I'm wanting to learn to swim, I'm 25 years old and terrified of water but want to overcome this fear.

Does anyone know of anywhere that do good lessons and would be kind to me because I'm practically having a panic attack just thinking about it!!

Hi my mother-in-law has swimming lessons at the swimming baths on penistone Road (hillsborough leisure centre)she has them on tuesday afternoons i also think they do a lesson sometime on a friday for adults. she too was absolutely scared to death when she first started. she was 60 when she started her lessons. hope this helps.

Thanks, I live in woodseats so that's a little far to travel as I don't have a car or anything...

Does anyone know of anywhere near woodseats?

Have you tried Heeley baths on Broadfield Road? Might be worth a try

get someone to chuck you in the sheffield canal - you'll find that you'll learn to swim remarkably quickly in there.......

A friend of mine learnt at a place in Devon where they do an intensive 1 week residential course - I think you can get there by public transport. Very good by all accounts, and they have a very high success rate. Downside is that it's a bit expensive (more than I can afford, unfortunately), but I could dig out the details and PM you with them if you're interested.

That would be brilliant CaptainSwing, an intensive course may be the best thing, then I have no time to freak out between lessons.

Also sharpend, as I don't live to far from there that may be really helpful. And thanks for the encouracgement people. I've got a couple of weeks of work coming up and I want to give it a go then. :)

Nice one - keep us posed

BTW I think the Devon place is called Tavistock College - They sometime advertise in the Sunday Times/Telegrapgh - swim in a week guaranteed..

No, that wasn't the place my friend used (about which I've PM'ed Zimily) - but a quick google has revealed that the place my friend went to is going to be redeveloped as a hotel at some point - that was the news in January 2006 anyway.

I just saw this advert here on the Sheffield Forum. http://www.ponds-forge.co.uk/content.php?nPageID=84

They have swimming lessons at Ponds Forge for both children and adults :)

Thanks everyone.

I have a couple of weeks off work from next week so will look into what you've provided me with. Better go by a swiming costume now!!
