Should they be left up or down? What's the big issue here? I often see people use this in arguments and even as a reason for breakdown of a relationship.

Edited to add 3rd option as I realised I couldn't vote in my own poll!

I always leave it down for my better half. I don't like to be looking into the toilet anyway when I walk into the bathroom.

It's just polite from my point of view.

Seat down, but lid up unless I'm using it as a stool (no pun intended) when the boy is having a bath.

the lid and seat should both be down. this way the toilet is more hidden and smells are kept in more, and you can't accidentally drop things in it. women often like it so that the man leaves the seat down but not the lid as this is most convenient to them, but really this is just as selfish as a man leaving both up. seat AND lid down is the best way IMHO

If you follow Feng Shui then they both should be down anyway. Having the lid up makes you money luck flush straight down the loo!

In my household there are 4 males to 1 female so i say leave it up.
But my young 4 and 2 year olds although told on every ocation to lift the seat up when you tinkle goes through deaf ears and most of it finishes on the seat itself or on the floor.
So for household a definate UP.

Whilst "peeing": both up.

Whilst "pooing": seat down; lid up.

After a stinky poo: seat down; lid down.

Otherwise: seat down; lid up... (why put the lid down if it doesn't smell...?)

Is that enough info, or shall I go on...?

you've obviously never experienced 'accidentally-dropped-toothbrush-down-toilet' syndrome then? if you had you'd know why the lid should be down! :D

If the biggest problem in life is whether or not the toilet seat be up or down, then I think you are doing well.

Generally I don't care. My only concern is with my kids. They come to a point in their lives where the toilet is a fascinating place and fill it with allsorts.

So on that basis I would say down. But not bothered.

Men can get such a hard time about leaving the seat up after visisting the little boys/girls room.

I am not even gonna mention splashing the seat..!

Is it not a little unfair that women get an easy ride here, I am a bloke of the seat lifting variety, but I get angered when after doing so, I can get a urine soaked thumb!

Not a pleaseant thread (sorry Geoff) but nor is it a pleasant experience, and needs raising and discussing.

Also when I go to sit down and direct my tackle in such a way that I will not cause any `splash-back` I can find the tops of my fingers in the same predicament.. ewww!

This does not happen all the time you understand, just like some blokes lift seats and put them down after use.

But wondered if any other men have experienced similar occurances?

Or thoughts perhaps?

I always lift the toilet seat. You can't stop the occasional little 'splish' and I personally hate it when I have to sit down on a toilet seat that has little pee-specks on it so it's best just to lift it up and play safe.

As Craig says.......it's not like it'll break your back. ;)

Very good lads, but that was not the question.

Point being, how often do you hear women get picked about their lack of efforts?

And is this fair?

Its probably not fair, but thats the way things are.

If you were to pick on your woman about her lack of effort on things like this then you may as lift the seat up and flush your sex life down the toilet.

Simple really - men should lift the seat to urinate and then put both the seat and the lid back down when they're finished.

Women should lift the lid up and put it back down when they're done.

The lid is the crucial thing - splashes when the flush is pulled can spread around the whole bathroom, so the lid being down prevents this from happening and also prevents the risk of dropping anything by accident down the toilet.

Women are lazy by insisting the seat be left down, men are lazy by trying to keep the seat up. Both should stop bieng idle and put the lid down too.

As there are two males and one female in our house, the toilet seat is left up after a stand-up transaction has been carried out by me or my son. For sit-down transactions, however, it is left in the down position. As for my wife, she always leaves it down as she only transacts in sitting-down positions, unlike me and my son.

You see: you never know who is going to need it next so it doesn't really matter.

It's just habit.

I generally sit down to use the toilet to be honest, this means the seat is down most of the time. If I do have to lift the seat up I do it with my foot, which means I don't have to touch it with my hands.

I'm sure I heard that the seat should be down when you flush otherwise an aerosol effect distribiutes particles of ... unsavoury content (carrying viruses and bacteria) in the air of the bog which you may then inhale. I think that was supposed to be how diptheria spread in pre Penicillin days. But then I suppose you should check for floaters after the flush...

Now how about another toilet poll guys (girls can't play): one hand, both hands or a pair of tweezers?

In our house it's seat and lid down cos our cat drinks the water if not. He's facinated by the sound of the loo flushing and always comes running when he hears it. I tell him to beware sometimes and I'm suprised he's not dead by now! Dumb animal and a typical male - enjoys bodily smells! Ugh.. men!

Can you inform the managers of Crystal Peaks of this please ? The new loos have a super-flush on them and spray water everywhere if the lid aint down. The wall was dripping and I narrowly avoided being drenched :(

Loo lids should be automated to close prior to flush action

no i think it should be the other way round

men should put the seat down after use

and ladies should lift them both up.

because after a lady has just been it probably will be the guy going next unless she has a week bladder or drinks emense amounts.

It should always be closed before flushing. Flushing an open toilet causes germs to fly at least 6 ft, which would probably mean most people's toothbrushes would be within reach.

However, our main reason for closing the toilet is to prevent the cat drinking from it as he doesn't like plain tap water.:gag:

P.S. What inspired you to dig up this old thread, Don? :D

if toilet seats were meant to be up the underneath would have been made to look prettier and there would be no lid. since when things have lids the idea is to close it when not in use. this means that the seat should remain down in order for this to happen and be used in the way in which it was designed.

Why do men stand to pee anyway ? I have never known a man yet who can aim straight ! There are three males in my house and I for one am sick of getting wet feet every time I walk in the bathroom ! Do you think it is a territorial thing - you know, like cats ?

Becuase it is the natural position to be in.
That is like saying why do women sit down.
How old are the men, they must be either babies or senile.
If they cant aim straight at the bog, then they must be covered in it, I bet they smell lovely on a hot day. :gag:

Seat and lid should always be kept down (unless in use of course!). It's simply hygienic that way. My dad can be at my house all of an hour, but if I go upstairs the toilet seat and lid are up - what's so difficult about putting them both down? I don't want urine and god knows what else splashed all over my bathroom because someone has flushed with the lid open!

Actually men could just as easily sit down to pee as stand up - its just something they are taught as little boys. REALITY CHECK - am I actually discussing the position that people pee in on an open forum ?

not neccessarily - it is possible for a woman to do it standing up if you know how but would be difficult to aim in the right so not really practical for toilets - OR, could just not wear socks!

A toilet seat is perhaps like a lock gate on a canal: its position reflects the movements of the last user.

Should they be left up or down?

what if you are in a country where they often don't have toilet seats?

or what if they have one of those funny squatty things you get in france?

or what about simply just a hole in the ground?

I have been told that leaving the toilet seat lid up (temperature wise) is equivalent to leaving a window open, such is the heat trnsfer through the water to the sewer pipe.
So in winter you actually waste money by leaving the lid up.
However, as with most of my 'facts', you may take that with as many pinches of salt as you desire. :hihi: .

Lid and seat down, mostly to stop the cats from drinking out the loo.

I am really lucky - my hubby is one of the few that sits down (relic from running a pub, seeing what a mess is left by poor aim, having to clear up said mess and not wanting the same in the house!)

Does no one care about the germ spread by the toilet flushing? That's the main point of the lid to restrict the water splash and the resulting germ spread.
With the lid up the germs can radiate to a circumference of around 6ft I'm told. Lid down - different story.
In our house the lid goes down most of the time, my fella forgets sometimes.
