A man is recovering in hospital after being shot in the stomach outside a city centre nightclub police say. The man, who is in his 20s, was hit at close range by one of four shots fired from inside a black VW Golf at Niche on Sidney Street at 0415 BST.

Police said the car, containing at least two Asian men, sped off towards Eyre Street after the attack.

Why doesn't this surprise me?! The Niche is a drugs paradise so it's no wonder people there is the odd bit of violence down there. Although, I do believe that the Niche was in news a few years ago when the manager was stabbed.

It wasn't the manager I think it was his brother who was stabbed. Not sure who was shot though not really spoken to anyone who was there yet. Whoever it was that shot him they are very sad people.

In 1998 the club's manager, Mike Baxendale, died after being knifed outside the premises. It was reported he was trying to control a violent confrontation which spilled out on to the street outside. Two bouncers were also stabbed.

More than enough reason for me to stay well away from the place, day or night :nono:

That's what I heard aswell. I don't think they were from sheffield though.

I remember when Mike was stabbed my friends went to his funeral. Steve his brother who now owns the club and a new lap dancing joint called Goodfellas is a nice chap too.

There should be a big sign outside Niche that lets people know what they "could" be letting themselves in for if they go in or hang around anywhere near the place. From everything I've heard about the place over the years, I personally wouldn't go near it if you paid me. Life is a hard enough thing to survive without knowingly or unknowingly putting yourself in the line of fire when some idiots who think they're from "the Hood" start with all this "gangster" crap.
This mindless violence may not always be drugs related, but I know that for the most part, if you hear of something like this happening in or around Niche, you assume that it is. They should try to clean the place up. At the moment it's like a poisonous mark infecting the backstreets of Sheffield and attracting all sorts of questionable characters. And what's worse, it's sucking in normal, healthy, mostly happy people, and destroying their lives too. :(

What you don't understand is if that club wasn't there they would spill out into other clubs. Henz the reason they all go there. If that place didn't exist there would be a lot more trouble in the rest of the Sheffield Clubs believe me.

Personally, I never had a bad experience there. I did see a lot of trouble when i first went nearly 4 years ago, but after the doormen started body searching everyone the trouble died down.

At the first sign of trouble though the doormen would be there in a second, so i felt pretty safe.

Even though Niche has got a bad reputation, I met some really cool people in there and made some great friends. And i would rather go there than ****head clubs like Kingdom

I wasn't suggesting they close the place down, just attempt to clean it up a bit, and warn people what the club is like before they go inside, just incase some people haven't heard it's reputation, and might go in thinking it's probably a lovely friendly safe place to be. Prevention is better than cure, and if they can warn people who really wouldn't knowingly put themselves into situations the likes of which Niche has attracted over the years, then the people who don't mind the risks, or even actually enjoy being in difficult or even dangerous situations can get on with it in peace.
I wouldn't personally frequent an establishment with a reputation that goes before it like Niche has, but if other people wish to go there and are happy with the associated risks, then that's fine. Like you said, J-Blaze - better them in there than in the other clubs and pubs.

Yes i agree that Niche can't be directly blamed for that, but maybe the problem is that clubs are too eager to "solve" the problem of violence in their clubs by just getting the bouncers to chuck random people out. If they were more willing to work WITH the police in potentially very violent situations, at the time of the shooting the idiots involved would have been down the police station having their fingerprints taken and their shoe laces taken off them for the night, not driving passed in a blacked out golf, letting off bullets into the queue.

Just heard from someone who was in town earlier tonight and they said there was a heavy police presence around the club, including armed officers and large riot vans. Wonder if something went off again tonight or if it was a preventative measure?

I passed by there too. I think it was just a heavy police presence but they also seemed to asking a lot of questions too. It looked as though they were trying to peice together the previous incident.

We've been going over to Niche on and off since early 1997, from where we live near Liverpool, because you can't beat those NICHE TUNES.....!!!!!

We've met some sound characters in there over the years, but, I'd also say that it is probably the shadiest venue that I've ever been to.....!!! It's dangerous going in, dangerous inside and dangerous coming out.....!!!

But isn't that what makes the place what it is....?!? If you stripped out the lawless feel to the place and got rid of that 'special' Niche atmosphere then we might as well jack it all in and go and buy season tickets for our local Ritzy club.

Certain cities tend to have different methods and cultures for dealing with things. Sheffield used to be well known for its knife culture. Nottingham and Manchester both have large gun cultures.

the limit opened again as primarily a house venue, unfortunately within one week of opening the owners realised they was onto a loser, the niche dj's started playing at niche fri/sat why ? the owner made money, and big money. limit will still be how it was a few weeks ago, but not all the dj's will be playing there


how the **** can it go back to how it was 30 years ago ? when A) its not downstairs on west street no more
B) the music played then no longer attracts a crowd
C) all those "loving people" of 30 years ago, no longer frequent such a club.

Same here! I used to go from 2001 to about 2004 and they were the best. Grew out of it tho, but still miss the old days! : (

Hopefully never. if it does re-open it needs proper management to sort its previous problems out once and for all

i dont think the re-open as it was, i dont think it can? So why dont all you niche heads arrange your own night, there are loads of free parties in the summer but none are speed garage based, so get urself some niche raves kicking off out in the sticks, no coppers no bouncers no one to moan at you!

Niche is not re-opening, see thread RIP NIche. Chris Bailey the former manager has posted advising that Niche has been closed for good.

Half the pple who go on about niche are still at the diaper stage anyway--- if they wanted to go to a real club then they SHOULD have been around when the PENTHOUSE, WAPENTAKE, NELSON, BARLEYCORN & LIMIT was in their hey day's. Then they would have had something to rave about.

I don't know why the Niche/speed garage/whatever else you want to call it "scene" (the idea of which makes me laugh) is like that but if some people on a particular "scene" are obsessed with their own status within it that attracts people who want to challenge them and raise their own status.

It's part of the scene but that's only because some people have brought a certain attitude into the scene and it's been copied by others. I think it's mainly due to speed garage largely originating in the club and pirate radio scenes in London which can be very competitive (and that's a euphemism) and cliquey but it didn't have to carry on like that. However, it has carried on like that so it's no surprise that the speed garage scene has a bad reputation that other genres of dance music don't have.

For a while the idea of having dance tracks that were constructed around bass lines was appealing but after a while it seems the general public seemed to ask itself "Is that it?" and concluded that it was and went off in search of something else. Sadly, a few years later a really tedious form of trance became the next fashionable one-trick pony.

Don't get me wrong. I don't dislike speed garage but I only like it in small amounts as part of a varied diet of dance music which I consume regardless of what anyone else anywhere says is new, fashionable, massive or underground. Anyone who pays attention to people who go on about how new, fashionable, massive or underground something is needs to learn how to be sceptical.

I blame society for the downfall of any part of speed garage the genre.

This tune takes me back. Got a lot of good memories from niche when i used to go. Can't believe i started going 6yrs ago, the time flies :(

Thanks.no it isn't. its not a statement of fact, merely an opinionI was trying to find the figures, but in either the gold or silver MAW 10yr box sets, it mentioned the number of tracks they had put their name to. I'm sure it runs into the thousands.

well it seem i've ruffled a few feathers with the MAW is overrated assertion. i'll set the record straight. i don't think MAW are terrible. just overrated, there output is huge but much of their stuff sounds the same. their reputation carries them and people seem blind and deaf to the fact that much of their stuff is awful.

admittadly some of their stuff is genius, i doubt anybody dislikes 'to be in love' i don't i play it out regularly, i also play 'work' occasionally and i was late at arriving at the decision that backfired is quality so if anybody has a copy of it spare i'd love to buy it. also as somebody said their remix of see line woman was a thing of beauty.

but

that does not make them perfect or infallible. they have made some truly awful records. i can't think of a single house producer who hasn't.

for the record i adore house and i've been playing it for years and clubbing even longer. this weekend i'll be in plug shaking my ass to whatever graeme parks spinning. come find me, have a beer, call me a **** because i don't like MAW if you like!

the speed garage version (if you ever use the term "niche tune" again i'll hunt you down tie you to a chair and beat you with an old cj bolland record!) started life because stu-e (reflective and deep flight) used the accapella in his sets
