hopefully it'll be completely different. V bar was terrible. it was dank, dark, the beer tasted cr*p and there were swastikas and racist comments all over teh walls of the gents.

the place was a dump!

I think that particular unit must be jinxed. Everything thats opened up in there has failed quickly.

It's on west st muddycoffee, I can't be more specific as I never quite remember what is next to what there (I wonder why...:partyhat:) although I think it may be kind of opposite nando's!

I'm afraid I haven't heard of nandos either.

I am assuming this Bar was once either : -
The Bee Hive ( Later Firkin )
The Hallamshire ( a once superb pub and gig scene with central bar and lots of rooms )
And the Mailcoach or whatever irish pub it became afterwards

Other pubs I know about are Varsity, Swim Inn, West Street Live etc, but I am pretty sure that they are all still like that.

funkymiss

The hallamshire is now BRB but I'm not sure about the other ones...

The rents are so high on west street I'm not surprised bars fail. There's property on that road that have been empty since I was looking for a bar. Unless you've got a major pull or are a brand name, such as Nandos, then you will struggle to keep up.

You still looking for a new CRB?

Not actively, I'm fairly happy DJing at the mo....but if an offer came along that I couldn't refuse, who knows what would happen.

Hmm, been v-bar for four and half years now so not done too badly :loopy:

Suely that has nothing to do with the bar but more poor drainage

Also dumb women that drop tights, glasses, bottles, knickers and god knows what else down the toilets, blocking them up

Have you ever been in, at least in the last year or two? Sounds nothing like the v-bar was before it closed.

Thats right, the v-bar will be closed for 2-3 weeks and will return with a new name, new look, new door policy, new music policy and refurbished toilets.

Nice selection of fine cocktails, with properly trained bar staff who know how to make them and have some product knowledge! I'd like to be able to go for a decent drink on West Street rather than having to venture further a field on my nights off! :)

I'm getting out myself... I'm a bit sick of working nights and unsociable hours. Been involved in setting up too many cocktail lists and bars and running bars etc! I wish you all the best though... just make sure you get it right! There's nothing worse than a bar thats trying it's best to get it right but just being off the mark. I'm aware I'm a bit of a snob having spent so much time getting trained and getting involved but there's nothing more I hate than a place doing cocktails and doing it badly.

Start off with just a handful of cocktails, a few classics such as the cosmo, margerita, mojito, and then maybe a few twists. Make sure all the staff know those and then start bringing more in, impress from the beginning. Don't start with a massive list and disappoint!

Oh, and get a few nice Rum's in. I don't mind paying up to £10 a 35ml shot for a nice Rum... :)

key thing is though make sure the staff know what they're doing. it looks so bad when they don't!

One of the best things you can do (if you can afford to it) is run little mini cocktail competitions in house. It gets the staff to compete against each other to try and produce the best cocktails. It's amazing how soon they start trying odd little creations using things that you wouldn't expect, although invariably there's always somebody who pulls a recipe online. The only way you'll ever get top quality staff who really understand cocktails is by letting them create their own.

I make a fantastic rum drink with plums in that just tastes outta this world, and a few other odd ones that I'd never have come up with if I didn't have a little bit more freedom at boho than I've had before. It it wasn't hard enough juggling managing the bar and studying at Uni then I wouldn't be leaving.

Running a bar is a full time job, cant believe anyone would attempt to juggle both :o

The cocktail list is all but finalised unfortunatley and the menu's have gone to print but we do want an experienced mixologist to maybe help with some staff training if you know of anybody?

Would punters really go for cocktails in a (no offence) run-of-the-mill West Street pub? I wouldn't...

Erm, thats why its getting a refurb, so its not a "run-of-the-mill" West Street pub :loopy:

Why put "no offence", is that supposed to make it unoffensive?

I have no doubt that when it is complete the new-look V Bar will be like Kubla Khan's pleasure-dome.

Good luck with it and all that, don't forget to place orders for some toilet door locks :)
