View Full Version : Arise Sir Dave Richards!
Mantaspook 17-06-2006, 07:59 Just heard on the radio that Sheffield Wednesdays former chairman Dave Richards has been awarded a knighthood for his work as chairman of the Football Association.
A well deserved award for a local lad done good
CHAIRBOY 17-06-2006, 08:08 As a shareholder of Sheffield Wednesday, I don't share your enthusiasm. I think Richards must take much of the blame for appointments - knock-on bad signings - that have placed the club in its current situation, when he was chairman of the club. Like many Wednesdayites, I was amazed that he'd got the temerity to apply for his FA role, given his record at Hillsborough.

Are you joking??
barnie41 17-06-2006, 09:51 Er, even as a blade I would say you need to speak to Owls fans to see what they think of this one. I've met none who have a good word for him.
CHAIRBOY 17-06-2006, 09:55 I've just seen another 'one', Sir Bobby Robson, hob-nobbing in a box at Lord's at the cricket One-day International. Just goes to show that anything is possible if you move in the right circles. To hell with who you've used to get there!
barnie41 17-06-2006, 10:07 Bobby Robson - great manager, recognised internationally for being honest, trustworthy, trophy winner. Also recognised as one of the great and good of the football world.
Well worthy of knighthood.
Local lad done good my @rse
Do I detect hints of belligerence here :suspect:
CHAIRBOY 17-06-2006, 18:09 Most certainly. The man left many Sheffield Wednesday fans with a very bad taste in their mouths, remember the failed Charterhouse deal? Do you recall the "I won't sack Danny Wilson" pledges? Honourable, I don't think so. He told the Star, physio Alan Smith was leaving Hillsborough to expand his private practice at Wickersley. Real reason for Smith's bust up with Francis was the manager's desperation to play one of his costly signings with pain-killing injections rather than rest the injury. Smith wouldn't tolerate such unprofessional action and left, even though he was good enough to continue his work with England. Richards was cornered into admitting the truth at the next AGM! Like many of the high-flyers, they just feather their own nests and **** on the people beneath them.

Spot on!
This was a man who promised us the earth and delivered **** all.The ground improved but while Richards feathered his nest down at the FA in London the club began to slide. At the same time his company 3 star engineering went tits up"my then employer was owned 40 000 off them"and he bolted of south.******
Dave Richards.... what a bloke......:loopy: did naff all for wednesday... but looked after himself quite well!!
Steve1969 18-06-2006, 15:30 Dave Richards was more concerned about his role at the FA than about Wednesday. He, without doubt, is the person responsible for Wednesdays decline.
I'm sure that we all remember when he didn't renew Big Ron's contract when he was at The Owls for his 2nd spell. He came back when we down & out & pulled in some good signings to keep us up; somehow! Remember Emerson Thome! DAVE'S thanks was 'a big thanks' of not renewinging his contract after he kept us up. Me thinks it was so he could get his own back for Ron walking on us the first time!
We've been in decline since!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Dave & a well deserved GONG; NOT!!!!!!!

Surely it was more of a team game, I seem to remember Joe Ashton and three other labour MPs (David Blunkett, Bill Mitchie and Clive Betts) creating merry hell at Hillsborough, Ashton allegedly claimed to know little of the financial dealings or transfer decisions which have created the current situation but most commentators were incredulous given his fiduciary responsibility as a director.
In fact it was this “gang of four” (http://www.4thegame.com/club/swfc/news/58414/GANG+OF+FOUR+LAMBAST+WEDNESDAY+BOARD.html)that led the calls for Danny Wilson to be sacked, given Wednesdays propensity for sacking managers when they hit a losing spell (like they did with Francis & Pleat) I could understand Richards pledging support for Wilson in the forlorn hope it would bring some stability, but it was a bridge too far as they lost 14 out of the first 19 games.
Do you recall the "I won't sack Danny Wilson" pledges? Honourable, I don't think so.
He didn’t sack him – Richards resigned as chairman in January 2000 and Wilson was isolated and sacked by the board the following March, since then we’ve had Shreeves, Paul Jewel (sacked), Shreeves again (resigned) Yorath (Resigned) Chris Turner (sacked) and now Paul Sturrock.
Anyone see a pattern here?

...for services to bankruptcy DR (debt ridden)

I didn't say he did sack Wilson. GIven the poor results you quote, it was this obduracy in not sacking Wilson that I was alluding to.
The "Honourable" question relates to the Francis/Smith bust-up that he tried to keep from the public by saying Smith was extending his practice -economical with the truth might be the best way of describing it.

CHAIRBOY 20-06-2006, 09:06 A pal has just told me that quite recently, he read a broadsheet in which Richards was said to have his eyes set on a seat in the House of Lords, so the knighthood should advance that desire quite nicely, thank you!
