During my 12 hr Forum holiday I got to thinking about shortened names.

I can understand how David gets shortened to Dave, and even the link between William, Willy => to Billy.

But how does a Margerate become a Peggy and what Has Richard done to become known as Dick?

 Answers please

This used to happen a lot when I worked in a nursing home.I can remember there was one woman known as Sadie and her real name was something like Sarah! Dunno why people do it!

Yup that's right.

My name tends to get enlarged to Pauly by close friends.....or even 'Pauline' by those who think they're hilarious....Trotta! :P

Kathryn gets shortened to Kate alot, although my sister's name is actually Kate, not Kathryn. :)

I don't get why a "R" becomes an "L" when a terry or laurence, or derek becomes tel, lol, or del. (or hal from Harold??)

Shel, yeah, shortened from Michelle, or Caz from Caroline, Bri from Brian, and "Renie" from Irene.

My ex-hub even had his name shortened, to *I* (pronounced "ee") from Ian... his name was chosen by his father as a name that could not be shortened.. (*chuckles*)

People try and lengthen my name to Katherine or Kathleen (might as well call me simon or bob!) and tend to get a bit upset when I insist on my real name being used. I get patronising looks and 'no dear, we need the name it says on your birth certificate'

I've known people in the past that have specifically chosen their Children's names so they cant be abbreviated... :?

I on the other hand prefer names that can be abbreviated... i feel its more friendly...

I'd rather my closest friends shorten my name... rather than use my real name... like i mentioned before its more friendly... :D *soppy*

My Mum chose my name because it can't be shortened, but people have still managed over the years to call me by a strange selection of names. Most people assume my name is already abbreviated and call me a rather old fashioned lengthy version which REALLY aggravates me.
Our girls have got names which could be mucked about with, one has ended up with a pet name BooBoo and the other Two Shoes, poor things. Thankfully just we call them that.

I'm Joanne and for 18 years of my life I fought my parents to be Jo - they finally started calling me Jo then I decided I hated it and wanted to be called Joey. My dad still calls me Jo - JoWanne when I'm in trouble.

If I introduce myself as Joanne (in formal situations and such like) I automatically get shortened to Jo which does my nut in. If I introduce myself as Joey people presume I can't pronounce my own name and call me Jody.

My biggest bugbear is being called Jo with an e. Joe. Its a boys name for goodness sake!

My other big issue is folk that have normal(ish) names but spell 'em wierd...:suspect:

Peggy was a shortened version of Elizabeth in the 18th century. Margaret is a version of Margueritte. Luckily I’m a man. Had I been a woman I’d have hated being called ‘Marge’!

Went with a female friend’s daughter to see my friend in hospital. There was a difference of opinion as to her real first name with her insisting it was Margueritte and the hospital insisting it was Margaret. So, the ward sister asked my friend’s daughter, saying “what do you call her”. My friend’s daughter said, “I call her Mum”!

That reminds me of an old joke Pete:

A cowboy walks into a saloon, orders a drink & says to the bartender "You can call me Tex"

The bartender enquires "Are you from Texas?"

To which the stranger replies "Nope, I'm from Maryland - but I don't like being called Mary" :hihi:

My sister is Samantha, and cos I couldn't pronounce it when we were kids she was known as "Manty" or "Mants". This has, in later years, been corrupted somewhat, meaning that a 31 year old woman now answers (en famille, at least) to the name "Pants".

She does reciprocate with something equally unsophisticated for me

I still dont get why richard got called pilchard

an explanation that might be relevant:-

richard to pilchard...

Cliff Richard gets the mick taken out of him by being called "Riff Pilchard" (like Dusty Springfield was dubbed "Rusty Springboard", and Gene Pitney was "Gene Pitstop" or Celine Dion was "that talentless prat from canada... "sorry, I mean "Sea-lion Dion")

that might be the reason why. (well it's as plausible as any)

My mom chose our names so they couldn't be shortened.
Im Sarah but i do get called Sar's a lot, pronounced Sair's not sar's as in the disease lol
My brother is called Lee, and this man who worked at Pinegrove used to call him Leepy. When he gets on my nerves i just call him Leek. Our surname begins with K ya see.

My old best mate from school is called caroline, we all call her Cal now. I also call my other mate Catherine, Cat.

I have a lot of laughs with *Ryan*, i call him allsorts, which annoys the living daylights outta him :hihi:

Apparently Richard got abbreviated to Dick because "Dick is the Medieval short form of RICHARD. The change in the initial consonant is said to have been caused by the way the trilled Norman R was pronounced by the English."

No, I don't understand it either!
