View Full Version : Living in Worksop
happysherpa 05-06-2006, 19:48 This is my first ever Thread, Wish me Luck!! :D
Im living in Worksop :( and have been for the last 10 years. I have never been on a night out in Worksop, as find the atmosphere very frightening.. people seem so loud and aggressive. I normally get the train in to Sheffield, find the city more friendly.
Shopping is Worksop town is Pointless.. unless you need to buy a card or a Mobile Phone. So again.. a train trip in to Sheffield or meadowhall.
The market is very disappointing too and located quite a distance from the main town center. Starting this month is the new Continental Market, which will hopefully bring a new atmosphere to the town.
I ask you Forum watches.. those who have visited Worksop.. what your experience and opinion is on this wonderful town..
Lindseyw 05-06-2006, 20:21 i've never lived there but do live in S26 - not too far away, however, given the experience I do have of Worksop I have to say I wouldn't want to live there. The pubs in an evening seem very 'charged' almost like something is waiting to happen. It seems that finding anything there is virtually imposssible, and spread out in the strangest way.
Ah I long for the days when I can move back to Sheffield... Everything you'd want within a mile.
Worksop is now my closest town, when the shops are closed the place looks haunted, when the shops are open it just looks useless. I popped into worksop today needing a few items from B&Q... unfortunately the few items they stocked were not the few I wanted.
Night out in Worksop?... do the cafe's open that late? Last time I went the only nightclub was above woolworths and was the size of your average garden shed.
Sheffielders... visit Worksop and you'll learn to love Rotherham.
dardandec 05-06-2006, 20:47 I used to live near worksop about eighteen years ago and used to go quite a lot shopping etc.I still go now sometimes as my parents live out that way. I like worksop as the shopping area is quite close nit,Parking is easy and has an argos and quite a few other shops I like.I used to go out for a few beers too in the evening with a couple of mates. I dont know what its like now but it wasnt the friendliest of places in the evening. On the whole not a bad place but I dont think I would live there....:|
happysherpa 05-06-2006, 20:54 Worksop offers nothing to his residents.. esp the younger ones. Im 26 yrs old and am bored of living in a 'garden shed'. We dont have any entertainment venues.. apart from a very small cinema..called the regal center... altho not sure if its stil open

Its so scary going out at night.. it does feel people are out to cause trouble.. and would'nt think twice smacking you in the eye.. for no reason..
The shops are spread out in a very strange way.. and when you have searched long and hard.. they dont stock your size lol and advise you to go meadowhall haha
I dont think the ladies have trouble buying clothes.. as there is a few ladies clothes shops but the Men have to make do with little box size Burtons..located upstairs of Dorothy Pirkins.Which only stock sizes Medium and Large.
Thumbs down

astraman 05-06-2006, 21:31 The last time I went to Worksop, it was closed!!!

happysherpa 05-06-2006, 21:39 i noticed yesterday.. when walking past the canel.. a sign saying No Fishing.. altho if you took notice .. the canel is very unkept, the water is very merky and lots of rubbish floats on the surface... maybe the sign should read.. NO FISH lol
happysherpa 05-06-2006, 21:44 upto yet 66 people have viewed the thread... but only VERY few have responded.. so not only are people not visiting Worksop..but also avoiding dicussing it haha

Theres a wilkinsons what more could you ask for...
We lived there for 3 years and we liked it. But then we liked the peace and quiet and we don't go out drinking. We loved that we could leave things in our garden without worrying it was going to get pinched. We loved how it was near to clumber park for picnics. The town centre was okay if you just wanted a few items and even better that the parking fee's were cheap.
neeeeeeeeeek 05-06-2006, 22:16 I used to go to the job centre to fix the computers and stuff every now and again and I can't say I was very impressed with the place. I suppose I did not get to meet a fair cross section of the population, just the unemployed and some job centre staff, I have never felt the desire to go back!
dardandec 05-06-2006, 22:16 Berries music shop too.Fantastic shop,it all depends what your after. You cant really compare anything with the likes of meadow hell.Even sheffield town centres not that good..:)

