DaBouncer 04-06-2004, 14:27 Forum is going from strength to strength.
Congrats to everyone, because everyone (moderators / admin / members / lurkers) all contribute one way or another to it's success.

Excellent

Can we name and shame the 5,000th member... ahem .. I mean give them a prize ;)
Well done Geoff,
A very useful web site for finding info out about Sheffield.
You should get an award from the Council for services rendered in promoting Sheffield. I may even nominate you if I get time.
Maybe its time to sell out and become a dot.com millionaire;)
Geoff Bowen - MBE
Looks like my traffic predictions from the start of the year have gone to pot then
It was somewhere between 5000 and 7000 IIRC
Apart from the mods who was the first regular member????
Can that be answered??

They were probably banned... :P
Seriously though... I will scan the database and see who the oldest (and still active) member is and report back here :)
Anyone else find it odd that only the computer and narcotics industries refer to their customers as 'users':D
I must be one of the first regulars who's still active. I'm a mod now though, so may not count.
jackthedog 04-06-2004, 15:03 Excellent news Geoff!
Glad its doin so well!
Nice one!
If you have time oh great mods it would be quite funny to see list showing various stats and facts

That sort of thing
Great site, keep up all the excellent work, you people.
For the younger among you, Mr Gumby was a Monty Python character - the two syllables were reversed from a well-known northern expression!
Classic Rock 04-06-2004, 15:14 I'm so glad that it's going so well....I first wandered onto the site to blatantly advertise the Classic Rock Bar (oops, there I go again) but have stayed to add comments, arrange get togethers, and find out information.
The gossip that flies around on here is fabulous. If I ever want to know anything about anywhere in the city, this is the site to visit. Someone always knows the answer or knows someone who knows.
I've seen the most obscure questions appear and be answered within hours. What a clever and informed bunch we are!
Lets rock!
Mr.Wibbles: I'm not sure about having enough time to do all of that, but I can tell you that Sidla is our longest standing member, he joined on Dec 14, 2002. As for our longest standing active* member (who isn't a moderator) it's 'Sheffco' who joined on December 29th.
(*Active means someone who has posted/visited in the last month)
The first topic to be discussed was 'Channel 4 program on selling houses' started by a Guest user. A TV thread in General Chit Chat??? Oh how times have changed
No... the original thread 1 is here:
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1
How did I find it? I did a search on my own posts and went to the last page of the results...
;)
(Of course I could have just added 1 to the threadid part of the URL... doh)
I knew my simple selection of the first page in General Chit Chat was flawed..oh well
which topic thread has attracted the most posts....
Anyone know the latest figure for the total population of Sheffield? Are we getting close to 1% yet... hehe :D
513234
Nearly there !!!!!
Thanks to all the links (via MSN etc). It appears to be some confusion over the exact figure (after all people die and are born everyday!) but according to the 2002 estimate here: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/facts--figures/population/2002-estimates
It's about 512,000.
It appears (from all sources) that Sheffield's population is declining over the years - so even if the forum doesn't grow any more we will still reach 1%... woot :P
Looking forward to chaning my sig to:
"1 in every 100 locals is a member of this site :-)"
Not every member is from Sheffield though. I wouldn't be included in the stats as being a part of the Sheffield population because I was here (Leicestershire) when I filled in the latest census.
Bah... misery guts.
Not all the users are from Sheffield, but then again not everyone counted in the last census necessarily still lives here, also some of the people who are registered and living abroad are expats - who probably lived here during the last census... lol
All in all, I wouldn't worry about it Sid - just sit back and enjoy :)
(To keep you happy, I will be sure to add an extra 100 or so to the user figure before I celebrate the 1% mark - it won't be for a few weeks anyway)
Update: Sidla just (accidentally) reminded me that I've also deleted several 100 inactive users over the last year - so that makes us even closer to the 1%... lol
Congrats all round.
We could hire out the Arena for a get together :)
Congratulations and well done to everybody concerned.
bulldog D 04-06-2004, 20:53 Happy 5000th Geoff and all those unique characters out there that have made this place such a success. I going to celebrate now by having a drink for you all!

Nah, im inclined to go for the Aussie firefighter who is partaking in the Firefighters games in the summer
Seriously though, we have some members living in America and Canada so Kent is pretty close in comparison.

No, I'm the one with Largo LaGrande avatar, Geoff is Geoff. No mod is considered 'main'.

1) I'm only 3 and a 1/2 hours away from you, and in this day and ages with planes etc, America/Canada is only 6 hrs to get to Sheff!
2) Oh right, no-one is a "main" one.
I must be feeling very happy today as I thought i'd bring this post back to the attention of everyone. Having recently read quite alot of post re : mods and are they fair etc combined with me reading how Sheff Forum started I just thought I would big up the mods and thank them for all their hard work (voluntary) they put into this Forum. I think sometimes we take it for granted and don't quite realise the hard work that goes into it and keeping all us opinionated buggers under control.
Cheers Mods
(before anyone comments..yes I know it's a bit kiss ass but everyone deserves some praise now and again and we all know how sensitive the Mods get)
