Highlight of my year then they were too, in fact they were right up to me being about 17:hihi: Only remember finishing up in Carbrook after the Whit Walks though. Can't remember what it was called ,but lots of green park area where the rec used to be. Oh give over....wonder where the "boy friends" are now....... tosh13 08-06-2006, 17:13 I remember the one's at Meersbrooke park,we would march down from the Heeley church up to Heeley Bottom & I think the pub on the corner was the white lion,if you know different correct me as it was over 40 yrs ago. artisan 08-06-2006, 20:24 That was the Red Lion, with the field at the back where the kids were allowed in. (be called a 'beer garden' these days). The White lion is nearer to the railway bridge  Keanaz 09-06-2006, 08:06 I used to be in the cubs & scouts in Darnall on Mandeville st, we used to lead the parades through Darnall and then into HH Park - I used to play the side drum and bugle (not very well) but they were great fun, with all the church goers behind and then that led onto the Darnall Medical Aid parade with the decorated lorries all following, they had hell of a job getting down the hill from the start point and then eventually into the park - they screwed up in the park when they put all those concrete barriers up; Great times ozgirl 10-06-2006, 00:34 i remember going on the whitsuntide march from Mount Tabor church on the Parson Cross and going all round the streets can't remember where we finished but I was a train bearer for the sunday school queen (ah happy days) gosling 11-06-2006, 01:07 I remember the whitsuntide march, we would finish at the Carbrook Rec. In the afternoon we would go back to the chapel in Bodmin St. for tea. PETE 13-06-2006, 00:58 your'e dreaming keanaz . darnall baptist 258 scout band lead the parade all the way from the sportsman on darnall rd to the skating rink in high hazels park . mandeville st joined in at the meadow. i was in the cubs and scouts for 12 years and we always lead it . the mandeville mob looked like a set of street urchins with a few battered old bugles . whereas us the 258th darnall baptist band were clean smart and in tune. what school did you go to i went to whitby rd Keanaz 13-06-2006, 08:08 Whitby Rd and then Hurlfield (manor top) lived on Nightingale Street, and then Handsworth Rd opposite Triangle Petrol stn just after the iron bridge docmel 13-06-2006, 09:35 No one mentioned the Whit Parades in Western Park yet? memories of being a Cub Scout - lining up behind the lorry (was there a girl on there who was the 'Whit Princess' or something or am I dreaming?)out side St Annes, Netherhorpe, then marching through the streets eventually arriving in Western Park outside the Museum/Art Gallery where to a young eyes there seemed to be thousansd of people - always boiling hot and very very boring, but if you wanted to stay in our Cub Pack this was compulsory tosh13 13-06-2006, 11:58 That was the Red Lion, with the field at the back where the kids were allowed in. (be called a 'beer garden' these days). The White lion is nearer to the railway bridge  Well I got the Lion right artisan Lol CHAIRBOY 13-06-2006, 12:44 Weston Park was the venue. docmel 13-06-2006, 16:13 Weston Park was the venue. I stand corrected - it just goes to show what 20 odd years being away from your home town does to the memory! (Old age don't help either!) CHAIRBOY 13-06-2006, 16:43 Worry not, my memory is not what it once was but I used to go there on those occasions, God knows why, but it was the thing of the time. It's a mistake many still make but a constant reminder for me is the hospital of that name just up the road! I pass both every time I go to town. I wonder if you know that a few years ago, the gates at the Firth Building end of the park were removed and stolen? It's years since I've been in the park. I've heard the bandstand is coming back. I went there on Sunday afternoons with a blanket just to relax or to revise. Roger Taylor and his mum started their tennis playing at the Crookes Valley end, many years ago. All this was before blanket sports' coverage on TV took over my Sundays. Back to the original, the parks, the Star on Whit Tuesday was full of pictures from the Whit-Sings in the parks around Sheffield. As I pointed out in a Star Walk thread; Sunday, you went round to see folk in your Whitsun clothes - new snake belt etc, Monday was the park and Tuesday, the Star Walk. I like nostalgia, I love reminiscing but I shake my head in disbelief at that line-up! I soon swopped it by playing cricket. docmel 13-06-2006, 17:25 Sunday, you went round to see folk in your Whitsun clothes - new snake belt etc, Gawd - Sunday Whit Clothes - it always seemed I got a new pair of red sandals - trawled round teh family and neighbours for a few coppers. That does remind me of a funny/sad (depends on your outlook) situation one Whistuntide. We had all left Crookesmoor School and were in our first year at Myers Grove, so by then we were the 'big boys' - long trousers etc - and of course, in those days, compulsory school uniform - except for one poor kid. He was the only child of relatively old, and very strict/strange parents who forced him to wear his new Whit Clothes to School. I can still remember the poor sod in short trousers, sandals and some old fashioned jacket - not only did he get a real ribbing from all the kids but a severe bollocking from the year tutor as well retep 13-06-2006, 20:48 Here's a Whit gathering at Parkwood Springs, this is on the spot where the Ski Village buildings now stand. http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h182/sretep/whitparadeparkwood.jpg Betty1 16-06-2006, 16:32 I remember the Whit walk around Stannington - each church had a banner and we all got new socks and knickers ! Then in the afternoon there were races and games behind the Lomas Hall and tea in the church hall ! God, I am showing my age now ! CHAIRBOY 16-06-2006, 17:59 Amazingly, that went under the 'banner' of entertainment! Got the T-shirt. smileyjiver 04-01-2007, 22:11 I remeber the Whit Walks. I belonged to the Methodist Church at Parkwood Springs (previously Mount Tabor, Parson Cross) and from Parkwood Springs we used to walk to Royal Infirmary on Infirmary Road and sing outside the ward windows and up to Weston Park for the Whit Sing. The May Queen and her attendants always used to walk in front of the banner. I remember having new clothes for Whitsuntide and all the kids used to want to be one of the string bearers on the banner. What times! Missdan 05-01-2007, 15:00 Anyone remember the whitsun tide parades in darnall via High Hazles Park and Goffs sweet shop at Darnall We bought Goffs sweet shop in 1972 and lived there for 12 years before moving, I remember well the parades, my children used to love the music especially the big drum, I also remember with affection the parades in Meersbrook Park when I was young, we used to go in our new clothes and friends and relatives would give us sixpence or a shilling, which we would proudly put into out new bags. parsleydiva 26-06-2007, 20:06 Anyone remember the whitsun tide parades in darnall via High Hazles Park and Goffs sweet shop at Darnall Yes, I remember the Whit Walks in High Hazels Park.