'nuff said! :P
hiya, i live smack bang in the middle of Chesterfield and Worksop, to drive to worksop takes me around 9 minutes in a car, and Chesterfield it takes about 20, but, i would go to Chesterfield everytime, Worksop is awful, ive only ever been on one night out there, and i will never go again!i know where your coming from Sherpa!

i guess people living in worksop are lucky to live so close to the Countryside.. it only takes a few minutes drive out of town to Clumber Park.
The Parking isnt that cheap  esp for a town center that as litttle to offer.. Wilkinsons is ok, needs a litttle face lift tho.. and some totty working behind the tills lol maybe a few mantonites haha

Hey Grownsy.. you could always bob in to Clowne :hihi: thats as a stunning Town Center and is a great night out..

Yes, but with respect there are hardly any places in the country that can beat Sheffield for the proximity and quality of the countryside. So I am afraid Worksop loses out again.
PS.My ex:) boss :gag: lives there so that is one more negative thing.
I was there on a job a few months ago and I remember walking through the town centre at lunchtime, trying to find anywhere that wasn't a greasy spoon. There seemed to be at least twenty places advertising artery-clogging all-day-breakfasts and nothing else...
Lived in Worksop for 8 years from the late 1980's to mid 1990's - the town was a complete dump then. Nominated the place for Crap Towns - baffles me how it didn't get in when slightly better places like Ashford, Kent did.
Poor old Worksop. I'd think it's OK as a place to live. There are limited amenities: probably as the surrounding towns are just slightly too near for it to develop a strong catchment area of its own. And Clumber Park is just on the doorstep.
I can't say I endorse matsalleh's comment:
with respect there are hardly any places in the country that can beat Sheffield for the proximity and quality of the countryside
The whole Sheffield and Derbyshire thing is somewhat over-hyped.
Monsal Dale, for example, on a sunny day is superb. But quite a bit of the time the bleak moors and dreary dry stone walls can be :gag:.
absynthfairy 06-06-2006, 11:23 I don't mind worksop - my boyfriend is the musical director for their operatic society so I spend a fair few hours in the Regal watching their productions. Wouldn't want to go there for a proper night out mind, went to a karaoke there once and this girl tried to pick a fight with me because I was "too gooda singer fur a karoooke"...nice.
stewtheowl 06-06-2006, 12:15 Ahhh ive lived in sop since i was little. Its basically thee worst town ive ever come across (other than Barnsley). I do spend a fair part of my time in sheffield becuase there is more to do, more to see and the people seem to be happier. Sop has a huge drug problem to, with more heroin addicts per percentage of population than any other area in the country. I live on a housing estate that is populated by familys who have moved out of sheffield and couldnt give a toss about the town, and lets face it, why would they?
A night out in the town centre isnt so bad, but with a lack of nightlife were all forced to go to the ikon (the only club in town, above woolies). Its like a shed with flashing lights and rubbish music.
Worksop does have plus points though, the bypass......

Especially on a Sunday when the whole area is choked with day trippers. A drive round the quiet lanes of The Dukeries is far nicer.
I go out in worksop occasionally, it used to be because someone we knew worked in a bar, now it's seen more as a challenge, getting home in one piece.
When I say occasionally, it's less than once every 18 months.
deadheadfred 06-06-2006, 12:33 Never seen any of it other than the inside of the Frog & Nightgown (when we've had a gig there) and the adjoining Indian restaurant, so I'm not qualified to comment on the town itself, but a mate of mine lives at Gateford which seems quite nice.
stewtheowl 06-06-2006, 13:08 I had my nose broke outside the frog, still not sure why.
Gateford is bascially a sheffield overflow

I think it's cheap, 50p for an hour is ok imo.

heh, I live out in gateford, which is full of people who don't give a crap about the town (I know I don't) I visit the town maybe once a month to maybe go to the bank or something like that. I do like living in gatford because it's nice and quiet, no troublemakers and no theiving. Everything is a few minutes away, unlike sheffield where you would need 20 mins to get anywhere. Tesco (we have 2 tescos now in worksop!) is either a 5 min walk up the road or the other one is a 2 min drive. Couple of hardware stores just around the corner from tesco.
IMO its a much better place then sheffield (well the gateford part anyway)
edit- also the college is good too (worksop college)

According to the store locator on Tesco's website - there is only ONE Tesco in Worksop. There was another (I think it was on Newgate Street) but this closed years ago.

