any one got an idea what the problem could be ?
on the screen just a sad face appears
its ever since it has been near a magnet.
any advice would be appreciated, cheers.
Google is your friend (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771)
How long have you had it.
Magnets + hard drives = death.
Send it back to apple for a replacement to the new model.
Sounds like a corrupted hard drive. The croaking is the disk constantly trying to read and re-read knackared parts of the disk.

Why was it near a magnet? lol.
the drive will need reformatting and then the software will need reloading and you'll have lost all the music too
If he's had it near a magnet, chances are the drive will be knackared. Magnets and hard drives dont go well together.

the first time it was formatted the disk would have been in a randomised state so it should be possible to repeat this process
