Following my own problems in returning a lost dog (who was wearing an un-tagged collar), and a thread by Viking which seems to suggest that the dog he found didn't have a tag...

Is your pet chipped and/or tagged?

If not, why not?

yes both my dog and cat are chipped and tagged

 how did you answer that so quickly?

Does this software put the thread up before the poll is written? :suspect:

Takara is microchipped and she also wears two tags

One is her 'petlog' tag to say she's chipped and the other is a 'Petback Protect' tag which has a phone number on and her unique number.

I chose this way because of all the ransoms that are held on animals when theives know the phone number/address of the owner.
This way anyone that finds the dog (or cat) can phone Petback and she will be returned to me.

I also got lifetime cover for a one off payment of £149 where they will contact ALL rescue centres and vet surgeries with her details and also keep a DNA sample on record so that I can prove she's mine should it go to court.

However, the cats aren't tagged  as much as I'd like them to be they have managed to lose every tag so far!

They never stray far from home anymore and everyone around us knows they're ours so they don't have a microchip either.

Cat chipped by the RSPCA. Not much point tagging her as she doesn't go out. :)

you surprise me Lotti!!

I suppose there's no chance that a stranger in the area could run them over and not be able to notify you :?

Dog tagged, will probably get him chipped at some point, although he rarely leaves my side so I can't see him going missing!

Have you seen the whippet lost at Catcliffe thread Jess?

Any dog can get lost ;)

Our cats are both chipped. I'd tag them too except they must go through at least a collar every two weeks by loosing them! Bad kitties!

06-06-2006, 19:33
Yeah, I saw it. Did it ever turn up?

I know any dog can get lost, thats why he's tagged, and will someday get chipped. I would hate to lose him, I just meant he's not the type of dog to run off if the door is open or on a walk. He's too clingy!

Sorry to hear Brude is unwell :( hope he is feeling better and back to his usual self soon.

Kinda struggled to answer this actually, snake, rabbit, g pig and lizards are not tagged/chipped. Reminded me to get my horse done, I was going to get her freezemarked when I first got her but a new system of hoof engravement was starting, probably around enough to be worth it. There was a time when freeze marks were no good as theives would change the mark making it difficult to trace. Passports for horses have made everything a lot better. Wont babble on anymore but it would be good to enforce passports for all pets.

Of course there is.

However, they are not my cats so it is not my choice.

Until recently they never wore a tag, but I worried about them and went and bought them one each, they just lose them though (now I know why they never wore one)

At the moment I can't afford to take it upon myself to get them chipped (thanks to expensive puppy illness) but if and when I can pay for it, I will go and get it done for them. (I'm sure they'll appreciate that!)

Chipped for both of my cats, and anyone who moans about their car bonnets and my cats, kiss your ass goodbye :hihi:

Lotti

lol Venger, nobody moans about ours because she curls up and looks like a hat that someone has left, head and tail disappear into her fur so you can't see where she begins and ends!

All 4 of my cats wear tags with ID and the vet's number on and tritium light sources on their collars so that you can see them in the dark (black cats can hide in shadows and get their paws trodden on by accident in even a well lit house), and the two relatively recent arrivals are chipped as well.

The two that have lived here all their lives (Merlin's 14 and Tiffy's 12) in our little cul de sac and rarely venture out and even then into the tiny back yard aren't chipped, and I'd only get them chipped if I needed to move them out of their comfortable surroundings where they know exactly where they live, and where all of the neighbours know them too.

Aw Meds you are so lovely.

In our house, if someone stands on one of the cats (both are black) it is most definitely that cat's fault!

We often hear...

'Smitch are you TRYING to kill me??' or 'Smudge if you WILL put your tail under my foot!'

Having said that, the cats haven't actually got hurt yet - each member of the family has gone head over while trying to make sure they don't put weight on whichever cat they've stood on and the cats get off scott free

Can you tell us a bit more about this Jess? It sounds like it may be a good idea

Basically, it is a legal requirement in the UK for every horse to have a passport. A bit like a car registration. It has details of the horses markings (very specific), size, colour, breeding, date of birth, previous owners and any innoculations/drugs they have.

It is then illegal for anyone to sell a horse without a passport. This has made it more difficult for theives to sell on stolen horses as the new owner will then have to apply for a passport without these details (shows the horse is probably stolen)

My horse is a registered Section D Welsh Cob, she is registered with a society (Like most pure bed/pedigree horses are) and has a number which is also on her passport.

The original reason for having passports is because of a new law whereby livestock can not be burried when deceased. (To prevent spread of disease) When a horse/ cow/ etc dies you need to prove to the authorities what you did with the corpse. Documentation of all jabs/diseases etc prevent things getting into the food chain which shouldn't. I'm sure it is a lot more complicated than this but that's how I understand it.

It has only been introduced in the last couple of years and there has been a lot of discrepency but I'm sure once it is properly enforced, it can only be good.

Hope this answers your question Strix

That sounds a good idea. Gadget is chipped & also wears a tag. When we got his tag we decided to put all info we could think of on - name, address, phone no etc. Thats because years ago I found a puppy with a phone number on its tag, took it home to call the number (the things we had to do before mobile phones!), & realised I'd picked it up from directly outside the puppy's house  so had to walk back again!

My dogs are chipped, but the chips registered owners are the rescue that my dogs came from. They did this because some rescue dogs are dumped etc, and this way if a dog did end up at a vets or another rescue it would be returned to the original rescue to be rehomed. I'm not worried about it though, as I the rescue have our details so will be able to contact us should anything happen.

