I've just been to Heeley Green and had a look at what used to be Potter's Snooker Hall. There isn't much left of the roof. It must have been a big blaze.

Banksia 03-06-2004, 07:12 I live in Australia but was born and raised in house next door to what was today Potters Snooker Hall. I am very saddened by the loss of this piece of local and personal history. When I was little my grandmother worked there as an usherette. The managers name at that time was funnily enough, Mr Potter. My grandmother told stories of the days when it was a live theatre. My brother and I would play and explore the building, there were lots of little rooms upstairs which were obviously once dressing rooms. My mother also worked at the Heeley Green as a cleaner and later on, when it became a bingo hall and reopened as a cinema I worked there too. When ever I "come home" for a visit I always go to Heeley to my roots to once again see The Waggon and Horses, Heeley Church, Anns Road School and until today the Heeley Green Cinema. Today is my 60th birthday so I will never forget the day I lost MY little bit of history. Xootom 03-06-2004, 11:24 Here's a site with some info and pics about the cinema. http://www.rocknroll.force9.co.uk/cinemas/cinepho8.html micksheff 03-06-2004, 14:23 Heres a couple of pics theres not much left. http://www.angelfire.com/my/text/potters/potters1.htm Waggon and Horses pub on the left http://www.angelfire.com/my/text/potters/potter2.htm Sam Miguel 03-06-2004, 16:17 It really looked dangerous last night. Some of the remaining bits looked like they were ready to fall. Plain Talker 03-06-2004, 18:44 It is sad... more and more of the city's cinema heritage is lost. The star reported today (3/jun/04) that the process of demolition was well under way. As has been mentioned on here, the building is extremely unsafe, structurally unsound, and it is necessary, for safety, to demolish the entire remnant of the building. Arson is still very strongly suspected. They made me cry though. It sounds silly I know, but I was born and raised next door to that place until 1973. Like an old friend having gone ! Sam Miguel 06-06-2004, 12:32 Just thought I'd let you know that this week's Speaking of Which will be in memory of the place. Watch out for it on Thursday. hinchy2 27-09-2005, 09:46 Dear Banksia I was very interested to read your story about the manager of Potters Snooker Hall. Mr Potter (Tom) was my grandfather and I would love to have some more information about him. I know that before he became the manager at Heeley Green he was on the music halls PLease respond |
