View Full Version : The Meaning of Dreams?
I asked this question on another thread and didn't really get much response.
For anyone who can explain dreams - I have on many occasions had a dream that im travelling really fast in a train, so fast that i begin to float in the air! suddenly the train comes to an abrupt end and i fall to the floor, when i exit i find im at an old, deserted train station in the desert.
This is how it ends every time!! Whats it mean?
*Dons my amazing technicolor Dreamcoat*
Your dream means that you are on a road to nowhere my friend, you are probably bored of some aspect of your life, and seek some excitement or something good to happen...
MWAHA! Eat your heart out Joseph! And Donny Osmond for that matter!
They mean nothing. They are just abstract thoughts. Although last night, I dreamed I was in Emmerdale :(
Susie
This is kind of what i wasn't hoping it would mean! I have thought about all the possible aspects but what i really need to do is buy one of those books that tell you what every object in a dream symbolises.
Anyway, thank you Rich for at least some kind of explanation.
I close my eyes . . . draw back the curtains . . la la la. .
Sam Miguel 31-05-2004, 14:07 You're lucky.
I have heard that the last thing you think about at night will evoke what you dream about. I always think about Kylie but have had no luck as yet. I'll have to think 'harder'.
I once dreamed that I was fast asleep in my own bed, and when I woke up I realised that it must have been true!

Those ' ' around harder make that image all the more... disturbing :P
Susie, who doesn't want to know what ANYONE thinks about in bed!
Mosherchik 31-05-2004, 14:55 Dreams dont predict the future, how could your brain possibly know whats going to happen to you??
Dreams are just a collection of things youve absorbed, seen overheard or read, and your brain just plays em back to you altho it sometimes jumbles it all up
I for one had a dream that Britney Spears was flipping burgers in Oxfam (go figure :loopy: ) she wouldnt sell me one so I hit her repeatedly with a baguette
I cant see that dream coming true - fun if it did
I think it was because Id been in Oxfam looking at scary 70s hand me downs and Britney was on the front of the Metro, as for the burgers and the baguette... who knows but thats dreams for ya :D
If I remember Freud correctly (and I probably don't!):
- All dreams are to do with the subconscious: your mind trying to sort out things that are worrying you at the time
- All dreams relate to something that happened to you or you were thinking about within the last 48 hours
- Many dreams contain symbolism rather than dreaming about the "real thing"
- Many dreams are wishful thinking (what you would like to happen in the future, rather than a prediction of the future)
- Trains are a symbol of sex (or maybe everything is a symbol of sex in Freud's mind!)
So, you are rushing ever so fast at sex and when you get there its a bit of a disappointment?
On the other hand, I may have mis-remembered Freud!
Sam Miguel 31-05-2004, 15:17 I always that a good release point is to make sure I never dream . If I feel a dream coming on, I stop it. The only dream I will allow to materialise is the one where I dream that I am not dreaming.
It's sometimes a nightmare trying to be so self-disiplined.
I once had a VERY strange dream:
I'd borrowed me Mum's car to go for a drive, had driven all the way across to Grimsby of all places, but the wierd thing was, I was sat in the passenger seat in the front, and leaning over to the steering wheel and gears etc to drive... Next thing I was driving round in Grimsby, drove right into the Town Centre, pulled up in this car park for a minute, and a copper comes up, taps on the window and says "excuse me sir, how long have you been driving this car?" cheekily I said "ooh about an hour and half", so the copper says "well I've been watching you and you don't seem to be driving on the right side", and proceeds to take my details...
At this point I was getting a bit worried and slumped into the passenger seat, "right" he says, "swap round to the driver seat and follow me, we're going to take a trip to the station"..
Next thing I woke up... I've been trying ever since to pick the dream up where I left off to see what happens, see if I get done for it, but to no avail :loopy:
Wierd dream eh? The main significances in it are my desire to learn to drive, my liking of the Town of Grimsby due to being at College there in the mid 90s... And probably the most daft of all, is that I'm used to sitting in the front passenger seat when I'm in Mum's car, so I conciously would stay in that seat even though I was driving!
Mosherchik 01-06-2004, 10:40 You can also develop a skill known as lucid dreaming where you can actually control the outcome of your dreams... really good if your having a bad nightmare, takes practise but I havnt had a nightmare in ages now

I take it you weren't dreaming about me after last night then? ;)

Dreams usually symbolize something in our lives! Is there anything in your life, at the moment, that never seems to change, or always happens the exact same, everytime?
Try looking up Carl Jung for dream meanings.
Archetypes:
Archetypes are often associated with Jung. He believed that there were several universal images that occurred in every culture throughout time and have the same universal meaning. Some Jungian archetypes include:
Persona - the image we present to the world; it is your public mask
Shadow - rejected aspects of yourself, symbol for weakness, fear, or anger.
Anima - feminine aspects that are repressed in the male psyche
Animus - masculine aspects that are repressed in the female psyche
Divine Child - your true self, your sense of vulnerability or potential
Wise Old Man - represent the self or some powerful figure.
Great Mother - symbol for growth, nurturance, fertility, seduction, or dominance.
I'd agree with Bonny - go Jungian!
Freud's great if you're a neurotic Viennese gentlewoman with too much time on her hands.
But to get digging around in the id and ego, Jung's the man!

I don't have any expert knowledge of interpreting dreams, but am very interested in it. I dream quite often about going on train journeys myself, but I never seem to reach my planned destination! I've heard that train journeys relate to the Journey of Life, but I don't really know.
Rich's explanation in his first posting sounded very interesting and plausible to me.

PS Personally, I think Jung's the man to go with if you want to investigate your dream further.
Well last night I dreamt I was dating Barbera Windsor.
The night before, someone wanted to spoon my eyes out of their sockets.
Someone help me!!
:gag: :help: :gag:
Maybe spooning your eyes out was trying to tell you something about your taste in women!? :hihi: :heyhey:
