crowefan 15-06-2006, 12:35 Has anyone got a pug out there?
I am interested in buying one, I have three other dogs , all of nice temperment, can anyone give me any tips and info about them????
Plain Talker 15-06-2006, 12:40 not a criticism, just a suggestion:-
if you have room in your house/heart for another dog, why not consider a rescued dog?

I don't have one and don't know a huge amount about them except the following:
They are very social dogs and become very attached to their owner and cannot be left alone in the house all day.
Due to the extensive breeding to meet breed standards, pugs are very susceptible to various medical problems, mainly involving their eyes and respiratory system. They can't tolerate much exercise, or high temperatures. They get very wheezy and often require frequent visits to the vet.
They aren't good with children and aren't very good at being housetrained.
After reading the above, I'd get a rescue mungrel if you want a dog. Not some genetically bred mungrel that might look funny, but hasn't been bred for any other reason other than that. (And health implications were definetly not taken into account!) I am pressuming you want a pug because they look funny!
A friend of mine has one who plays with her labs as though she was one herself.
Howver, twiglet is right, I wouldn't get a pug simply because you have to walk them an antisocial hours before it starts to get warm and after it's cooled down because they can't tolerate the heat, they have trouble with a lot of exercise, although, like I said Lilah plays with the labs ok.
The breed standard holds problems for the breed itself due to it's appearance affecting the way it breathes etc. but I think part of it, is what lifestyle they're used to living in so it's how you bring them up.
Don't go into it lightly though, thoroughly research the breed and visit a breeder. You could do a google search for Pug Breed Club UK aswell and see if you can get chatting to other pug owners and they usually have some breed articles.
Good luck.

Or because he has heard they have nice temperaments/good with other dogs/likes their characterists/charisma :loopy:
crowefan 15-06-2006, 13:23 I have thought of a rescue dog but have had an awfull problem with one before,I have to think of a breed ( or mongral) who is sociable with the household and that will fit in. I have met a friends pug, who is all personality. but I do want a dog that will run, be happy, and be treated like a dog and not a fashion accessory
I love the look of pugs, (no I dont think they look funny), but I do like the thought of them being bright, sociable and "difficult" (I have three terriers who are just that).....
I guess I jjust like the look of them, but I have to balance cost, personality, and availability as well as wondering why I want another dog!

I have a friend who has three, so I have observed their behaviour and mannerisms closely. With regard to intelligence, I would say they are about average - i.e. not stupid, but not particularly bright either. They love and need human contact and as has already been said get attached to their owners. A problem with having more than one is they tend to get very jealous of each other - particularly in relation to human attention. They are not aggressive and are most unlikely to bite you, although they will fight with each other if you have more than one. They quite like exercise, but tend to tire quickly, particularly in hot weather. Their fur is actually quite wiry and tough and certainly not as soft as you would imagine. If you want a quiet life, you would be well advised not to bother, as you can usually hear them breathing. They are prone to respiratory problems due to inbreeding. They may look nice with their big eyes and quizzical expression, but personally my advice to you is not to bother - the pug will be very jealous of your other dogs and will be constantly craving your attention. They are also very expensive to buy I believe.
Or because he has heard they have nice temperaments/good with other dogs/likes their characterists/charisma
That's why I said presume, as I didn't know the reason, but thought this because that is the reason they have become popular, and I thought if he is asking about pugs, he doesn't know about their temprements.
I wasn't critising, it just severely annoys me that so many nice temperaments/good with other dogs/likes their characterists/charisma
dogs get put down every day, when there are people out there that want dogs, and get them from a breeder who makes money out of fashion accessories. If it was up to me, breeders would be banned from breeding dog's until the situation with rescue dogs was a little better.
Don't want to affend anyone by saying the above, my choice personally would be to give a life to an unwanted dog before paying a human to breed one.
crowefan 15-06-2006, 14:45 I understand the rights and wrongs with getting a rescue dog rather than a pug
but can I ask about advice specifically about pugs ( with respect I am old enough and ugly enough to have the rescue dog debate with myself)

crowefan 15-06-2006, 18:01 lol no I wasnt!! especially as I am a 44 year old bloke!
I hate designer dog owners!!!
rubydazzler 15-06-2006, 18:15 Pugs are great, a sort of shorthaired pekinese but less arrogant :D but they also snuffle and snore a lot and they are a bit jealous, bit of a one-man type of canine. You need to be prepared to keep the wrinkle above their noses clean and also have to take particular care of their eyes too.
They don't like the heat and they soon get tired of walking, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak! Other than that they're fine.

i'd agree with everything lordchaverly said.
they do make great pets, but if you have other dogs already, they will get jealous, but my mum and dads lives happily enough with a cat and rabbit, although she's unsure about the rabbit.

missmode 05-07-2006, 09:49 My nan used to have a fawn coloured pug and she was lovely apart from the fact that her hair seemed to be a never ending moult. She had a lot of attitude one of those dogs where if she wanted to be fussed or cuddled she'd let you know.
Yes they seem to moult all the time worth it though
Mrs Sue Lee is a Pug Breeder, she sells to show and pet homes but she is always willing to give and share any information on the breed,in fact I don't think she talks about anything else!!
So if anyone wants any Pug info give her a ring. (Contact me for details)