Yeah north notts college sucks......i work there! haha
The only problem with gateford is that theres nowt there, other than houses, a school and a soon to be opend pub (HURAH!!). Its close to the A57 so you can make a quick escape if you want to get on the m1/a1!
The major employment in the area is a sandwitch factory, and two distribution centres (BnQ and Wilkos).
Thinking about it now,the sop really does suck quite badly.
And whats it with the Guardian? Its the worst local paper in the world.
Pah

Theres one being built at gateford. Will be open in a few weeks time. Think its an express. Theyre opening a Netto next door. Wow Two nettos.....thats all we need
happysherpa 06-06-2006, 14:17 ok guys you have won me over... im lucky to be a resident in Worksop, i should have never complained .. im grateful to live here because.. it boasts of having two tescos, two Nettos, a florishing canel.. cafes that promote unhealthy eating... aggressive pub crawlers that break your nose!!
does anyone know any negatives of living in the workSOP ??
stewtheowl 06-06-2006, 14:35 Some guy was on radio one on saturday, did a quiz called local legends. 5 Questions about Worksop. He got them all right. First person to do so. Was called Stewart.....He put worksop on the map apperntly

stewtheowl 06-06-2006, 14:43 The kids have asbos like GCSES i think he said.
Places to avoid in worksop - Everywhere but Gateford and sparken hill!

100% certain, there are signs on the railings about it where the bulding is going on.
djscottk 06-06-2006, 17:59 oh lol, i used to live in retford, sorry East Retford.
lovely, quaint and quite a pleasant place to live.
Worksop, was a bit too common back then, I doubt it has changed.
happysherpa 06-06-2006, 18:44 haha yes i just started working in retford.. its loads better... think im gonna uproot from this common town of worksop.. and find me a nice country cottage in retford. its so much nicer.. and the country side is amazing.. fields of poppies and sheep...
ok im tired.. and my words are random.. i sound like a 80 year old.. i only look 12
stackmonkey 07-06-2006, 09:41 its so much nicer.. the country side is amazing.. fields of sheep...
I was never worried out you until now...:D
reditiger 07-06-2006, 15:23 I live in Gateford...i work in Sheffield, I shop in Sheffield although i do go out in Worksop on a Saturday night!
JSquires 08-06-2006, 11:49 The job market in worksop is growing and that helps. The more jobs, the more money, the more content people are and the less problems. I think its in a nice part of the country and could just do with an economic boost.
Im laughing so much reading this! Lived just outside worksop all my life and at the very first opportunity I moved, when I was 20. Still got family and friends there and my blokes from there too so we go back every few weeks and alsways end up having a good time but think thats the company! At the mo we're looking to buy and know we could get something really nice and much bigger for our budget in Worksop than Sheffield but the thought of moving back there turns my stomach!! Its so dull, and there is NOTHING to do so wonder the kids are all getting into bother! I can just imagine what town will look like today 'cos the suns out! LOL! There will be beer bellys on show all over- and thats the woman! hehehe!!
happysherpa 10-06-2006, 11:18 i just got back from worksop town center.. OMG Sarah you are soo right.. i think Worksop people are... erm erm i have only one word to discribe them.. but i cant say it.. incase it causes offence.
anyone that dosent live in worksop... do you have a spare room??
I left Sheffield to live in Worksop in 1960,to get married at the Priory Church where my husband then was a choir boy.We lived in Lincoln Street,no 60.My 2 children were born there, the first was born at Sutton in ashfield then onto Kilton when he was a few days old.We then moved to no35 Cheapside where my daughter was born and delivered by Dr Anderson.I spent some of the happiest times of my life in good old worksop.I still have relatives there. My ex husbands brother Roy(dec) owned The Frog And Nightgown but that was a long time ago.The shops were good then and could get anything. The park was in good nick also, used to take my son to feed the swans.Anyone used to go bluestalking near the Lion gates??good memories.Left in 1963 to come to Australia and never looked back:cool:
happysherpa 10-06-2006, 12:46 Glen..do you have a spare room lol
i decided to head down to the farmers market yesterday.. brought a little spice to Worksop.. plus some ostridge eggs.

