View Full Version : Don Valley Railway - Restoration
A team of volunteers are in the process of setting up Don Valley Railway as a charity in order to restore the line and operate a service from Sheffield Victoria to Deepcar station via Hillsborough.
More information can be found at thier website

Could be a big tourist attraction using Steam trains as well as great for commuters.
Eh?! Since when was there a railway track at Hillsborough?
goes over wadsley bridge, they use it still for carrying football fans and escorting them to the SWFC grounds.
Had a look at the site, might be a good thing when it comes to fruition (the railway I mean, the site is already good for what it does) :)
There is a single line track that still exists all the way to Stocksbridge steelworks. It was used about once a week to transport steel between the Stocksbridge and Rotherham works.
Not sure if it is still in use though.
Internetowl 01-06-2004, 01:06 its still in use - runs past where I work - a few of the muppets on my floor at DSG watch them go by - sad really :)
He's a train spotter too - and is involved with this group - I think he does their website, bless.
jackthedog 01-06-2004, 09:17 The line is still in regular use - every day in fact.
A freight train trundles slowly past between around 12 and 1am every night. It took me ages to work out what the noise was.
I believe it runs between the steelworks at Stocksbridge and Tinsley.
It's been years since they've used it for football service - the station at Wadsley Bridge has been fenced off for about 2 years. Went up there about 4-5 years ago and the platform had collapsed completely, so I reckon it's been a fair few years since the football fans have used it!
It's a good job it's not used to regularly, we used to blast out of the woods at Oughtibridge Station on the bikes and launch over the track without a single check for trains!
It used to go out through Penistone and Dunford Bridge, then through the Woodhead Tunnel (I think - do any of SF's resident rail geeks wanna put me straight on this?)
I cant believe it's gonna finally be used - I had all sorts of plans for that railway line in the 'What Sheffield Needs' thread.
Damn!
rickmiles85 01-06-2004, 11:49 Im quite amazed by the photos on that site. Which shows a line behined the hotel, something I didnt think existed! I take it trains still go over the wicker arches?

Geek needed ? yes ?
the line was the Lincoln/Cleethorpes - Sheffield Vikkie - Manchester Vikkie line. electrified when like ages ago (1500V) closed early 80s.
jonathanp1 27-07-2004, 13:26 I used to work at DSG....and i aint no muppet, or train spotter! However, i did used to watch the trains go by....thats all that kept me sane in that palace. Who art thou who worketh at DSG? I might know ya?
Internetowl 28-07-2004, 08:12 But Jonathan dear, you are all these things....you know it, I know it and now the rest of this board nows it.....
10pm train approaching :)
jonathanp1 28-07-2004, 19:17 I do hope that you are not using the DSG nework for your own personal use. That would be very naughty of you, and i may have to call one of my many TM friends and get them to just have a little peak at your profile...........
Internetowl 28-07-2004, 21:53 Steve and Chris are aware - you have no friends at DSG - they've all left! There's only us BB boys left..
jonathanp1 29-07-2004, 15:56 I have theories:
1) Jay D - You diont sound like him, but still a possibility
2) Steven Lockwood - In which case go jump
3) I dunno!
Internetowl 30-07-2004, 00:07 Right on option 3....
Mod: Ladies, Gentlemen... can you use PM for this chat please? Thanks.
