 'Mortons Scissors' shop near the dole office on West Street in those days.
tony morton married viv ,lived on lowedges, batemoor, and now now lives at chapel st leonards, was with him and his brother pete last weekend..
MagicLady 20-08-2007, 19:38 Is that Tony Morton got a brothe callled Philip?

hagardriley 24-08-2007, 11:58 Hi,
I lived on Lowedges Road during the 60's and 70's.
My best mates daughter used to hang out with Paul (podge) Irvins 2nieces (twins) who lived on Gresley Road back in the early 1990s. I think their dad was called Don, would he have been 'worm?
I remember them relating a story about how, one Sunday, podge was visiting his mother, who also lived on Gresley Road, and notices that she has had her house re-decorated throughout. Looking very nice Mum says he, but it must have cost a mint to have it all done at once. Oh no she replies, I bought all the materials and a chap who goes in the Grennel Mower did the job for me for £100, cash in hand, and it took him a full week. Podge duly enquires as to who the individual could be that could afford to do all that work, and do such a good job, for so small a sum for a weeks work and Mrs. Irvin duly obliges with the nice mans name.
The following day the chap in question, none other than Alan Ogden (RIP), gets a knock from a couple of blokes who introduce themselves as fraud investigators from the DHSS, one of which was Podge Irvin. I've come to ask you about the undeclared work that you've been doing says podge, to which Alan replies no idea what you're on about. Podge then explains the circumstances about it being his mothers house that Alan had decorated and proceeds to have him nicked, prosecuted and his benefits claim thrown out. :shakes:
Alan was wrong to have done what he did but I think under the circumstances Podge Irvin could have turned a blind eye especially as it involved his own mother, who was also culpable for employing Alan in the first place. Needless to say, old Mrs. Irvin never appeared before the magistrates for her part in the whole episode. I actually corroborated all this with Alan Ogden, it was before we had a falling out, and he confirmed it to be true.
None of this came as a major surprise to me as Podge Irvine was a nasty, snidey, horrible piece of work when he was a teenager and seemed to have landed in the right sort of job for someone of his disposition.:twisted::sad:
MagicLady 24-08-2007, 16:35 Hi, no worm was Steve Irvin not Don. A sorry story you relate that much is true but I have to disagree the Podge Irvin Iknew wasn't all the things you say. I never found him to be a nasty, snidey, horrible piece of workand NO before you ask I didn't go out with him he was just a mate.
hagardriley 24-08-2007, 23:05 Hi, no worm was Steve Irvin not Don. A sorry story you relate that much is true but I have to disagree the Podge Irvin Iknew wasn't all the things you say. I never found him to be a nasty, snidey, horrible piece of workand NO before you ask I didn't go out with him he was just a mate.
I take your point. Take people as you find them and treat them accordingly. It was that way for me with Alan Ogden. We were mates until he started living with a very good friend of mine and eventually started using his fists on her and ended up one day with a knife at her throat threatening to kill her. He left shortly after (see an earlier thread) and never bothered her again, but I had lost all respect and patience for him by that time and we never spoke after that.
Yes to all the above. you are obiously a few years older than me judging by the names mentioned. you probably know my brother Josh. he still goes in most of them places.
I Stand corrected then matey, just shows you that you can't tell a book by its cover.
I never thought Jimmy would turn out to be a woman basher.
Cheers for that info matey.
Jimmy wasn't a woman basher and you are right, Jimmy was a good bloke. Like any one else if you wronged him he stood his ground.
my grandad charles burnand & nan peggy lived at 104 atlantic rd,lowedges they had 7kids,all daughters bar a son called derek,do you or any 1 remember this family?

