View Full Version : Bum deal cos I'm NOT a student
JamesRich 03-06-2004, 08:31 Just wanting to get something off of my chest and wonder if anyone else feels the same way as me.
Before I start, this is not a dig at students.
I went into Sheffield Town Centre on BH Monday night with a few friends. Why is it that just about every pub we went in offered special offers on drinks when you produced a student card or a discount card which you can only get once your a student. Muggings here (who has been going to these pubs for the last 10 years) has to pay full price (which wasn't cheap). To top this all off, we decided to finish our night at Kingdom Nightclub but to my utter discust, we weren't even allowed in because we're not students.
Come on. Is it just me or are people who haved lived in Sheffield all their life getting a bum deal. I say they should introduce discount cards and special nights for Sheffielder's and locals.
Anyone else?
uncleheed 03-06-2004, 08:38 It's ****** me off for ages.I knoe they bring a large amount of revenue in but do they really deserve all this discount? It also ****** people off who py £11 a week for a bus pass and they only pay £8.
Worse still is the bogus students. You all know who I mean, the immigrants who arrive on bogus college courses and get the NUS card so they get discounts galore.

If we all know who they are why hasn't anyone reported them to the Universities, the police or even the immigration authorities?
uncleheed 03-06-2004, 09:11 so you've never seen one of these then Max?You really should get out more

I don't know, this used to be a great country...
JamesRich 03-06-2004, 09:40 Aren't we going off the point a bit here?

Yeah iv'e had the same problem too. I like to go out mid week instead of weekends really gets me going!!. I was in Edinbugh the other month and went out on a wednesday night, I couldn't get in anywhere because I wasn't a student. Student prices for beer etc should be more expensive thatn regular prices to stop the majority of them blowing all their money away (:P waits for the abuse now from every student on here)
Clubs etc run student nights because it makes them lots of money. Students tend to spend silly amounts on drink, and giving them a couple of quid off gets them in there for the night
JamesRich 03-06-2004, 10:08 I'm not saying clubs shouldn't run promotions, but what is the point in not letting me in because I'm not a student, It's all money in the till at the end of the day.
What I would really, really like to see is a mass boycot of these type of pubs/clubs by Sheffielder's over the summer months when the students have gone home.
Lets see if they would turn down my money then.
I don't think so!!!
DaBouncer 03-06-2004, 10:21 Sign up for a college course... get your NUS card and drop the course... only make a part payment on the course and it should work out better for you in the long run on discounts you get.
Not that I'm advocating student fraud here or anything.... [Insert innocent whistle smilie here]
Agent Dan 03-06-2004, 10:50 I agree with DaB - if it bothers you, become a student!! There are loads of courses which require only an hour a week, and then you can quit and keep the student card anyway... some IT ones are even free (although probably mind-numbing).
The reason the discounts are offered is because most people who work full time don't go out late in the week, so the clubs need to get a certain number of people through the doors to meet overheads (stop me if this is obvious)... the reason they don't let non-students in on a Monday is to keep violence to a minimum, as most students don't cause trouble in the same way as locals. Monday is often 'student night' at clubs cos no-one else goes there otherwise...
oh come on is it that bothering?
i go out a lot on a weekend and have to pay full prices. it's only certain places where there are discounts.. i dont use discounts in any shop apart from music shops i.e. virgin/hmv and they are nationwide.
in varsity (pub) almost anyone can get the discount card for a quid.
so shut it.
well being a student i think its a fab idea, but i wont b 1 for ever!
but tbh i hardly use it!
maybe cos i amnly go out fri, n there no discount then!
apart from in empire glas on wine for a £1, now thats a deal!
but for kingdom if you want cheap prices, on door, ring up n get guest list tickets £2!!!!!!!!!!!
Mosherchik 03-06-2004, 14:57 Im a student and TBh I hardly use the card, I use it to get student admission on cinema tix and thats about it! I forget about the whole whopping 10% discount they offer in some stores :D
I tend to go out when theres deals on drinks for all and not just us taxdodgers :P and lets face it on nightclub entrance if youve got a student card its only about a quid cheaper!!!
But I have to admit I do think the banning non-students to a nightclub a bit odd... I know the student union do it but youre allowed to sign people in on your card, and as for student discount cards - ie Yellow Card in Scream pubs, my non-student friend waltz off with mine... get about 5 people using same card and they never check signature on back
...top tip get yourself a student buddy
mr.blaze 03-06-2004, 15:06 You can obtain student discount cards quite easily without being a student. Yellow & V-Cards can easily be obtained without student proof. Knowing someone at a sheffield college who knows the system is also a way of getting an NUS Card.
As for U-Cards they are hard to obtain and forge.
Rich.....i see your point exactly, just becos your not a student why are u refused entry at kingdom?!? when i spoke to a promoter who used to do an event at kingdom, they told me they had to do their nite NUS only, becos otherwise the thugs from Pitsmoor would come down and make the event all moody.....however, i feel a better door policy would make more sense. there is no need to alienate people just becos they arent students.
i was once turned away from a manc venue cos i wasnt gay, it did my bloody head in for ages......
Greenback 03-06-2004, 15:20 If you don't like it... go somewhere else? What a load of wittering over not very much at all :loopy:

Yes it is that bothering, and no, not just because I have to pay a quid more for a pint on a Monday night.
Its about principles.
I'm just asking for a bit of fairness. If theres a discount for one person, there should be a discount for the next person.
Right, thats enough ranting for now!

