Can anyone give me a few pointers with regard to transplanting some privet hedging please? The privet I'm talking about is between 3'-4' although I did half its height a couple of years ago (or does height not make much difference0?

Also, what about the roots, how deep do they grow etc?

Don't bother with transplanting it,it's more trouble than its worth. It's far easier to just rip off as many cuttings as you need and dip them into some rooting powder and you will find they grow like mad.

Cheers for that,

I've been out digging a trench today and I'm absolutely shattered now. Sounds a much better option really doesn't it?

I transplanted a few 2-3' privets earlier in the year. They didn't take as much diggin up as I thought they would. So far, though, they're not growing as well as the ones I didn't move. Time will tell if it was a good idea.

I may take some cuttings if they don't survive. You need to take cuttings in the autumn when they have stopped growing. I have heard it takes quite a while for them to get established though.
