I swear I haven't imagined this, but has anyone else around the Hackenthorpe area heard the ice cream van playing "The Stripper"?

A few years ago I heard one playing the theme from "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" and didn't think anything could beat that, especially as it didn't translate to chimes at all well, but this new one takes the cake!

NOOOO, ainsley harriot and the crew might be knocking about doing a badly copied morcambe and wise sketch for children in need.

We used to hear that one all the time when we lived in the centre of town just off campo lane. it was just weird!

They're all a bit weird to some degree though aren't they? They could play any awful tinny jangly racket and you'd know it was an ice cream van.

There's one that does Greensleeves - why that should imply ice cream I can't think, unless Henry VIII was fond of cornets and lollies.

The one in our area play a freakin' electronic version of Nelly The Elephant. I can safely say I have never hated anyone in my entire life, but htis guy comes very, very close.

Oh for a shotgun and a sure fire aim

I think i've heard it and I don't think it's actually the stripper (although admittedly it does sound close). .

. . When I heard it, I instantly thought of the music from the credits at the end of Super Mario Land on the SNES.

It's not an ice-cream van, but there's some kind of food van that goes round the Corporation Street/Nursery Street/Wicker area every morning with an ice-cream-like chime of "Food Glorious Food".

:D

I can't really remember any tunes but there is a guy at home who uses an ice cream van as his normal car. Absolutely bombs around in it playing a techno tunes in that tinny style! This is in Wales though

The ice cream van in our area lately has the blue peter theme music as its chimes, but the good the bad and the ugly is an all time winner :D

not a weird choice at all, but our local ice cream van plays the teddy bears' picnic.

unfortunately it's rather out of tune and consequently sounds like not only would you get a big surprise, but turn up traumatised on the local news making an appeal for information to find the man in the bear costume that gave you said surprise.

never bought an ice cream off him though (the ice cream man, not the bear costume man), so they could be the best ice creams in the world for all i know.

The one that comes near us plays the theme from "Tales Of The Unexpected", it's quite disturbing. I have visions of getting to the bottom of the ice cream cone and finding a human finger or something.

The ice cream van near us sometimes plays the theme from the film "The Third Man" which my husband thinks is brilliant.:loopy:

Do you have any emories of ice cream vans from the olden days in Sheffield? Not including the man on the bike who fell off and his tooth ended up in your ice cream...

I do indeed, they involve a shaman, a snake and a milkman called Greg.

The one round my old house used to play the theme tune for Monty Python, it would make me smile every time and I would be humming it all day, such a nice man as well, with his cider lollies and 99 flakes :)

Yep I've heard it too. I work near the Novotel, we used to hear The Good, The Bad and The Ugly van every afternoon at 3pm. It used to make us giggle in the office. Ice Cream Vans are brill. I love the quirky little tunes they play. I hope they never get rid of them, they're so distinctive to British life.

I once heard an ice cream van playing Teddy Bear's Picnic slightly out of tune, it sounded extremely spooky.

Summer in the city centre just would nto be the same without the good, bad and ugly tune ringing out across the city. Never actualy seen the van though - does it actually exist or is it just a ghostly tune from nowhere!

One near us does a tune which I only know as a rude song I used to hear frequently as a child
'Hitler has only got one b***, the other is in the Albert Hall, his mother, the dirty ******, chopped it off when he was small.'
Not sure the origination of the tune but strange to me.

i think they should play

•come to daddy-aphex twin
•sound and vision-david bowie
•i am the walrus-the beatles
•Hammer time-MC hammer
•Scatmans world-scatman john
•tommorow comes today-gorillaz

i think they would sound good on an ice cream van

Come to think of it, no, nobody has seen it. I think you could be right, it is a ghost ice cream van. Pity, my Dad could have helped to man it, people have said that he resembles Lee Van Cleef around the eyes. If it is a ghost, I think we should get in touch with Derek Acorah and Yvette Fielding, let them do some investigating!!

I was wondering if any of the readers remembers Jeff Simmons? He used to be an ice cream man in the Upperthorpe area; to this day I can vividly remember his multicolored van trundling down the road chiming out a reggae infused version of the theme from Grange Hill.

Jeff and I became firm friends and had been kicking around the idea of making meat based drinks and deserts for several months. One evening he called and said that he had to talk to me, he was insistent so we met later that night. Jeff also worked as a catering assistant but had been made redundant however, he had been given a fair amount in redundancy pay and wanted to use this money to get the business up and running. So I decided to throw in my wife’s savings and join him as an equal partner.

The next couple of months were spent in a rented garage perfecting recipes for our new product line. We also worked on package designs and distribution. I remember as we walked home at night we’d fantasize about how rich and famous we’d become – it was quite a magical time for both of us.

Within three months we had a full product range (Brilliant Bovine Blancmange, Luscious Lamb Lemonade, Terrific Trout Tiramisu, Chili Cod Coffee and Pork Jelly Tartlets) all with colorful recyclable packaging that featured whimsical illustrations of Cows, Sheep and Pigs participating in various racket sports.

Jeff started selling our creations from his ice cream van, business was slow to start with but soon picked up. Production had to be moved to larger premises and within months we had a fleet of ice cream vans selling our puddings and drinks across Sheffield. Fates cruel brush on the easel of life painted an odd picture for us, and within a couple of years we were simply making management decisions and dreaming up new recipes. Jeff longed for the simple life of selling ice cream and my wife wanted her savings back, so we decided to sell the business on and return to simpler lives of quiet contemplation and reflection. I still see Jeff from time to time however we never talk about those heady entrepreneurial days in the factory, which I think is a real shame.

Carroll Reed's thriller 'The Third Man' with Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten and Trevor Howard, is rightly recognised as a classic film, and owes some of its memorable atmosphere to the haunting Harry Lime theme composed by Anton Karas and played on the zither. As he plucked away he can hardly have imagined that 50 years later that very same tune would be used to irritate me in my garden all afternoon as the chime for a ****** ice cream van.

It seems to have replaced the previous effort which was the even more irritating Happy Wanderer.

I think the one with the Good the Bad and the Ugly one was first thought of when he used to outfox the traffic wardens by parking in Paradise Square on the private parking area. They couldn't then say : Go ahead make my day!
