View Full Version : What to feed a sick dog
Brude is unwell.
I shan't give you the gory details, but the vet said he is to have 'bland food', so he isn't getting Bakers complete for dinner, but he is now turning his nose up at the bland dog biscuits I've given him.
Any ideas what to feed him?
I have debated about Jacobs crackers, rice, pasta (though he doesn't like that unless it has tuna in), scrambled egg....
:help:
pinklady 06-06-2006, 18:46 when my dog had an operation, her bland food consisted of mixed rice with boiled chicken or cod, weetabix or scrambled eggs. Only problem was getting her back onto dog food!
hope brude is feeling better soon xxx
I could do egg and rice, I suppose
*pictures the mess Brude can make spitting grains of rice all over the floor :suspect: *
Chicken breast maybe? Not always the best thing to feed poorly pets though, and expensive.
pinklady 06-06-2006, 18:57 LOL, i had a .. er ... slightly over weight dog (really fat but now deceased) who i put on a diet by buying the 'low cal' chicken and carrot Pal dog food. He used to spit all the carrot bits out all over the place, oh what fun i had soaking off dried pieces of carrot off my units / skirting boards / walls etc!

chickens fine as long as its boiled then drained, and mix it with rice.
Chicken has always 'disagreed' with Brude :gag: so that's off the menu chez Strix ;)
boiled chicken and rice is what we gave Takara when she was ill. She had a sensitive puppy stomach (bless) and we had to take her off her normal food for a while.
Well we don't have any eggs in the fridge, and I'm not well either, so a trip to the shops is looking unlikely. Especially as I cannot decide whether to take Brude and his unfed body for a walk, or to leave him here where he doesn't have the emergency access to the garden he needs right now :(
Rice and tuna then?
I might be having some too :suspect:
Applegrim 06-06-2006, 19:27 It must be boiled chicken and rice, thats what the vet told us,hope everything goes well!
He can't eat chicken - never has been able to without problems afterwards
(don't you love it when people don't read whole threads? )
When/if my babs are ill i feed them scrambled eggs with rice.... ???
We went with the tuna and rice - with a few peas, coz I heated too many for mine
He wolfed it down, and decided that he could tackle the biscuits he had earlier rejected
Just for added beagleness :suspect: he said he would bite me if I tried to give him medecine  He spat out the first shot, so I scraped up the paste and wiped it on his nose so he had to lick it off, then had a right royal battle with the rest. After we'd finished wrestling, he went to inspect the rug where he'd spat the stuff out, and licked up the residue :loopy:

for the medicine, try a syringe without the needle, just pop it in the side of his mouth ... and hold his head up, either that or cling film all furniture and floors!
It came in a syringe thingy Pinklady :(
pinklady 06-06-2006, 23:15 teeheehee, sorry, but oh the memories! LOL
Royal canin have a food specially for sensitive stomachs.Good luck.

Haha thats SO typical! Sounds very familiar!
Ive always heard that chicken & rice is best for dogs, but as that's not an option for Brude I think that rice with tuna or eggs is a good choice

Strix,
Sorry to hear about your dog. On the bright side, there are many outlets for the bland food he requires.
May I suggest a trip to any Brewsters Family Pub should fulfil his dietary requirements.

 Brude doesn't eat children
:hihi:
If your dog has had diarrhoea............and ur stuck wot to feed it, give it boiled potatoes and cottage cheese mixed together to stop it and give them nourishment too. We have tried this, and it does work, and it's also very good for the dogs.

Ambrosia 16-07-2006, 01:37 My monster can`t get on with dog food most of the time, she can have a little bit but not often as she has health problems.
She has porridge once a day (has to be made with goats milk and water with a small amount of honey or she spits it out), mashed potatoes and chicken and some dried food.
Try the mashed spuds when he`s ill but replace the chicken with something else like a small amount of tuna.
Hope he`s ok !
He's right as rain now, thanks for asking
TrashyBook 16-07-2006, 21:14 Please be really careful when giving potato to dogs.....
One of our standard poodles ate some leftover boiled potatoes once, and it killed him. They gave him bloat: http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/bloat.html
This was the dog that happily digested apple scented soap-on-a-rope, and numerous plastic dog bowls.... yet something as simple as potato was his undoing.
Still makes me cry to think of it

So sorry to hear about your poodle  but i had heard that you should not feed potatoes to dogs before though it does not seem to be general knowledge .
Ambrosia 17-07-2006, 11:07 wow! sorry to hear about your dog, thats absolutely awful my heart goes out to you.
I had no idea about the potatoes at all but really she seems fine with them, she has one meal a day and they`re mashed with chicken and it`s her fav meal she has the porridge and dried food too.
She`s eaten the spuds for months and never had a problem, perhaps she`s just not prone to bloat or as it`s not a large meal it dosen`t bother her as she`s not an overeater she eats small meals and is very picky.
Originally i fed her rice or pasta with it but no matter how i mixed it up and shredded it she would not eat the rice/pasta and if she couldn`t pick the chicken out she wouldn`t eat at all.
She`s a very picky dog and with her medical condition she`s under a very close eye all the time.
zerocool 17-07-2006, 12:45 when our dog was dying of cancer, we tried to feed him all sorts of things, he really enjoyed cream crackers for a while, and bread with meat in it. as we were trying to keep him alive and food in his belly so anything he sniffed, he was given. He was only given two weeks to live but he carried on for 8 more weeks, bless him.
He really enjoyed rice, chicken and scrambled eggs.
Keep trying with things!
awwww im so glad to hear Brude is well again, i saw the thread and couldnt beleive it. when our Murphy got that really bad gastroenteritus ( sp?? ) and lost so much weight in juts a few days we thought we was gunna lose him, the vets even let us take our own bits of food in for him they told us only chicken, rice, eggs, cereal, etc.. he was so weak even chewing the chicken was to much trouble but we managed to get some bread soaked in tuna juice down him. all irelivent now though thankfully seen as Brudes better. big me hugs to him xxxxxxxxxxxxx ( really should make effort to come give real life hugs shunt i :| )

Aww bless, i am so sorry to hear that happened to your dog. Never heard of that happening before. It was something that i checked over and over again, and even spoke to a vet about it (the boiled potatoes and cottage cheese). When our 2 bitches had all the pups.........around 3 weeks after the bitches developed severe diarrohea. So after checking on the internet and phoning the vets, we tried the potatoes and cottage cheese. It worked wonders. Now, if any of the dogs get poorly tums again, thats what we give them, but they don't have a massive bowl full, just in moderation, and it really does work for ours.
