Right im kinda fuming so please bear with me!

I couldnt find anymore on the DVLA site. So im hoping someone on here will enlighten me and hopefully put me back in a good mood!

We've got a private reg and are there any rules on putting it on a older car? I dont think there should be as its private plate but someone said you cant put it on older cars cos of the letter it starts. But private reg doesnt not go by the letter of that year.

What the hell is the point of having a private reg and paying all that money when you cant put it on the cars you want! It doesnt make sense!

Someone please tell me different!

:help:

You can only put it on car that is the same age, or newer, than the age suggested by the numbers on the plate. For example, a '54' plate can only go on a car which was first registered after September 2004.

If you have a plate that is something like 'P123 ABC' the same applies, but for the initial letter. You'd need a car which was originally registered in August 1996 or later for a 'P' plate.

HI FUNKYUKGIRL, HOPE I'M NOT GOING TO MAKE YOUR DAY WORSE THAN IT'S BEEN BUT!!!! IF THE PLATE HAS GOT A LETTER TO INDICATE IT'S YEAR ,THEN YOU CARN'T PUT THAT PLATE ON A CAR REGISTERED BEFORE THAT YEAR.

It's so that you can't pass off an older car as being newer than it actually is.
If this wasn't the case some unscrupulous dealers would have a field day.
Besides, I personally think they are quite naff as 99.9% of them mean nothing to anyone apart from the owner.
The only time you'll get ones that might be humourous or striking is if you pay tens of thousands of pounds for them - which indicates to me that the purchaser has more money than sense.

Note to self:

Purchase of 'ME 1' is no longer an option...stick with current plate.

It's so that you can't pass off an older car as being newer than it actually is. Which has got to be a good thing. You'd be pretty pee'd off if you bought a car believing it was a 'W' reg when infact it was really a 'P' reg.

I agree willman, you are warned before you buy.

Some years ago we had a Ford Escort estate, which was a 'P' reg, but looking at the documents, it was a re-registered vehicle, and was actually an 'H' reg.

At the time, I thought it was odd, because I thought all re-registers and Kit-built cars got a 'Q' registration mark?

It may have been exported and re-imported PT (although perhaps only on paper).

I imported a car in late 95/ early 96, drove it for a year on the foreign plates until the paperwork was done and when it was registered, I was given the latest plate at the time (R), even though it was older.

thanks for that, alc, I seem to remember (If I have it's history correct!) it was an ex-forces car, and had been in germany for a while, and re-imported, as you say.
