Here's your opportunity to seek an extra days holiday. The TUC have launched a campaign to press for an extra day a year. Go here:

Which day off do you want? (http://www.worksmart.org.uk/holiday/)

and vote.

I voted for St George's day, if anybody's interested.

OK.....

How about

June 15th (Waterloo Day)
October 23rd (Trafalgar Day)
October 25th (St Crispian's Day / Battle of AGincourt)

Honestly, I'm not a Francophobe...:-)

I vote for St George's day. The only problem is that it comes very close to other bank holidays (easter and the early May one).

So the October one would be more practical cos it would break up the long stretch from August to Christmas.

It's half term that week, so it would make sence.

I'd rather they had 1 in May, 1 in October and then St George's Day as well... I'm sick of so-called "national pride" revolving around old wars, so celebrating our patron saint would be excellent!!

Why is "national pride" revolving around wars any different or worse than "national pride" revolving around some ancient Turkish guy who killed a dragon once (or so we're told)?

Apparreently we get the least of any country in Europe. One more sounds great. I'd like one in September. The weathers still good, adn it would break up the autumn

Because he obviously didn't exist (at least in that form), whereas the wars we 'celebrate' killed millions upon millions of people. liking the word-play though!!

What about the poor dragon? :( :P

And the word play was unintentional, it was a typo.

A sensible time for an additional day off would be around Sept /Oct /Nov there is a distinct lack of occasional days off around that time..looking at my office planner from a distance..without my glasses on that is!

I voted to get New Year's Eve off.

Nobody wants to work it anyway and half the time people only work till dinner and then slope off to t'pub anyway.

No, i mean its pointless as there is nothing to celebrate.

Before people fight a small local war about celebrating our old wars, I'd better add that I was kidding....

My suggestions were meant as a joke.....

I can see why people are suggesting St George's Day, but it seems to me that if we are to be an inclusive society we should not be focussing on a mythical early Christian figure. Most self-professed "Christians" aren't really that anyway, we are a secular society even if religion causes tensions and divisions. I would like to see a holiday instituted that would celebrate something broader. Not wars or famous victories. And we are supposed to have a United Kingdom (unless it is proposed to have different holidays for each of Scotland, Wales and N.I.) so it needs to be something the whole country could commemorate.

I don't have any easy answers, but was thinking along the lines of some event that benefitted the whole community, like the foundation of democracy with the beginning of Parliament, or the abolition of slavery, or the beginnings of trade unions and working-class recognition and identity. It may seem prosaic, but these things have affected our lives more than individual saints or battles. Of course, if you want a really momentous event involving a battle, why not the Norman Conquest? Very convenient for an autumn break as the battle of Hastings occurred on 14 October...in the end the Conquest may have been a good thing.

So there we are--perhaps this will provoke more discussion.
