View Full Version : Where's the cheapest petrol in Sheffield?
The idea of this thread is to maintain a list of the cheapest places to buy petrol in and around Sheffield. Please reply to this post stating the name of the garage, the road it's on and the price per litre. At the end of every day I will update a master list in this first post. If you notice the price change then please be sure to post an update so the list remains accurate.
List last update 9.17am - June 3
(All prices are for a litre of standard unleaded petrol)
MORRISONS (PENISTONE ROAD) - 80.9
JET GARAGE (JUNC A61/A629) - 81.9
TESCOS (MILLHOUSES) - 81.9
ESSO (PRINCE OF WALES ROAD & PARK SQUARE) - 81.9

TEXACO (BIRLEY MOOR ROAD) - 83.9

JET (OWLER LANE) - 80.9
TOTAL (CARLISLE STREET) - 80.9

BP (SAVILLE STREET) - 85.9
(Also: Possibly 5p off a litre if you spend £50+ at Tescos)

Thanks to all of you who have posted prices so far (I've removed them to make way for updates and new pump details). If you discover any of the prices above are incorrect (i.e. have changed since first posted) then please reply with the new details.
Keep posting replies with the prices (and locations) of your local pumps... This will only work if everyone chips in and helps each other by keeping the list accurate and as large as possible.
Price listed updated - thanks for all the replies and updates over the last 24 hours (I've removed them from below in order to keep things clear). Please continue to reply to this thread with any new price details - be sure to check the list above and let us know if any have changed.
Remember - this thread is only for pump prices and *not* general chat/enquiries about petrol etc.
micksheff 03-06-2004, 13:16 (Also: Possibly 5p off a litre if you spend £50+ at Tescos)
Also Morrisons do a discout card saving 1.5p per litre
http://www.morereasons.co.uk/miles.cfm
kittykat 03-06-2004, 23:44 sainsburys have 4p off if you spend so much on food i believe you just keep the receipt and it says how much youve got off on that
Safeway I think are still doing a reasonable money off scheme. BP gargage - Manchester Road Crosspool is 81.9p/l
Classic Rock 04-06-2004, 09:24 Shell, next to the CRB is 81.9
when prices get to over a pound per liter what will the petrol stations do as the price wont fit on any of their big display boards any more?!?
Do £10 shoping from safeway and they give me 2P off on petrol and it will increase on every £10
Thats the lowest price i think lol
qazitory 04-06-2004, 21:11 TOTAL (CARLISLE STREET) - is still 80.9
royjames 09-06-2004, 21:08 Morissons at hillsbrough is still 80.9
Asda is dropping the price to 79.9p a litre according to Ananova:
Asda reducing price of fuel (http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_983555.html?menu=)
yorkiepudd 10-06-2004, 19:34 Most Morrisons now down to 79.9 (Ecclesfield / Catcliffe / halfway). Local Essos still unchanged @81.9
Any chance of this thread being put back at the top of the page please!!!?
Sainsbury's, Meadowhall - 79.7
Dont know who is offering the cheapest but I know Morrisons at Eccelsfield is 79.9 at the moment
qazitory 24-07-2004, 15:28 Is Geoff still running this??
yorkiepudd 25-07-2004, 10:47 For those who are interested, apparantly Esso have finished their "pricewatch" campaign that guaranteed them to be amongst the cheapest (quietly, of course, so no one notices).
This is the reason that they are at 82.5p when everyone else is around 79.9 / 80.9 so all Esso stations are now best avoided.
Well Esso at Nether Green is 79.9 still.
royjames 25-07-2004, 15:43 morrissons at hillbrough is 79.9
yorkiepudd 25-07-2004, 17:05 Apparently they have chosen a large percentage of sites that they think they can get away with charging higher prices (ie ripping customers off) like the ones on main routes (ie. city centre and on the Parkway) and they charge top dollar at those sites.
The total garages offer a reward scheme, whenever ya fill up you get points which can then be turned into marks & spencers vouchers! and their petrol isa always on the cheeper end of the scale
Better hurry for the Morrison/Safeway discount deals as I hear the scheme is ending on July 31 - at the Cemetery Rd filling station anyway.
royjames 25-07-2004, 20:58 What I can't understand is I was under the impression that oil prices had come down so can someone tell me why petrol has gone up.
because the government takes a hefty share of the money ie duty! swines
Going on a long journey this weekend, just wondered if anyone has seen any cheap ish petrol? Waitrose isnt normally bad, but yesterday it was 84.9 and this morning its 85.9! Although not as bad as on motorway at 89!!!
Also ive got a morrisons petrol card scheme thing, never really use it much, does anyone know what its worth. Is it like nectars equivalent?
Thanks all!
firsteuro 29-06-2005, 11:46 the money spent driving round looking for cheap petrol will negate any savings.
Skatiechik 29-06-2005, 11:47 82.9 in huddersfield
Ginger_Kitty 29-06-2005, 11:52 82.9 at petrol station on Meadowbank Road, a mile up the road frm Meadowhell, at least it was that price on saturday!!!!
Classic Rock 29-06-2005, 13:02 Isn't there a website somewhere that lists all the petrol prices locally?
dave1814 29-06-2005, 13:20 Yeh the AA used to do Petrol Busters but it was closed down due to lack of funding :-(
Classic Rock 29-06-2005, 13:21 Hmmm, and the AA charge top whack for their breakdown service too.
Thanks all, but 'firsteuro' the idea was that i wouldnt be driving around for petrol seaching out the cheapest one, because the good old forumers would have had their eyes peeled on their journeys so i would know where to go directly!!
I live in nether edge by the way!
steevie/d 29-06-2005, 13:46 not sure about cheap petol but the morrisons card puts so many points on yuor card when you fill up and when the card is full you get £5 to spend in store or at garage
Berberis 29-06-2005, 13:48 The pertol station at waitrose is pretty cheap!
Yeh we normally get it at waitrose for about 83p sih, but now nearly 86! Have petrol prices just risen everywhere!!
KookyKoo 29-06-2005, 16:12 I am really fed up with petrol prices constantly rising, I saw it on sale t'other day at 92.9p (and that was unleaded!!!)
OH MY GOD! 92.9!!!! WHERE WAS THAT!!!! JESUS!
Not the petrol stations fault...