Hi to everyone who posted. I have lived o Lowedges for most of my life and know just about everyone mentioned plus a few more. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned John Brear (RIP) He was a good bloke. Ozzie doesn't seem to have had a mention either.
alex3659 14-01-2009, 18:56 Hi to everyone who posted. I have lived o Lowedges for most of my life and know just about everyone mentioned plus a few more. I'm surprised no-one has mentioned John Brear (RIP) He was a good bloke. Ozzie doesn't seem to have had a mention either.
used to know john brear , haggiss ,and most people on lowedges .
i moved from 328 gervaise ave when i was around 7 years old my father is called peter richardson & he used to virtually live at the white hart pub, he also parked the blue c,r,pursehouse lorry that he drove in the small layby opposite the maisonette block by the main road, , i remember a family on our block who's surname was wilkinson, & i think the lady next door was called martha, my mother pat also worked at a local wine shop just down the road from the church by the roundabout, i also remember the barnes family were good friends of ours. happy days
I was born at home in Lowedges 1968..7 Lupton Drive. My dad was Keith Woods, mum Andrea,Sisters Mandy,Adele, brothers Julian,Heath,Clinton,Todd and myself Shane.Mum n Dad used to go in the Magpie with Susan Parkin n her husband,(they divorced and she moved to Redcar)I can't really add much as i was a bit young, but i remember the Hansons,Jane,Buster,Mark and Jill.Think i can remember Magpie landlord, did he have a big red nose?or was he just a customer?Clinton went on to be a World Champion boxer.
My grandma and grandad lived on gresley road 1963 onwards and i think my uncle peter is still there.
I new Jimmy and his brother Allan, yjey lived on the cres.
My family lived in the block of houses called Lowedges (Chesterfield Road South) 21 houses if I remember.(The Ellis family lived at 21)
I didn't see much of Jim once I passed the age of 16 that was 46 years ago.
Lowedges was a good place then The Magpie, Grenal moor (which I frequented in the late 60's as my father stayed in the houses I mentioned until he died in 82.
I heard that the Magpie deterieted (bad clientell) later 70/80's so I hear.
I even had a part time job at the Magpie approx 1966/67
tinachenn 29-05-2009, 00:21 MY Mum Julie Grimbley used to live at Beckett Avenue in the mid 60s and my Dad Mick Bullifent lived next door, they married in 1968.
Tinachenn,
I don't think I new anybody off Beckett Ave.
But the name Mick Bullifent seams to be familiar, Prior to the(Lowedges) park being built (Elliss's had a farm, my brother used to help out and I'm sure there was a Mick Bullifent used to be there also. (This period was before Jordonthorpe & Batemoor came into existance. Just fields)
(I could be mistaken regaring M.B but he sure doies sound familiar) My brothers name is Mike Garton, he lived at 12 Lowedges in the block of houses before the farm.
garthai
alan and jimmy ogden lived on low edges drive at no 21, yeah magie has really gone down hill, must know you as we always went in magpie during the period from 1966 to 1970, i even spent my wedding night in the best room with charlie hotchen entertaining the locals,
Good to here from you!
I stand corrected, yes they did live on Lowedges Drive.
I was there around 1966/67 for sure. (Magpie)
I started working on pipelines 1967 initially in the Sheffield area. Although Sheffield remained my home base until 1982 I spent very little time there. I moved into Derbyshire (Nr Bakewell) again only based there until 1995.
I now live in Thailand.
Hello Jeff
Tony Crapper here. Remember Argentina in 1981? I hope you are well and in good health.
Yes,
Remember it well.
Health no problem although I'm a bit heavier.
What are you up to & where are you?
I`m still in Sheffield. I started a building business soon after Argentina and it did very well, and continues to do ok. I live in Bradway, so not too far from the lowedges, my dad still lives on Lowedges Crescent.
Do you know what happenend to the other lads from Argentina? Brian Kent, Tony Cornish, Ivor?
Whats Thialand like these days? It sounds better than going in the Magpie!
Brian & Ivor live in Coumbia. (their wive's are friends I don't think Ivor & Brian speak much)
They are both married to Columbian women, Brian has a son.
I worked in Ecuador a few years back, Walley was the client. I only did 1 trip (12 weeks) and I arranged for Brian to get some work there.
Last time that I saw Brian was in Dubai just 1 night, I've not heard from him since.
Not too sure of the other Liskeard lads, Tony etc.
Thailand's a good place to be, cost of living is 100% better than the U.K
Having spent the last 2 years on Sakhalin (Russia) I've decided to retire.
But if the something that I fancy turns up, I may go back to work.
Bt at the moment I'm enjoying myself, My son & myself have just returned fro Oz (he's nearly 11) we went to Sydney for 4 day's then upto Brisbane for rest of the 2 weeks holliday, visiting the theme parks on the gold coast.
Tony drop me a line to garthai@yahoo.co.uk
Eighties Gir 01-08-2009, 11:10 Darren was my 'first boyfriend' in 1979! I was 9 and he was about 11. He used to walk up to Greenhill School from Lowedges to see me at lunch time.
His loss was a tragedy.
andrejuan 01-08-2009, 13:21 Tinachenn,

This is ringing bells with me...... There was a family lived on Beckett (if that's the one that runs down to the shops and the Grennel Mower?) called Bullifant, they had a daughter, and there was some connection with a farm I think. A previous post mentions a marrage in the mid sixties but that couldn't have been these people I don't think? unless it was his second wife??
gloriagrace 26-08-2009, 18:18 My Mums family were from Lowedges '$Thompsons' lived on Gervase I think.
tinachenn 26-09-2009, 22:38 Hi there, yes Dad had three sisters, Anne, Kath and Jayne, him and Mum got married in 68 (the year i was born). Mum was definately his first wife lol

barnesjimo1 11-11-2010, 23:26 Wrong about that one mate, I knew the Ogdens, Alan Ogden in particular.
ROFPMSL
