evildrneil 01-06-2004, 18:02 The US would be my idea of hell as a place to live! If I HAD to emmigrate to another country it would probably be one of the scandinavian countries (and no not JUST for the willowy blondes :P )
However all round I think I would probably prefer to stay in the UK :)
mu ideal place would be the canairy islands, the laid back way of life and all year warm climate really appeal 2 me.id probably have 2 nip back 2 britain 4 xmas tho id miss that
Hardly emmigrating but mine would be a Scottish Island.

I'm with you - UK is great (the indigenous people are a soft touch my friend :) )
Scandinavia (where I come from) is nice, but dull.
Norway has more money than it knows what to do with, so thats a good choice if you don't mind 30 inches of rain a month, every month.
For climate and general well being - all things being sorted out war-wise, I would probably choose the ethiopian highlands, although I have never been there.
Failing that West Africa, gambia or ghana - somewhere coastal.
Given the current political climate, The hebrides would be my choice. Failing that Canada.
I'd go to Australia given the chance, and I'd visit the US but I wouldn't like to become a US citizen given my feelings towards George W Bush over the way he and Tony Blair have handled the Iraq issue.

oh the greenland option - you mean after a global thermonuclear conflict?
Rusted Root 01-06-2004, 22:27 I would love to live in Oklahoma! The only Oklahomian I know says its a pretty crap state though. Still I'm sure I'd like it better than the UK!!

Does anyone know what this means and where are the canairy islands?
magicgem 01-06-2004, 23:48 Hawaii-I have no idea why Ive never been but Ive always fancied one of those hula skirts and spending my life drinking fancy cocktails in the sun.......heaven!
Also they speak english which, helps as im rubbish at languages
The US is not so bad (other than the current administration and foreign policy). In fact, where I live is particulary beautiful and relaxed. However, I used to live in LA and that place is awful. Traffic beyond belief, dirty....expensive...not good. SO glad I moved.
There's lots to the US - it's so vastly different from one place to another. I'm sure that everyone could find somewhere that they would like.
Having said that, I never really had any plans to leave Sheffield. It just kind of 'happened'.
I liked Holland a lot - friendliest peolple I've ever met AND with the added bonus of an abundance of hotties. ;)
France is beautiful as is Germany.
Travel is good - it opens your eyes and makes you realize that people are pretty much the same the world over. I am done being Ghandi now...but go and travel anyway!

Hardly emmigrating but mine would be a Scottish Island. I'm going to Arran in July Mo, maybe we can elope and set up a rival forum, the Arran Forum, no Sheffields allowed.;)
DaBouncer 02-06-2004, 07:28 Well I know my better half wants to be close to mummy, so I'll not be going anywhere.
However should I find my self in singleville again (and kiddie free), I'd probably emigrate to the USofA.
I've worked their for 6 months previous so I have a feel for the place. In fact I loved it. The standard of life I feel is better and like headup says, it vary's greatly from one place to the next.
You could be in Beautiful New England one day with all the forrests and lakes. Then the next you could be in the desert heading towards the gambling capital of the world LV.
Following that you could drop by the beaches of Florida for some year round sun!
It's all there. Just cos JWB runs the place, doesn't make the people less friendly.

Bring back some Arran whiskey. It's lovely:)
Personally If I had the option I wouldn't even like a fixed address. I'd just hop about like the guy on The Beach.
The Netherlands would be my place of choice. Well sorted out country. America would be good for a while, wouldn't fancy getting old there. I'd certainly miss the NHS. And when I lived there, I couldn't stop worrying about
1.lunatics with guns
2. Bears
3. Snakes
4. Country and Western
Or possibly Western Ireland....
For the Hebridean fans, a mate of mine has just moved there. Lovely place, but be prepared for everyone to know your business!
I emigrated from Sheffield to Queensland, Australia 23 years ago and it was the best move I ever made. I love coming "back home" catching up with friends and family and visiting all the places I never saw when I lived there. There are a few things I miss about the UK especially the pub social scene. But - all in all, the quality of life over here is superb. I have travelled all over this wonderful country and would not choose to live anywhere else on earth.

I spent a while in Tenesee where there are bears and lunatics with guns, fair amount of country & western too - didn't see any snakes though.
I'd move out there in an instant - a log cabin in the Smokey Mountains or a big old house in Memphis.
I'd miss Sheffield though.
Of course, the cure to the wildlife fears would be New York City, though there would still be plenty of lunatics with guns. Still not sure if I could hack more than a year of two. My mate over there says they get proper weather, but he still hankered after one of the steel grey winter days.
evildrneil 02-06-2004, 11:32 I've had a few friends move out to the US to work and come running back to the UK after a few months complaining that the states are pathologically normal and PC! I guess they havent had enough time to build up the correct depth of depravity and eccentricity!
Having said that I have to admit New Orleans kinda appeals!
Make the Peak District a sovereign state, and send me there.

Its all there but its also all here. The vast size of USA means you still have to travel far if you want to sample it all. No different to getting on a plane from Manchester and flying to South of France. At least in Sheffield you can go from sprawling city to beautiful countryside in 5 minutes. This country has taken on so many Americanisms anyway that the two are hardly dissimilar. I've been a few times and the standard of living is no better than it is over here. Personally I love blighty (despite its faults) and always miss it when I go away..theres something to be said for the pub culture in this country..you can never quite get the same feeling in other countries as you do here on a sunny Sunday afternoon sat in a pub watching some footy on telly.
MissEllie 02-06-2004, 15:58 And how would you see all these places in the U.S. given 10 days vacation a year, which is what most people get?
;)

I must disagree with you there. I think the standard of life is far superior. And yes it is big and talking a plane is required if you wanna get to the places the same day. However, you can drive. It's all one land, so take a road trip to anywhere in the states.
It may be just me but I love it there.
And not being the biggest footy lover and more of a Rugby / American footy / Baseball / Basketball fan I'd be more at home in yankee land!

You have your own business that exists in cyber space, meaning all you need is a cyber cafe to earn £££ (or should that be $$$).
MissEllie 02-06-2004, 16:20 Aaaaah, now I see.
You'd be one of those mega-rich British people who "emigrate" :D here and actually have a life.
Good luck with it:thumbsup:
My personal experience of living over here is a better standard of living. The weather and food are certainly better *in general*.
As for the US being too big to see anything of the country, I can take a nice drive out to the mountains and see some spectacular stuff - all within an hour's drive of where I live. It's no Castleton - but it'll do!
However, Sheffield will always be home. My family and friends are there and as soon as I'm on the phone I revert to 'dee-daa' speak. ;)
Also.....I'm not "mega-rich" either. :P :D
I know for a fact if I emigrated anywhere I would be dreadfully homesick. Yet,I've always had the urge to travel,so I would like to spend a couple of years in each of the following...
1 The Netherlands
2 New Zealand
3 Canada
4 The Hebrides
The reason is that I believe the people are friendly and the scenery in the last 2 is magnificent
I lived in the US for just over a year, the best thing about USA was coming home!!!!!!!!!!
However, I am in the (very slow) process of emigrating to Canada. I have family there, somewhere to live and I've already spent a lot of time there. Canada is a great country, it's like they took all the good ideas from UK and USA, dumped all the crap and made a really great place to live! Also, not as over-populated as UK, less traffic problems etc.

I agree - we spent new year in New York with an old mate and it's all me , me, me!!!!!!!! How people change!! No way would I live there after that!!!:)