I'm wary about supermarket petrol. I have a relative who works in the petrochemical industry. He told me that supermarket fuel has less of the lubricants and detergents which proprietory brands have. Essentially, at the refinery, Shell, Esso, Conoco or whoever, sell the basic fuel to supermarkets and independant distributers whilst adding the quality ingredients to their own brands. The quality fuel is much better for the engine in the long term as it keeps down carbon deposits in injectors and lubricates. I feel that this is worth the 1p per litre which is often the price difference.
Has anyone noticed that the BP station at the top of Herries Road charge a different price for different times of the day? At peak times, it is 89.9p and at other times around 84-85.9p. Why is this

I don't.
I usually fill up @ Morrisons. Though I have tried Shell Optimax a couple of times and found I have problems starting in damp conditions (not with Morrisons petrol though)!

If they do this it will be as they know they will still busy at peak times even with the higher prices. Probably wouldn't sell much off peak with really high prices. I walk past there regularly to get the bus and have never noticed the different prices, they do seem to run out of petrol quite often though. Loads of times it has been closed.

It was on the M1 somewhere, I don't remember exactly which services but I decided not to stop for petrol then!
kall_sheff 23-07-2005, 13:17 what's driving the fuel prices . It stands at 90P/litre at BP price of wales road. I nearly had an open heart surgery paying for it
Internetowl 23-07-2005, 15:28 Jet on Owler Lane are selling it currently at 86.7p
Other Jet stations (http://wh.conocophillips.com/uk/contacts/jetstationsearch.asp?sortby=South+Yorkshire&Smile_LPG=Any)
I payed 86.something a Sainsbury's meadowhall on Thursday.
SlimboyFat 23-07-2005, 18:28 Whilst peeps are checking the prices, if they could email petrol@ckery.co.uk (or PM) them to me I will stick them on the site ( www.ckery.co.uk (link in sig))
Whether its an update to one of the stations listed or one to add to the site, they are all appreciated.
Thanks
ps. Could really do with both Unleaded and Diesel (LPG if available)
fruit&nut 23-07-2005, 18:31 what about diesel prices?im paying 91.5pfrom jet at halfway,cost me £30 this week,
come on add them to ur list, please
lauramottram 03-11-2005, 12:26 please can we start this thread again?
as ive just gone diesel and have no idea how much is cheap...
BP leppings lane 98.9....?
I drove straight past BP leppings lane the other day, I was absolutely gobsmacked by the difference in price between their price and all the rest!!!
I usually try to fill up my motorbike close to home, before commuting to Sheffield, as the unleaded price here is 89.9, but the stations on my way in are charging 91.9 or 92.9. I know it's "only 2 or 3 pence per litre", but when you put 50 quid a week in, over the course of a few months, it soon adds up.
mrchinnery 03-11-2005, 19:31 unleaded 91.9 west street, eckington
What with the price of petrol falling i thought id pop this thread back up,where's the cheapest petrol in Shefield?
Just been to Barnsley and at their Tesco it stands at 85.9.
SlimboyFat 20-11-2005, 16:19 Rotherham Asda - U 85.9 D 90.9
but don't let the price drop fool you, in July this year you could get Unleaded at 80.9 and Diesel at 85.9.
Morrisons @ Hillsborough and Chestefield Rd, unleaded 87.9 Diesel 90.9
BP @ Bramhall La, Unleaded 89.9 Diesel 92.9
www.petrolprices.com show 85.9 for Tesco Chesterfield as the cheapest!!
Great Site, I would recommend you try it!!
Hmmm... well Morrisons at Catcliffe was 87.9 earlier today which I thought was pretty good.
86.9 at tesco's on my way to work...
I just got an email this morning about Petrol Prices http://www.petrolprices.com/search.html?search=S10+2GA
You have to sign up to be able to view all of them in the area, but it is free and it's very useful. Was updated yesterday too.

I've been signed up with one of their other sites (ourproperty.co.uk) and haven't had ANY spam at all. So I wouldn't worry about it...