No me neither, unless you want to work in manton Wood (where there are some good jobs but a little limiting if you want a career) Been looking at houses on the net and Sheffield it is, I dont mind sacrifising a bedroom for a better nightlife!
happysherpa 12-06-2006, 16:14 you can always socialise with meee.. im bored..living here in worksop.. im sooooo alone lol

i couldnt find anything at all, plus salaries are better in sheffield although you do have the higher travelling costs.

Worksop is where I began the career path that got me where I am today too.

The best chicken curry in the world ever from there!

Worksop has Clumber on its doorstep so for countryside there's nothing more you could ask for.

Worksop's a nice place its just the chav's dominate the town centre so people tend to avoid it.

i avoid it because the shops are rubbish!
happysherpa 18-06-2006, 14:52 i just avoid it
snazzlestar 07-12-2006, 19:11 The best thing about Worksop is the view as you're exiting on the A57 back out!!!
I lived in Andover for a while and its about on par with that imo - ****e!!!
Why are they building a brand new housing estate right opposite drugville; Manton Villas????
The best thing can only be Clumber Park.
happysherpa 07-12-2006, 19:32 Worksop is a load of old ****
Im happy to live on the furthest estate out of Worksop... its still to close tho :hihi:

keithhazel 08-12-2006, 17:30 i ahve only been a few times, the last was when i was working in sheffield for 2 nights and rather then trail all the way home i managed to get a cheap travelodge night at worksop..i got off the train, map in hand but didnd know which way round the map was, so i thought rather then risk a walk in the wrong direction i will ask the first person i saw, it was an elderly couple who had come off the same train as me as it happened, i asked them if they had any idea of direction to head for travelodge....she ummed and arred a bit and then we figured yes it was near a church in that direction...but she was concerned for me walking a way in the wrong direction...so without a hesitation she said..follow us round to train station carpark, got in her car, husband relegated to back seat...and they took me there......was the question what do i think of the people in Worksop lol..pretty bloody friendly if you ask me...
happysherpa 08-12-2006, 17:37 ha ha ha well done :) You came off alright... normally they would have punched you in the face and nabbed off with your map lol ..seriously.. there is some dodgy folks here.
How waas the travelodge?

How waas the travelodge?
the travelodge was brillaint, the best i have used, very clean and nothing falling off the walls or cupboards, and also the little chef next door was brilliant, staying at travelodge you was given a 25% discount voucher for little chef, normally dont go to them as feel ripped off but went this time and had the most fantastic meal, huge portion and expertly cooked....never thought worksop was dodgy...will not walk from the station in the dark should i go again...thanks for warning..
happysherpa 09-12-2006, 10:16 Depends what time your walking from the station... just be careful nt to run in to any hoodies.. they probably bag you..and throw you into the canal lol
Davemantis 09-12-2006, 11:16 dont know people in worksop and i live just outside ???

