View Full Version : Can anyone help with a wireless network problem

ive just got a wireless router thats all installed and working on my pc downstairs on my pc upstairs i have installed a wireless networkcard, it picks my network up but says i only have limited access and may not be able to access the intenet. does any one know why this is . pleease please help.

Its not got an IP address probably, Check that either the DHCP server on the router is enabled, or in Control panel -> Network connections choose your wireless adapter, right click, properties, and assign it an IP address (192.168.1.10 should work) with the gateway the IP of your router.

thnx joel tried that its got an ip address and it says it was assigned by the dhcp server. have you any other ideas. ive been tryin to get this workin since saturday lunchtime. tried 3 different adapters and its my second router . the first router i could'nt get a signal at all this one just has the above problem. its drivin me mad and i av'nt got much hair left now.

What does it say the DNS servers are? and the gateway and what IP has it picked up?

If you have a valid IP, I would have a look at turning off/allowing firewalls.

Otherwise, are you using WEP :?

But you may have done this already.

What is the IP BTW?

turn off the WEP and see if you can connect then.

Also, what IP has your machine been given?

What is saying Unknown Protocol, and when is it saying it, and does it say anything else?

The message Unknown Protocol means simply that.. something is trying to use or connect to or look at some kinda traffic using some kinda protocol for trasmission of that traffic, and the something doesn't recognise the protocol.

its my adapter that says unknown protocol and the orange light on the router above wlan turns to red and then i cant connect at all

dont know what i have done but its up and running . but thanks for your help guys. its only taken me five days to sort it. how can i find out what speed my broadband is running at.