Cavellsuk 03-01-2006, 13:03 I was just wondering if it would be an idea for people to post petrol prices in and around sheffield to help us all out.
They have. (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11869)
clublander 03-01-2006, 14:09 http://www.petrolwatch.net/
I made the site a while back, got bored and didn't really finish it, or advertise it. The basics do work though (its a trust system) Feel free to use it if you want.
Petrol prices are actually cheaper in Retford for a change rather than us getting skanked :( but only because the local paper tried to start a Morrisons boycott!
85.9 is the cheapest here.
Is Waitrose still doing petrol stupidly cheap?
Kristian 03-01-2006, 20:00 Mod: Threads merged. Thanks for the link.
Sainsbury's at Meadowhall is currently the cheapest I know, about 1p cheaper than the other supermarkets across town anyway, at 86.9. Waitrose, Tesco and Morrisons are 87.9p.
So ive noticed that the price of petrol has jumped back up quite a bit in the last fortnight, and seems to keep rising...
any chance we can get this thread going again to keep the good people updated on where the best prices can be found ??
i noticed that today the Shell garage down on Netherthorpe Road was 91.9 for Unleaded...
think Morissons at t'barracks was 93.9
Shell petrol stations also have realy good prices. Im quite sure that the prices are the same as morrisons if not cheaper..
I know of the one on Netherthorpe Road and the one at town end of Ecclesall Road
RozeePozee 15-04-2006, 09:57 This is a great thread - Thanks. But I'm a bit confused now as to which is the most up to date list. I have an empty tank and need to fill up b4 visiting the in laws 2moro. I'm in SW, nr Hunters Bar.
Cheers!
SlimboyFat 15-04-2006, 11:01 Remember, you can always use http://www.petrolprices.com to get the cheapest.
Chepest Diesel - Sheffield
Victoria Service Station 94.9p
Total Co-op Norfolk Park Service Station 95.9p
Shell Shell St Phillips 95.9p
Waitrose Waitrose Sheffield 95.9p
Shell Shell Sheffield 95.9p
Cheapest Unleaded - Sheffield
Victoria Service Station 91.9p
Shell Shell St Phillips 91.9p
Shell Shell Sheffield 91.9p
Jet Pearl Motors 91.9p
Total Tcs Carlisle Street 91.9p
does each morrisions has a different price?
RozeePozee 15-04-2006, 21:34 In my experience, yes it does. I made the mistake of passing by a cheap fill up in chesterfield assuming I'd get the same price at meadowhead - very wrong!
macaskill 15-04-2006, 22:20 Maybe we could just use the car a bit less, that's a sure way to save money on petrol
remember the total garage on carlisle st is closed.
Went to Grimsby passed Morrisons yesterday 91.9p how does catcliffe justify 93.9p
Went to Grimsby passed Morrisons yesterday 91.9p how does catcliffe justify 93.9p
Because like Sainsbugs at Meadowhall it's a last stop before the motorway and there's no nearby competition.
I went to the Total station at Gleadless Town End on Thursday, admittedly cos the car was sucking air and probably wouldn't have seen me to Morrisons at Meadowhead even though I was headed there, and they were charging 94.9. When I came home not an hour later, it had gone up to 95.9 :o
