View Full Version : Best place (online?) to buy a mobile phone !?
I've decided to get a new mobile phone (on contract).
I've been lusting over the sony ericsson p900 ... *droools*.
Where's the best place to get one!?
I'm thinking online will be cheaper ...
Also ... which is the best network to get it on!?
Thanks :-)
FairyNormal 29-05-2004, 09:20 I use O2 online and find them very reasonable. I just got a Samsung E700 free as an upgrade. They have loads of good phones most of the time and the tarrifs are great value too.
mr craig 29-05-2004, 10:33 A couple of my mates have used - www.singlepoint4u.co.uk and they've been happy with them. Its kinda hard to find what your looking for on the site tho,but that probably just me.
FetishFairy... did someone call you the other day from O2 asking if you wanted a free upgrade on Pay As You Go?? I was at work and said I'd call back but didn't. What's it all entail?

I just got a Philips 535 as a £10 upgrade from O2 and just had to agree to extend my contract.

Sorry to go O/T but what do you think of the Philips?? My upgrade is due in a couple of months and they look quite good.

Mine's not an upgrade from PAYG.
I have always used O2 but when my nokia PAYG died on me last year I couldn't afford to buy another phone. I looked at O2 and got a Sony Ericsson T300 free with their £20 a month online off peak 500 tarriff.
My upgrade got me a new phone but I had to change contract to get it free. I changed to their £25 tariff which gets me 100 anytime/any network minutes, 500/125 text/MMS and 500 wap minutes.
Take a look at O2 online (http://www.o2.co.uk) and see what you think.

I've been with these for a while and wasn't impressed to start with but they seem to be ok now. What I found astonishing was that it was cheaper for me to cancel my current contract and take up a new one than it was to upgrade.

Staying off topic, it's a great looking phone with lots of goodies like a composer, infra red i/o, camera (4 X zoom), etc.
There's a review here:

And a sample of the photo quality here:

The most important thing though is that the reception is better than my old Samsung.
Someone cold called me the other night (from India, I think!) to tell me of a special deal on the Three network.
I told him that:
a) His timing was bad because I have only just bought a new phone
b) To the best of my knowledge, the Three network does not work (correct em if I am wrong)
I didn't add that buying a Three phone would upset the people of Fulwood!

To point B - the 3 network for voice is fine, its just the video calls have "issues" out of 3G coverage it rolls back on to 02.
When you have a phone on a 12 month contract ... what happens when the 12 months is over ?
Can you convert it to pay as you go !?
If so ... can you get GPRS on pay as you go !?

Renew the contract.
No.
Yes, you can get GPRS on PAYG.

What is stopping you from converting the phone to PAYG !?
*cough* The law stops you *cough*
In the same way as modding a games console is illegal, I THINK modding phones is also illegal.
Although having said that there might be a way that you can just swap a contract sim card for a payg sim card.
You can convert Orange phones to PAYG when the contract expires. You just ring Orange and ask them to do it.
Looks like I will be on vodafone.
Just try and ring Vodafone up then when the contract runs out and ask them if you can convert to PAYG.
Either that or like I said, just renew teh contract.
I jus tasked Orange and they have 2 options.
If the phone is out of contract, there is a £20 charge
If it is in contract they want paying up on the full contract term to unlock it.
You could try buying an unlocked phone from eBay or www.expansys..com who have unlocked mobiles from £60.
Thanks rich, tony.
I don't want to buy an unlocked phone ... I will be getting a new phone on contract.
Funny that the phone is cheaper on contract (incl. cost of contract for 12 month) than it is on PAYG.
Anyway ... it's a good phone so I'll wanna stick with it and convert it to PAYG after the 12 months.
It will prob be on vodafone contract.
Can't wait ...
