Hi, its my other half's birthday tonight and I want to take him to an american restaurant. We've been to Old Orleans in Centretainment, and I don't particularly want to go to Yankees since I just rang them and the gentleman (ha!) at the end of the phone was INCREDIBLY rude to me.

I've heard Uncle Sam's is good, but is it really suitable for a "hopefully" romantic evening.

Any help would be appreciated.

At Centretainment there's also Frankie and Benny's.

Further out near Meadowhall there's TGI Fridays.

Both are excellent.

Yeah, I was thinking of Damon's but its just a bit too far out. However, they do that thing if you bring in your ID, to say its your birthday.

I was thinking of Frankie and Benny's but its got some bad reviews and that put me off. I really want something special for his 21st though. Does anyone reckon if i offered to pay a bit extra, Frankie and Benny's might stick some sparklers in an ice cream or something. i know I'm leaving it late, but I've been away and not had chance.

All the food at all the places in the Centertainment complex is terrible and overpriced, I really would give it a miss unless your not botherd about paying over the odds for microwaved crap.

Frankie and Benny's is a great place - I couldn't give it enough thumbs up!! I'm sure if you rang them, they'd arrange something for you!

No, the point is that if you take ID to prove it's your birthday - the birthday celebrator eats for free :)

I'm still torn between Frankie and Benny's and Damon's...

the thing is, i've been to Damon's before, and I know its good, but we're going from city road and back so it just seems a bit far away.

I know that, thats what i said, but they've not always asked for the ID.

City roads not that far from Damons, which way do you go? Have you had the onion loaf? :-)

We'd have to go into town and then catch a tram from town to crystal peaks cos I'm wanting to book for about 9 and the 123's don't run till late.

I won't be going back, I learned my lesson. The person was asking about places to eat so gave him my views on centertainment, I can't comment on the places people have suggested as I have not been to them.

Mmmm, Uncle Sams don’t buy anything other than a cheese burger, its one of the best in Sheffield the cheese is amazing (very similar to yummys or as they used to do not been for a awhile) and the train going around above your head ah memory’s I always wanted one of those trains..........

As for damons good take away, but I refuse to sit in a restaurant with kids running around and why oh why do they make you eat of plastic plates!!!!

The ribs are good, but thats it.

Just my opinion though, small expensive portions is not very American in my view.

I'll second that, but its not very romantic is it, the only thing i dont like about uncle sams is that theres not privacy at all.

To stick up for TGIs (as it's my favourite restaurant) they've never got my order wrong.

Yes, the singing is annnoying, but if you tell them you don't want to be sung to, they won't.

Don't worry. I will do. I don't think I've ever been spoken to in such a way whilst trying to book a table somewhere.

Frankie and bennies or Boardwalk at centretainment are good.We go to Boardwalk a lot, loads to choose from on the menu, and staff are friendly and accomodating on birthdays.Should be able to book at short notice too.

Dont go to Uncle Sams! We went about a month back and I always remembered it being really nice when I was younger but it was horrible.
My drink had pink lipstick all round the glass....I dont wear lipstick!
We were shown to our table and there were fries allover my chair and lettuce all over the table.
We ordered and they brought the wrong food out, so we waited ages for it to arrive and when it did I didnt have a knife and the girl serving us said Id have to wait as they hadnt managed to wash any cuttlery yet!!!

Even if you choose to go, the romantic atmosphere will never happen coz the place is heaving with kids running around.

EXCHANGE BAR AND GRILL.

It's very good indeed. I have been around five or six times (four in the last 6 weeks alone!).

The burgers are superb with plenty to choose from. And their corn on the cob is fab.

I actually went there with 14 others for my birthday the other week. I've been back since then and must admit I'm growing fond of the place.

It makes the likes of Damon's look the wooden catering-by-numbers stodge that it really is.

It would be Damons for me. F&B is totally overpriced with such tiny portions.

Frankies and Bennies is crap food with tiny portions. Boardwalk isn't too bad and Old Orleans is nice especially that big ass 20oz stake they do. TGI's tops it for me though - the shrimps are gorgeous.

My personal experience of American fast food in Sheffield is not very good....tried most of them over the last year or so and not been especially impressed. They generally seem to operate on the principle that no one has ever been to the States or have the faintest idea of what American food should taste like, excluding Mcdonalds (which is far from its AMerican version over here anyway). Also, the menu range is rather predictable and a tip of the iceberg compared to REAL American eating houses....

But, unless you have actually eaten real American fast food in New York, you probably wont share that opinion. The real thing on native soil is the only true way to experience it....its the same with Indian food, you have not had a proper curry unless you sample the delights on offer in the world famous Bukhara restaurant in Delhi.....even my fave Sheff Indian restaurant, ELINAS in Sharrow Vale, does not come close to the native experience.

perhaps a cheap return flight to NY? I can recommend a number of superb establishments that really do satisfy......and an experience to remember forever....

I think that's just a little out of my league...I'm only a receptionist / office dogsbody!

We ended up going to Damon's cos I spoke to one of his friends who said that he's been apparently wanting to go there for ages.

It was ok. The Lobster tail and clam chowder were both really nice, but the onion loaf was freezing cold and the chips were hard and not very nice. My other half said the same, he said his meat was cooked to perfection but he didn't like his chips. Mind you, the birthday cake was nice when we got in!!:hihi:

I'm going to find out what that red sauce type thing is that they serve with the onion loaf, that was really nice.

You failed to add

served in Butlins type atmosphere where you are herded in and out;

the 'food' is both overpriced and usually overcooked. To say that ribs are your speciality is an affront to spare ribs;

discount given for families who let their kids run amok; and

that it's 'eating out' for people who don't eat out.

The only thing missing is the fella to call out the numbers on the bingo balls.

I think we went at the right time, because there was hardly any kids in there. That and our waitress refused to sing anyways so we didn't have that to worry about that.

Might be going to frankie and benny's next week for my birthday anyways now, but he's got something planned and he wont tell me, so I'm getting a bit worried