climaxchick 17-04-2006, 04:14 I've also noticed recently that Morrisons aren't always the cheapest. I think its a matter of hit and miss. The Petrol Station at the bottom of Station Road is usually the cheapest i see when compared to BP and Texaco on Birley and Morrisons at Halfway.
I filled up at texaco on city road a couple of weeks ago at 91.9, on my way home i passed the one on Birley moor road and it was 95.9! How can the same company justify having 4p a litre difference at stations less than 3 miles apart?
I use PetrolPrices, for finding Petrol and LPG. Remember it only uses data collected from a company that collects data from fuel cards :)
Murco/Tinsley Jet Station was on there for LPG one week but gone the next even though it was cheapest. I thought, has it gone up so i called them and it hadn't budged. PetrolPrices is still an excellent site though.
Also, certain types of unleaded 95 seem to make my car go funny, as i found when i filled up at Morrisons in Barnsley, Fine with the Jet stuff, Fine at Crown Garage (A61) and a bit dodgy on BP (Law Bros - Expensive)
Waitrose and Morrisons are at 92.9 at the moment
royjames 09-10-2006, 18:40 Looks like the price is going up again.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-13546065,00.html
Might not be for another few days.... I might just fill up now while it's still 84.9 at my local Morrisons.
Of course, me doing that will then push the prices down by a further 5p a litre within 48 hours - Sod's Law in action.
UnkleBob 10-10-2006, 16:30 84.9 morrisons at catcliffe. The one near St Philips social club in town is often a penny cheaper than on the dge of town like wot i'm on...
SteamSimon 10-10-2006, 22:50 Shell on eccy road
bean55788 11-10-2006, 01:05 83.9 at waitrose on london rd
Isn't it amazing, looking back at this thread, the prices we're paying today!
Taximark 29-12-2007, 00:24 Yes i know!! i paid £1.12 yesterday for diesel! god only knows why in the space of 7 months it has gone from 79.9 to around 110.9 (average)
I get my unleaded for 99.9 from Morrisons in Buxton. I try not to buy any petrol from BP or Esso.
Hi. Just found this thread on the search and it's a good idea. As I've just bought my first car and am about to fill it up for the first time, I wondered if anyone had a recent update on current petrol prices around sheff?
1.30pm Sainsburys at Archer Road 91.9p
I always find Waitrose is a couple of pence cheaper than most places as is the Shell garage on Eccy Road!
Enjoy the new car!!!
waitrose is cheaper? see i wouldn't have guessed that! thanks!

MonkeyLover 15-04-2009, 20:07 waitrose is cheaper? see i wouldn't have guessed that! thanks!
Yeh, I find Waitrose nearly always the cheapest. Pearl Garage on East Bank Road is pretty reasonable too - I filled up today, 109.9p
Tiberius 20-07-2009, 10:37 In the Last week, ive been to Plymouth, Portsmouth, North Wales, Wakefield and Leicester. The majority of petrol stations were selling petrol and diesel for 99.9p per litre or less. Some of these being on main routes and at shell and esso stations.
Why does sheffield get such a bum deal at over 101.9 ? Can see there being any geographical disadvantage?

