Apparently in the seventeenth century the locals (working class) lived in filthy cellars mostly half full of dirty water. They existed on scraps of food, never changed their underwear-if they had any at all! And the average life span was twenty one years. The ones who lived in the city centre around campo lane area, threw the rubbish and sewage out of the window into channels which ran down the centre of the alley where it lay stinking in the sun-in summer- until the rains came and washed it away. Anyone have any complaints?. Halevan. 5/2/03. :D

Old Sheffield Town by J Edward Vickers

Found this funny: In 1854 a man called Harvey Teesdale floated down the River Don from West Bar, in a basket pulled along by a number of ducks! Quackers :D

What type of air would you like smog, effluent, Coal burning smell, pure oxygen. Ye I can see the thought in in. Could do as well as the music museum tin cans.

And of course there was the tropical swamp period.

And beaker people.

We used to dream of living in a filthy cellar, half full of dirty water. Would have been like heaven to us.

Sorry, the Monty Python in me couldn't resist that.

Read George Orwells The Road To Wigan Pier, he has some not very complimentary observations about his visit to Sheffield. Its not about ancient Sheffield either, it refers to the 1930s.

Wish I had more time to answer your request. Also , if you could narrow it down a bit , that would be helpful.
However , one good thing you could do without too much trouble is check back on some of the threads on S.F. , especially this one. You may not get much of a response if people have already written quite a bit about their Sheffield experiences.
Incidentally , I really love maps and started collecting them , a Sheffield one being the first , in 1950.
The first one I had of Sheffield was a "Geographia " map and , for example , showed the inner and outer circle bus routes in a sort of brown colour and all the other bus routes in red. The postal districts were bordered in blue , I think.
The map that I had wouldn't have differed much from your map , I shouldn't think , mainly because of the war. On the other hand , I think quite a lot of private and council house building went off between 1935 and 1939 , so maybe my map differed on the outer fringes.
Anyway , good luck with your research !

Don't know what you want but the United Kingdom was created at dore around AD875 when all the warring factions decided to call it a day and decided to have a joint King, the pow-wow took place there, you'll have to do your own research on this one.
