Hi

Whenever I try and open any desktop icons they don't open the program and I am receiving an error message...

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in

I have checked for viruses and spyware and all is ok so I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and managed to fix this? I have also reinstalled IE but no better.

Any advice would be appreciated!!
Thanks

Hello,

Are you running or have Morpheus installed? (P2P prog)
From doing a bit of reading up on the error looks like my might have to reinstall windows.
What spyware scanners did you use?

Hi

No I am not running morpheus and I used Lavasoft adaware stuff. Also running NAV. Quite strange really because I have never had this problem before! The wonders of modern technology eh!

Thanks
Nic

There are some suggestions on this thread here that may help :

try removing anything you installed recently then do a sysytem restore to a previous date when the computer worked last,

could well be a memory fault...
if you have more than 1 stick of ram in it, take one out and see if it still does it, if it does try it with the other one in....
:)

I'd be inclinded to agree with you there neeeeeeeeeek. I you look at how many times the same location numbers occur in the register it would seem to be a strong possibility.

Hi everyone

Thanks for all your responses. I decided to just reinstall windows so I am now running XP and all seems to be fine.

Thanks again.

All you needed was ie - turning back - in add /remove programs and then upgrading. Reinstalling the entire os is a bit ott

Not always. Some programs can really foul up your system that it never feels the same even if you've managed to cure the initial problem.

Your best bet is (if you have a big enough drive):

1) Split into partitions.
2) Install Windows
3) Install all ncessary Windows updates
4) Install your programs
5) Get a copy of Norton Ghost and image the OS to another partition or to CD or DVD

Then if anything goes wrong, just run Norton Ghost and within 20 minutes your system will be as good as new. Keeping your data (not programs) on the other drive partition means that you won't lose your data when you re-install.

Mr Research - that too seems a bit heavy going for what is a quite common fault. Most 'home' users would get into a real tizzy with your solution although I know what you mean about it never seeming the same afterwards.

Mine was a quick, easy to complete solution which will work in 99% of cases.

Maybe, but IE wasn't pinpointed as being at fault.

The initial problem was with Explorer - Windows Explorer, not Internet. Although the former does use routines from the latter.
