Does anyone els dog do this, and is it only dogs that do this too has i have never seen cat do it.

I am on about when a dog pretend's on the carpet or on a hard flooring in a corner and burry food or treats, they will move paws in like a moveing motion like they moveing the soil away, then place object in the corner of the room then brush its nose like its brushing the soil back, then they realize it not buried it then take it out and do it again. Or is it just the heat that is sending my dog to do this.

I suppose the burying is instinct, as to doing it where it won't work, maybe some dogs are just a little bit dim.

Takara does exactly the same thing!

It's generally when she's worried that if she leaves it in view, it will get taken away.

She was even worse when it came to raw bones, if she couldn't hide it in the corner of the room she'd try and stuff it down the corner of the chair (urgh!) or sometimes hide it behind the sink!

It's just their instinct. It's the same reason many dogs turn round and round in circles before laying down, or nose the ground as you described before laying down. To flatten the grass that they would be laying in in the wild.

It does get annoying though when they keep trying to dig up the carpet!

my parents dog herds us when he's in a hurry, so whenever he's going for a walk or having his dinner put down. Quite amusing to watch once you've realised what he's up to.

My dog does exactly the same, pretends to bury things when there is nothing to bury it with!

cats do it too- and in cats it's been suggested the burying instinct is a throwback to the wild- burying the uneaten food to protect it from other scavengers and so it can be returned to later.

Our Wegie Ashia does it- at first, we thought she wanted to use the litter tray as you usually associate scratching with covering up cat muck in the litter tray- but she does it whenever she eats, scratching at the side of her food bowl and eventually wanders off with her meal half eaten- obviously thinks shes succeeded in covering it up (but then Alfie comes along and finishes it off).

one of our cats does it too, doesn't finishe her dinner, wanders off, remembers she ought to bury it.... again generally when its already been eaten by the other one!!

Shea hides stuff under and behind curtains, pulls washing out of the bathroom and downstairs to hide stuff... even her food bowl has been found under the tea towel!!.

Now she has started to dig the back 'garden' up.... if we could get her to do the whole garden that would be great and very helpful ... as OH is not keen on gradening and keeps whispering bouncy tarmac at me when I suggest we 'do' something with it!!! ;)

The dobermutt doesnt dig in our garden (no grass!) but she dug some almighty trenches in the other half's mum's garden when we spent a couple of days there doing a suprise kitchen makeover whilst she was away. Had to hide the holes in the lawn with old lino from the kitchen til I had chance to patch them back up again, ahem. Only other place she ever digs is on a beach.

She burrows in the bed though, which is infuritating when I've gone to great pains to keep her out of it- tucking the dust sheet in really tight, putting the pillows in a protective bag putting an extra dust sheet over the top and telling her to stay 'on the sheet'. Does she take a blind bit of notice? Does she ellaslike. Stubborn guarding breed, always taking liberties given half a chance... I don't mind her kipping on the bed, I'm not precious about my home, but would rather not lie where shes been licking her bum, thankyou very much.

She used to carry her food bowl around the house (an unsubtle hint to get me to feed her) but then we got a raised feeding station and she cant tip the bowls out of that now- she always brings empty cream cartons, butter containers or pop bottles in to slurp out the miniscule bits weve left in em for her. A good little eco-friendly cleaner up, even if she does make more mess destroying the containers...

Now, if only I could train her to put washing in the machine and do the ironing...