Like me ;)
What pubs offer student discounts? :o
Probably most of the pubs in heavily student populated areas such as Crookes, Broomhill etc.

How did they find out you weren't?! I'd love to know their methods...haha
To be honest, the vast majority of pubs don't offer student discounts. Only a few chain bars. And the chain bars inflate their full price drinks to make their offers look better. just go to a normal bar/pub and pay normal prices.
It's not like students get discounts forever, it's just for a few years. I don't really see the big problem. never bothered me before i was a student.
student discount bars, theys more, jus cant mem them all!
empire
walkabout
cav
most on west street
etc
...er...I worked at hallam and have...er...shall we say "aquired" an official uni stamp...works wonders....young persons railcards etc. Unfortunatly cant "fake" NUS cards anymore since they went digital but there are many benfits :)
LittleWitch 04-06-2004, 09:28 I agree with some of the posters on this thread, in that you should combat your problem by taking up a part time/evening college course, and get equal treatment that way. But why quit the course once you've joined?! There are loads of courses on offer that aren't crap and boring, and you'd be learning a new skill to put on your CV at the same time as enjoying freebies and discounts for a year!!!!!
DaBouncer 04-06-2004, 09:33 Just said quite so he didn't have to pay the full course fee.
However I fully agree with what you're saying!

Then what's the point of having a 'discount'? You just want cheaper drinks...
There are plenty of places in town where non-students can buy cheap drinks. There were 2 guys dressed up in kangaroo outfits advertising Walkabout's £1 drinks night on Wednesdays - and it isn't limited to dodgy vodka and coke - you can get bottled beers (like Tooheys!) etc.
If you 'shop around' you will find plenty of places, mainly during happy hours, where you can enjoy a cheap drink in town without having to be a student.
Until they recently changed it, I enjoyed the occasional £1.50 pint of Stella at 'Revolution' - which was available to everyone and ran for several months.
If it's about principles james then i think you are just annoyed because it's something to moan about. Student nights are there for...wait for it... students! They put them on in association with the University's Union for a cheaper night out for students so they can be around other students as well.
I don't personally go to these nights but I'm sorry If you don't like it go somewhere else.. Week nights out(late clubs) are primarily for students because they don't have full time jobs (yet).
LeagueFan 10-08-2004, 14:11 I work at a student bar (and i was a student), and this issue really winds me up. I get aggresive locals who have a go because I won't give them student discount, and how they hate students. The amount of money that students bring into this city and the fact that they go out throughout the week is incredible. Without it there wouldn't be half the bars in sheffield that there now.
I don't know who said it but the student discounts and special nights are all about making money out of students, and without them duringthe week, your favourite bar might not be there at the weekend.
The reason for student only nights is for safety, the students feel safe, and you don't have the meatheads going round student-bashing.
my last point, I can't speak for every bar, but standard prices in my pub are on par, if not cheaper than those around us. The student discount isn't about inflating standard prices, just another way of getting them to stay longer and spending more over the bar.
I've tried to not give away where I work, becuase that'll just be another reason for sheffield residents to come and have another go at me!

I bet he was trying to get in The Cossack!;)
Snakey_B 11-08-2004, 18:18 Ive had problems midweek at both leadmill and rep , the times its happened it isnt a "student night" to do with the two uni's. Few times they have asked for ID ,showed them drivers lience followed by " NUS card ?" to which i have to blag myway in saying im part time at college and dont get a ID card. Why shouldnt i be aloud into these nightclubs cos im not a student ? All my friends bar myself and another are students but with these type of daft rules i run the risk of not been able to go clubbing with my mates ,which is wrong.
my question is how do they know you are not a student. ive never been once asked for my nus card
LeagueFan 12-08-2004, 11:32 I know that some "student" bars are students and like minded people. I'm guessing that these student nights you're all refering to are run along similar lines, which is really an excuse to stop townies going in. I doubt they'd stop you if you went out in your scruffs and wore trainers!
richynomates 12-08-2004, 11:53 why would you want to go to a night where you'd be a minority non-student anyway? what would you talk about? i was a student, and student nights are good when you can join in conversations about how crappy a levels were, and how rubbery the SU food is, and how you think a lecturer may fancy you, but once you're not a student, the appeal of student nights aint that great. that's why they're cheap.
I was at uni in Hull and almost all the weekly student nights were student only....I can see why but it just makes students and locals hate each other more. Integrate. Without students Sheffield would be f****d and with pj Jump it was so need to compromise....
Snakey_B 12-08-2004, 19:59 What would i talk about ? Id talk about normal things to the students , christ just cos your not a student doesnt mean you both cant have a convo!
I wanna go these nights cos as i said my friends are students

I went to Uni there too and on the occassion that drunken local came into contact with drunken student, most of the "integrating" was between fists and faces... :)