Hey happysherpa - please start another one! This one has been hilarious.
I shouldnt laugh really, but i just couldnt help it - and to think i nearly bought a house there, well Gateford actually! This thread just confirms I had a lucky escape indeed! No offence to people who do love Worksop though lol !
happysherpa 12-12-2006, 10:00 Hey are you frying all worksop in the same pan?? How very dare you
There is a few nice people surviving in Worksop.. they are a delicacy :hihi:
I dont want to start a new forum yet... i have soo much more to talk about here.
Ill make a fresh topic beginning of the new year :D
snazzlestar 12-12-2006, 19:03 You want to stop talking sherp's and start thinking up an escape plan he he he :) !
Some places are just never destined for change and I think Worksop is one of them. Shame as it is.
Get out while you still can! 99.9% of us posters can not be wrong surely!
happysherpa 13-12-2006, 09:02 Worksop is having a make over..... in 2007 we will see a new cinema, bingo hall, new resturants and a fabulous new Tesco. I aslo hear Asda is interested on a plot of land somewhere in the area.
thats not all.. the new schools and leisure center will also be complete... which im sure all the nice Children will be pleased.
I hear that town center is having a face lift to... we may see the return of M&S and some other well known Shops =o))
Davemantis 13-12-2006, 11:44 i went out 4 a drink the other week for the 2st time in worksop

happysherpa 13-12-2006, 11:46 to be honest... Worksop is bearable when your slightly intoxicated
Davemantis 13-12-2006, 14:26 this is going to be bad but i didnt have a drink all night lol
reditiger 14-12-2006, 16:17 this is going to be bad but i didnt have a drink all night lol

happysherpa 14-12-2006, 16:48 unfortuantly... the lower part of town.. around the litten tree area.. is probably the best part of town...

reditiger 16-12-2006, 17:38 OOOh sofa...am braving worksop tonight...my sofa does suddenly look a lot more appealing
happysherpa 16-12-2006, 20:23 if you fail to post a comment here again.. we will assume you never survived you night out in Worksop..

happysherpa 19-12-2006, 15:27 Walking around Worksop in that outfit would be a huuuuge mistake... i avoid attracting attention to myself.. incase of attack of the hoddies
reditiger 20-12-2006, 13:25 link not working for me
If charity shops, drinking (whilst sticking to the floor), fighting and paying way too much for parking is your thing the Worksop is for you!!! And apart from lacking a cinema, a childrens park nor filled with needles and dog mess, decent clothes shops, a DVD rental store, streets you would let your kids play out on; living in Worksop is fantabidosey!!!
Ok so its not the greatest place on earth, but name me a place that has all of the above (ie total opposite of Worksop) and i would move there in a flash. Everyone would, its not actually the town thats a bad place, its the shower of s**t living there!! (Sorry to the 13% of decent people living in Worksop)...
Worksop is not as bad as people make out. Obviously it does not have the shops most people look for but its not far to Sheffield,Medowhall, Retford etc. Its on the way up, soon to be a new Tesco and hopefully cinema which will be good. The new Priory Centre has brought a nice new look to the lower end of town.
Yes there are many less desirable people living here but every place has the same.
My experiences in the hospital have been great, only bad thing there is the parking but thats the same at all hospitals. When my daughter was born ther start to finish process was excellent and when she had to go back in for a issue she had we couldn't fault the excellent service.
I live in Gateford which is a very nice part of Worksop, lived here for over 5 years, mainly made up of people who live here and commute as Worksop is a good site to get to the A1 and M1. Mainly new (10 years and younger) housing.
happysherpa 28-11-2008, 17:25 Since i wrote my orginal message on the forum.. i have discharged myself from Worksop, i know live else where lol
Since i left, i only return to visit family and M&S from time to time... that is only thing that attracts me back. Its not a pretty place to hang out... doesnt matter which direction you enter Worksop, there is an eye sore... it always appears to be raining there lol
I do hope the future is Bright for the poor little town. Bring on the Cinema and other attractions.
fifikeeling 29-11-2008, 18:31 Hi I lived in a village named shireaoaks near worksop, i lived there approx 20 years. I must admit I never shopped in the town but I did have nights out there. I have to say that looking back it was totally a load of pants, if I went now I think I would look like a granny and im in my twenties, it is definatley a place to go if you are aged 13-18 and want some excitment and guarenteed to be served.
The countryside was and still is fantastic, Shireoaks is a nice quiet place and very horsey, also a great taxi firm there called shireoaks travel, excellent service.