The one in bold is a major surprise to me.
Had to fill up yesterday, and I would never give that one a second thought, as it is usually the most expensive!
FYCannibal 20-07-2009, 13:55 You'v got to use the petrol stations that are near to you or that you pass on your journy's because going out of your way to find cheap petrol is pointless for obvious reasons.
Ginger Daddy 20-07-2009, 13:57 You'v got to use the petrol stations that are near to you or that you pass on your journy's because going out of your way to find cheap petrol is pointless for obvious reasons.
My usual one is the Shell one on Netherthorpe Road, so the cheapest was only round the corner and would have been no further out of my way.
Slightly annoyed now
I didn't even know the Coop had petrol stations! Didn't someone post that Morrisons have dropped their petrol to 99.9p. Isn't the petrol station at the bottom of St Phillips a Jet station? Its usually a pretty good bet for cheaper petrol.
Ginger Daddy 20-07-2009, 14:02 I didn't even know the Coop had petrol stations!
Maybe the petrol station isnt run by them, but the shop is.
Didn't someone post that Morrisons have dropped their petrol to 99.9p.
It would have been on that email I posted above
Isn't the petrol station at the bottom of St Phillips a Jet station? Its usually a pretty good bet for cheaper petrol.
No, its a Shell. There are no other petrol stations around that area.
I probs don't do enough miles really for this odd penny to make much of a difference. The Waitrose petrol station is another one that seems to be one with lower prices.
Does the loyalty cards ie the one at Morrisons do these have that much of a bearing on your petrol buying?

You get a £5 voucher once you have reached a certain number of litres, but think it equates to 1.5p per litre or something like that.
You get 1 point (1p) for every pound at a Tesco station (Clubcard)
Sainsburys have recently changed it so that 1 litre gets you 1 point. It used to be £1 got you 2 points, which was a much better deal. 500 points gets you £2.50 off your shopping, or it can be used to purchase other items elsewhere.
Aye but the question is do they have a bearing on where you'll buy your petrol, would you hold out to a further station if you were close to get i.e. 5 quid voucher from Morrisons?
Ginger Daddy 20-07-2009, 14:21 Aye but the question is do they have a bearing on where you'll buy your petrol, would you hold out to a further station if you were close to get i.e. 5 quid voucher from Morrisons?
For me, no.
Not used my Morrisons one in months, about halfway to a £5 voucher.
Depends where i am, where I am going (if im going to Wakefield, for example, its cheaper for me to fill up there most of the time), and where I am passing.
They reckon the prices are gonna start dropping pretty sharply soon?
iansheff 20-07-2009, 15:45 A week last Saturday I read that Asda had decided to drop their petrol to 99.9 and that Sainsbury and Morrison were following suit. I don't know about Sainsburys but Morrisons have dropped it to 99.9 at Stairfoot and Parkgate so I have been told but not at the other sites. I think we should boycott Morrisons petrol, I can't see why it is 2p a litre more in some of their stations than others.
lilly1234 20-07-2009, 16:50 we all get a bum deal in sheff i think we are the dearest around so they should giv e us a break we pay enough on rd tax and insurance so the petrol should go dwn.cos they dont do much on the rds cos there full of pot holes
Tiberius 21-07-2009, 08:15 Why in sheffield does diesel seem to be a penny or two dearer than petrol, when its the same price and less than a £1 in other parts of the country?
A bigger bum deal for diesel drivers!
BP / Law Bros on Halifax rd nr wednesday ground 104.9 for diesel yesterday.
In the Last week, ive been to Plymouth, Portsmouth, North Wales, Wakefield and Leicester. The majority of petrol stations were selling petrol and diesel for 99.9p per litre or less. Some of these being on main routes and at shell and esso stations.
Why does sheffield get such a bum deal at over 101.9 ? Can see there being any geographical disadvantage?
We went to Manchester at the weekend, and the petrol was 99.9 there too, as well as in Huddersfield. At one petrol station Diesel and petrol where the same price.

alchresearch 21-07-2009, 08:51 It's pretty much 99.9p for petrol and diesel everywhere round me now.
hitch_1980 21-07-2009, 11:24 If it does go down, it wont last, from what ive read there is going to be a bit of a problem with petrol in general next year.
SKYPECAST 05-08-2010, 20:21 i have found waitrose is the cheapest at 1.14, off of london rd.
espadrille 06-08-2010, 08:57 so in some cases about 20% more than it was last year.
No wonder it costs so much to go down the M5 this year:help:
