My car was written off about 18 months ago, there was severe damage to the chassis and the underneathy-thingy and it wasn't just uneconomical to repair, it was impossible.

let me stress now, before you accuse me of being a bad driver, it wasn't me!!!!!!!

Anyhow; I've just found out that the car is now being driven again; although I know about insurance, I don't know about write-offs and stuff - would the car be able to drive again? even if the chassis n stuff was replaced?

I always thought that if the chassis was damaged than it couldn't be fixed??

You can fix just about anything .
Beware of cars like this when buying even after being done up they remain write offs , so you could buy a car for a couple of grand be unlucky and get it nicked and the insurance company will only pay you about 25 quid scrap value they never pay out on the same car twice .
Always get an HPI check

There are a series of rightoff classifications. Most cars can be fixed but the insurance companies usually decide that if the car would cost 50% as much of its value to be fixed then it is a rightoff.

Your insurance company then sells this car on to a scrap yard where it can be resold as parts or a project car to be done up. There are plenty of category D cars on the road, they have basically been completely fixed but due to the previous damage they are not worth any wear near as much money.

There are plenty of category D cars on the roads like B.M.W's that have basically been completely fixed but due to the previous damage they are not worth any wear near as much money as Relient Robins

My words exactly Gaz.

It's happened to me. In fact I checked only the other day on a car I had that was written off while it was parked. It's still running round. I wonder if the new owners have the first clue?

You made me re-read my post then, I was VERY confused for half a second. Must be more exhausted from the 5-a-side than I thought.

I got a carlton written off, which I saw on the road a couple of months later.

I was told that one thing the insurers have to take into account is that any work that is carried out has to be guaranteed for 3 years. A DIY mechanic can do it up and sell it on privately, 'sold as seen'

I work in insurance so here goes.

There are 4 categories of write off, those been A, B, C or D, if the write of is a cat A or B it is illegal to put it back on the road.

^^

I have my underwriting head on and can confirm this is true. Cat C usually needs and independant engineers report to confirm it is now road worthy and a Cat D (usually a cosmetic write off/ uneconomical repair) needs a valid MOT certificate since the accident/claim.

You ned to check the MIAFTA register. Insurance wrote mine off by mistake last year, so I was driving around in it then we found out somehow and asked the police. They said I could have been arrested as once it is on that register no-one owns it.

The insurance gave me a hire car for about 2 months and compensation for the hassle until they got it off the register.

Damage to the chassis was probably cat C, but it can be jigged straight.
Nothing illegal about fixing it and then selling it on, so long as the write off is declared. It is still possible to get insurance on a repaired vehicle and they will pay out the appropriate amount, not just £25 scrap value, although you may have to pay extra and provide an engineers report to get the insurance.