My dogs also wear a tag which has hubby's mobile number on, the rescue's number and the vets telephone number. I know legally you are supposed to have your name, pet's name and address. But I have had quite a few people looking at their tags and I don't like them to know my dogs name or my address.

Strix

Brude doesn't wear his address or name to prevent confusion.

He spends alot of time in other towns, so he has 3 tags containing 3 landline numbers, 2 mobiles, and 'I'm Chipped', as anybody finding a dog wandering the streets of Wallasey with a Sheffield number on his tag would probably assume he'd been dumped on the beach and either keep him or rehome him :(

He doesn't have his name on for kidnapping reasons.

My rottweiler is chipped, she has been since been a pup since rottweilers was been stolen from my old estate, then sometimes that did not work as police found 9m old rottweiler that was stolen not far from where i lived with its back of it neck cut and it died in the end, and the vets seem to think they was trying to get the chip out of the dog. My dog has not got no tag with name or address on only the green tag saying she is chipped.

Highfield Vets on London Road are chipping for £10 through the month of June if anyone is interested. It's a good saving, I paid £25 for each of my dogs.

£3.30 each I think they were at the engravers at Crystal Peaks market

Brando is getting chipped on Tuesday. Never had a pet chipped before and I may sound a little thick but does it hurt them? how big is the chip?:(

Strix
21-01-2007, 02:28
about the same size as a grain of rice

It's injected in, so it probably hurts a bit, but not as much as other things that can happen if he is lost and doesn't get home promptly :(

Thanks Strix, he probably wont even notice then - our vet always puts a pile of biscuits in front of the dog to distract them if they need an injection and it works every time!

mine are all chipped, Tagged and DNA profiled via Kennel club. considered ear tattooing too, but apparantly they dont stay very clear for long. I am slightly concerned by the chip situation though. Read this, relating to a microchipped husky who went missing (quoted from another forum)

Well in the end the chipping wasn't worth a damn . Poor Hania was knocked down and killed Thursday night on the motorway, They collected her and put her in their freezer. They have to keep the dogs for 28 days before they dispose of the body, They hadn't even thought about scanning her for a chip. also they said to Michelle that they collect 20 dogs a month and don't bother to scan. Hania was related to Anya they are from the WolfPoint kennel in Romania.
Our thoughts are with Michelle and her family
Run free at the bridge Hania, You are out of pain,
Sorry this is breaking my heart

Makes you think if your dog dont wear a tag. should be COMPULSARY for shelters, wardens etc to scan all strays picked up, dead or alive.

baileys_mum
21-01-2007, 12:57
I thought it WAS compulsory for them to scan, thats why they make a big thing of people getting it done

Lotti
21-01-2007, 13:03
Takara had her chip done with her second lot of injections and she made me cry!!

She was fine with the injections and then she made it quite clear that the chip hurt! She jumped, then she cried, then she shook, it was horrible, she was given a biscuit and she suddenly forgot all about it!!

BlackVelvet
21-01-2007, 13:51
unfortunately, it would seem not, and not bothering to scan seems more common than I thought

baileys_mum
21-01-2007, 14:03
That is rather naughty then, after all, why pay all that money for no one to bother

medusa
21-01-2007, 14:03
As far as I'm aware, it's never been compulsory for anybody to scan animals picked up dead in the road, and Sheffield Council and the cleansing department don't remove collars or tags as identifying features either.

All they do is take a basic description of the animal and where they were picked up, which is conclusive if you're looking for a very unusual animal and the person recording the find knows what they're looking at, but not a lot of help if you're looking for a black and white cat (when Tico went missing I knew that if he was picked up they'd know because he was blue, but I know more black and white moggies than I can shake a stick at, so there's no proof that it's even your animal, and they won't let you come down and check either).

BlackVelvet
21-01-2007, 14:07
you would think though, that an obviousy well bred pedigree dog, as distinctive looking as a siberian husky, would make them think " must be someone missing her somewhere". the fact she was missing was well publicised, posters, ads, placed on doglost

Wow, Strix, that poll has the best answer ever on it :hihi: Putting a collar on Peanut would not only be dangerous but also very hard. He doesn't sit still long enough, Plus the collar would have to be as big as a milk bottle top he's so small

Yep,
Just chipped though. Cats don't need collars as they never go out. Bit reluctant to tag the dog, as she is so friendly, that if anyone had her name, she may never return. Just being paranoid!

dogs are chipped but they cat is not, she will be getting done when her jabs are due. Reason she has not been done is i forgot, as i got all my others from rescue they were already done!

P.s i am a bad owner, can anyone help me ? I have not changed my address with petlog for the dogs. I have lost all paperwork and they are still registered to my old house (its still my house so i would know if they were found) how would i get it sorted?

the very least she should have on a tag is 'I'm chipped', the chip company tag, or preferably a mobile number for you. Brude has a set of 3 tags with 5 phone numbers and 'I'm chipped' on the last face. Not his name or address, as this would be of no use if we lost him in Liverpool or Cambridge, and would only serve to suggest we'd gone out of our way to abandon him

When I find a dog with no tag on (even if it has a collar) I have to say, I'm less hopeful of the owner caring enough to be bothered to look for it, and don't hold my breath over finding a chip either

a tag tells a finder that somebody cares enough to want their dog back quickly, regardless of what it actually says

I'm going to get Peanut chipped next time we go to the vets. (He doesn't like the vets, so don't tell him we're going. :hihi: )

I've seen people who've tried to put a collar on a rabbit. Its funny though, cos most rabbits don't actually have a defined neck. Its like the collar sits on its shoulders :hihi: :hihi:
