View Full Version : Don't they make scissors any more?
I have just had my first haircut in sunny Sussex today, and the barber was singing the praises of Japanese and German hairdressing scissors.
I explained that I was on missionary work from Sheffield, and asked why he didn't buy Sheffield scissors.
He said that his suppliers catalogue had absolutely no Sheffield scissors listed. He thought that Sheffield had stopped making them.
Can that be true?
Plain Talker 13-06-2006, 18:35  hi mister H, how's it going in Chichester?
we're missing you, up here!
mortons on west street certainly did do local scissors last time I was in, Sheffield still does make them, to my knowledge.

My Mom always said that Sheffield scissors wouldn't cut butter:o
Try doing a search on the internet for sheffield scissors.. I just did and found loads - here are a couple:

Sorry, I was being a bit obtuse!
The point i was trying to make was twofold:
If Sheffield doesn't make scissors any more, isn't it a great shame that another of Sheffield's industries has disappeared
If Sheffield still does make scissors, isn't it a shame that they aren't listed in suppliers catalogues, so hairdressers and barbers across the country (and the world) are buying German and Japanese make scissors.
I, personally, wasn't thinking of buying any for myself!
If Sheffield still produces scissors, dont be surprised if the steel used to make them is imported from Germany.
Don_Kiddick 14-06-2006, 05:44 I can't remember the manufacturer of the last scissors I bought, but they were a snip
rubydazzler 14-06-2006, 06:42 Mr H!! ... welcome home!
Totally agree with your point as well.
Isn't it weird how the local people seem to have always been the prime movers in the knocking of Sheffield, judging by poppins point ... unless she was from Rovrum of course :)

And a butter knife won't cut anything else.
squirrelz 14-06-2006, 07:33 I've got a pair of Richardson's laser scissors and they cut through just about anything. tin cans, fingers...
I have a friend and she is a hair stylist, she uses scissors from Japan that cost around £100 a pair, apparently they are the best for hair, really sharp and made using the same techniques in making a samurai sword.... And they pre-date Sheffield steel by about 500 years!

Why does she not get some new ones then?
Those must be ready for sharpening by now like.

I would be surprised. Sheffield makes more steel now than it ever used too, so it wouldn't be worth the producers spending money on importing tacky, junk.

This is a rather old thread, but Kutrite (http://www.kutrite-of-sheffield.co.uk/) is still going as far as I know - although with all the new developments round there I'm not sure for how long.
Alastair 28-05-2007, 09:49 A Wright and Son still make scissors. They have a tiny workshop near the train station.
