I can no longer get connected to the internet at home. When I check my modem the LED under the telephone symbol is constantly flashing. I also tried another modem as a test and although it doesn't have a telephone symbol it has an ASDL LED which again was flashing constantly but still no internet. Am I missing something simple or is something seriously buggered??
My modem is a Belkin jobby.
Cheers Ears

Have you got the original modem supplied by your ISP? If so, check it with that. If it still has problems connecting, then you either have a dodgy filter or the ADSL is faulty, which will either be internal telephone wiring in your house, BT wiring outside or a fault at the exchange. Have you contacted your ISP to see if there are any known faults?

If the other modem does connect, then it stands to reason that the Belkin is buggered, which isn't uncommon I'm afraid.

I'm assuming that both modems are ADSL here

do you get a dial tone on the phone line ?

could be a fault on the line or ... I recently had an elderly lady customer who complained she couldn't connect to the internet anymore, turns out she'd forgotten to pay the bill and they'd disconnected the service .... you have paid the bill to date haven't you ? ;)

No modem connects at the moment)I've tried 3 different ones). I have a series of checks to run. I'll see if that fixes the problem.
And yes I have paid the bill

Have you checked the filter ~ try swapping it with another one to see if that works?

Also, do you have more than one phone plugged in to (extension) sockets? Is each of those phones plugged in via a filter?

Another thing about filters ~ a friend of mine couldn't connect to the internet, and it turned out that she had plugged the filter into an extension cable, which was plugged into a two-way adapter which had something else plugged in. The filters should be plugged directly into the socket, and anything else (adapters, extension leads, etc.) should be plugged into the filter.

and after all that, if it still doesn't work phone your ISP, could be some BT engineer has deADSLed your line by accident

Ann really hit the nail on the head. If the ADSL LED flashes, you have not got a connection to the telephone exchange ADSL equipment.

BT only guarantee this signal to your master telephone socket.

1. Swap your filter.
2. Plug your modem into the MASTER telephone socket.
3. Use a different wire from the modem to the socket
4. Unplug EVERYTHING else from the telephone line.

If this does not get that light to go solid, you must call your ISP to report a possible fault.

For those who are more adventurous, you can always try the NTE5 test socket to isolate any possible interference from your internal extensions. If your BT master socket has screws either side of the front plate you can unscrew them and take off the front plate to reveal another little socket. If you plug into this socket you are plugging directly into the line coming from the exchange and disconnecting everything else. If you STILL cant get synchronisation with the exchange here.. you want your ISP to get BT to look into it.

Kitz (http://kitz.co.uk/sites/site_index.htm) has one of the best sites for information about anything related to ADSL.
