I'm starting a couple of City & Guilds (Level 2) courses come September, in Embroidery and Machine Embroidery (and possibly also in Jewellery and Ceramics).
Has anyone here ever studied such courses, or similar City & Guilds qualifications? How did you find the experience?
I did C &G ceramics a few years ago, loved it.I was worried that the class would be full of young uns but as it turned out i think i was the youngest one there, you will love it, gets the brain working again.
Thanks for that, LHarman. I did a 'taster' ceramics course a few years ago, and I've been eager to do more ever since; I just haven't had the time.
I remember just after the film 'Ghost' came out, it was virtually impossible to get on a pottery course then. I signed up to one at the Woodhouse centre of Richmond College just before the mad rush. It was great, but vastly over-subscribed, so I didn't get much of a go on the wheel on that course. It was mainly slab building.
I'm just investigating sewing machines for the C&G course too. I didn't realise they were quite so expensive...
M friend did the embroidery course, its amazing what they do.I wonder if the shows are on yet? it might be worth calling the college to see when the end of year shows are on, they are usually fantastic,Why not look in the ad mag for a sewing machine. The problem with ceramics is that when you do an evening course, theres very little time to make anything, most of the time is spent up clearing up after yourselfthe C and G is much better
i am a NVQ assessor in hairdressing,we follow C&G different subject but same framework, the courses and assessments are pretty straight forward and you can be orally questioned on a lot of the contingencies etc...have fun!;)

I'm actually in Leicestershire, so it wouldn't be much use to you if you're in Sheffield.
What you could do is look at the City and Guilds (http://www.city-and-guilds.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/SID-0AC0478C-A76172AA/cgonline/hs.xsl/3929.html) web site. They have a search facility whereby you can input your postcode and it brings up your nearest centre.
Also, have a look at Learndirect (http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/). They have an excellent search facility where you'll be able to check on City and Guilds courses in your area. Click on 'Advanced Search' to be able to narrow the search down a bit.
Good luck finding a course :) .
