Hey, I just wanted to get an Idea of what people who live in the Ecclesall Area and use the Ecclesall rd. Somerfield think of the place.

Now I won't decieve you all, but I work there, however I am not going to be shocked and offended by comments on how rubbish the place is or stuff like that e.g. "The Staff are really rude"

Cheers :hihi:

Am I confusing another somerfields with the one that became a waitrose?

Kind of, the Waitrose used to be a Safeway, the one I'm talking about is infront of the big cliffs opposite Greystones road.

It is a good place to shop.
The staff are really helpful, even if some of the cashiers look as if they have been out on the razzle....or have worked too long shifts!
The only area I would like to see improved is the meat counter.
The presentation is not at all attractive and it seems pushed away in a corner. Having said that, the meat usually tastes much better than it looks.
The cheese counter gets better all the time. Excellent Manchego from Spain.
The veg is fine..and the fruit.
The bread is really nice and well presented, especially the rolls.
Good selection of wines.
Nice wide aisles.
Good parking.
Keep up the good work!:)

I used to work there years ago ( 1996 - 1999 ) - it was rubbish then so I'm not too surprised - I was however one of the very lovely staff described above!!!

staff are ok, but there area lot of funny haircuts. theres never enough people on the checkouts, theres never enough bread, its a bit scruffy, there are always roll cages in the aisles, the checkout people usually throw your stuff in the bags and break everything. its ok though, oh and its near my house

I use it fairly regularly .. the staff are much nicer than those at Tesco.

Meat and fruit are a bit dodgy, but bread is usually fresh.

Isn't it going to be closing in the near future to eventually be replaced by one of the 'big four' supermarkets?

Whenever I've been its reasonable enough nothing to complain about, but much prefer tesco just coz its cheaper!

Last I heard it was due to be knocked down for yet another block of flats. Finnegans own the land and lease it (their Head Office is further back, behind the office block). I thought it was supposed to be happening before last Christmas but haven't heard anything since.

It is OK, i ususally nip in on a Sunday, especially as i can use the launderette at the same time. The fruit and veg is sometimes lacking. They have some good offers, the staff are nice. As has already been said the aisles are wide and the parking is good (as long as the churchies have already gone). It is also not as mad as the Broomhill one, especially in September when there is nothing on their shelves.

Bad things. The recyling facilities have gone. They pack your bags, i know it is meant to be helpful, but they are not always careful and use too many carrier bags, I have reusable bags and i like to use them but it is difficult as you have nowhere to pack them.

And yes i heard it was going to be closed down as well.

I kno it's not much, but there are recycling facilities for Plastic bags at the front near the trollies.

Also I agree with the fact that some staff do not take care when packing bags, I see this happening when packing a home delivery.

The Roll cage problem should be solved now, the roll cages were only up there because the lift had broken, but now it's been fixed... thankgod :hihi:

This is quite a coincidence.

I visited this store this lunch time (around 1:25) as the usual sandwich shops were very busy. I bought several items for my lunch and found the place to be very sloooooooooooooooow (the use of excessive o's is to show how slow it was :D).

There was a guy constantly calling over the speaker system for people to go to the training room yet the checkouts were backing up with customers and the whole place really seemed to be the land of the dead due to the lack of movement.

The till I was at had an old woman paying for her stuff which took a while, but then the girl had to load her stuff in to boxes for home delivery while the line at the till built up. In all it took nearly 20 minutes to purchase my lunch in that supermarket!

I was going to come on here and write a similar thread, but you've saved my time :D

It's not somewhere that I'll use again. It's a bit of a dismal shop. Feels like a supermarket that's been forgotten. The staff all genuinely looked misserable and the motivation was seriously lacking. The speed of service was terrible. Compared to modern super markets that offer decent choice, bright cheerful shopping and friendly quick service it's still in the dark ages.

I thought the shaved head / short haired checkout person was going to kill himself, he looked close to tears. Is there a general motivation issue or do they really want to work that slow with faces that look like you've just massacred their families?

I don't expect huge smiles and everyone jumping for joy, but this place was depressing. Even if you visit Tescos on Abbeydale Road on the hottest, busiest of days you can expect a smile or two and some friendly welcome from the staff.

I'm sorry if this sounds dramatic, but it really was that bad. My chance shopping visit to them today will be the first and last time.

Yeah there alot of problems, as I say I wanted an idea of what people thought of the place.

It's funny, alot of the points brought up here I agree with, and I work at the place, but hey, what do I know? I'm just a lowly checkout operator.

I'm 17 and most of the people I work with are my age or slightly older, alot of people don't stay very long. There are many problems, but for fear of someone I work with reading this I won't list them. However if your really that interested, PM me.

Edit: Joke, don't really PM me

Still if your in when I'm working you can expect a welcome and a smile :D

You ought to be careful. If your boss is reading this, you could already be in trouble.

Funny that I should spot this thread as I hardly ever go in but did last night at about 8.30 -9.00 ish. The girl on the till was fine but asked the chubby guy slouched over the supervisors desk who was chatting about nothing in particular to the girl behind it to take some sweets off her. She was nibbling them and obviously wanted the temptation removing. He turned round and was extremely rude, virtually shouting at her to take my money and get on with her work. HIs behaviour, regardless of her inappropriate request, was dreadful.

I used to shop there, but no more - I now brave the speed bumps to Tescos I'm afraid.
The reasons: Poor quality selection of produce at double the price of Tescos. Staff continually outside smoking when there are queues 5 deep for the checkouts. Deli counter always unmanned - I actually had to go round myself at one point!
I do feel mildly sorry for the staff - they look so depressed but they just cant be arsed to do anything and its just annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I like the place, most of the problems are no ones fault, like the lift breaking.

But on another note, I would't really list all the problems in a Private message, In my opinion there are no MAJOR problems, I think most of the things that customers get annoyed with have been listed and I hope someone else has a look on here and takes notice.

What time was this? because after 8o'clock the deli counter shuts, although the cheese is self service.

I work there too and at the moment the company is going through some massive changes due to new owners. Alot of the staff are worried about their jobs not just because of this but because of problems with the lease. Staff are doing the best but sometimes it is out of there hands.
