View Full Version : Plug - rubbish, overpriced, overrated

I've been to the plug a fair few times now, and i have to say it's the most overrated club in Sheffield. I've had to pay through the nose (cheapest entry I've had; £7), to get into a half empty cave, that looks in places like a comprehensive school.

Give me the leadmill any day.

Depends what you're after really - if you're not really ars*d about the music and just want somewhere to get p*ssed and cop off - then maybe the Leadmill is a better choice for you

Plug isnt my favourite club by any stretch of the imagination... I've only ever been on a Thursday cos its dead cheap... I'm sure its like £4 advance (Q jump) or something like that... and all the drinks are 80p... The music's alright... its just that the RnB room is a bit small :(

That's the entire point. I am ars*d about the music, which didn't seem all that different in the Plug to the leadmill. Plus the leadmill has much more of an atmosphere to it than plug.
I've never been to a club with the intention of 'getting ****** and copping off', though it appeared that the vast majority of people in the second room at Plug were after just that. And at £7 i felt like I'd been mugged on the door.

I've been to plug many many times and wouldn't have a bad word to say about. They have the best DJ's ever and dont mind paying any price to see them. Its a good crowd and a good venue.

the thing that gets me AlBal, is that's what i keep hearing, so I will go back to see if i can get one of those good nights. So far, out of about 10 trips, i've not been lucky. It's disappointing really as i'd looked forward to it opening.

Which night was it that you went to Pook?

Its a shame that you didin't enjoy it though. Its the only club other than the Fez (or the room now!) that i'll go to in town cos i think all the rest are pants!

yeah, we got there at about 1.30am, so i thought it'd be a lot busier than it was. The big room was pretty much empty, the second room was busier but with terrible music and the small room was like a waiting room at the doctors.

Oh dear! I thought it wud have been a good night on Satuday cos MYNC project were on, me and my boyf were gona go down but we went to a mates BBQ instead :-)

Next Saturday should be good, its Zane Lowe and James Worrell and its the England game too! :-)

Whatever you do, dont go on the 30th July its basslines! Ha ha!

I've been on a Thursday b4 Caprice with my girl mates, we had a top night with the cheap drinks and cheesy tunes, its not usually my sort of thing but i think a girl needs a cheesy night every now and again :-)

Pook which nights have you been to there? ie which djs/bands have you seen there? When has it been empty? I've not once seen it empty. Like Albal says - I'd pay any money to see the djs they have there - I don't see any of the same going to Leadmill!

Surely if you generally have a passion for the music, you'll pay to get in there for it? They also often have £5 before 11 - bit early I know but me and my mates have done it a few times and it soon kicks off. Where does it look like a comprehensive school? Mine didn't look like that!

Exactly the same as me funkymiss, i've been to plug many-o-times and still been on the dance floor dancing away to steve angello and d ramirez :-)

I wouldn't go in gatecrasher one, leadmill, or mingdom if it was they were the last clubs open on the earth itself (no offence to anyone but thats me!)

Zane Lowe should be excellent, i cant go though, got a par-tay to attend so if you go Pook let me know what it was like.

The gig on Saturday night ( Reverend and The Makers ) has got really positive reviews and was sold out. Most of the people there had been there since about 7.30 when the place opened
Friday was Bugz in the Attic and from what I could see everybody was having a good time.

plug sat 3 june was fantastic!! live bands on x3-Reverend and the makers were absolutley fab. Club was totally packed til 12.30 ish, we stayed til 2.30, and had a fab evening, danced all night. 1st time i'd been to plug and i thought as a live bands venue it was excellent, sound was brill, view of band was great wherever you stood, got served really quickly.I've been going to the leadmill since i was a we nipper but i'd definitely go to plug again.

Bugz were ace last Friday. It was like watching Funkadelic or something. The 7x7 room (Earth) was pretty beanie too. Saturday 24th looks like a good 'un: Broomheads Jacket, The Yell, Baseball Furies & Oxfam Glamour Models in Live, Alistair Whitehead, Tony Walker, Marc Dennis & Steve Wilson in Neutral, and O'Shay (NY Sushi), Juliun (C90) and me sen' (me) in Earth. Ooh shameless Plug.

See, I was going to post something opposite to this- I used to go to Zero every friday for Urban Gorilla but have only been in Plug a few times.

Been on a few fridays and it was pretty deserted then. It just doesn't seem to have the same atmosphere anymore.

Sorry, wasn't saying that- was saying that I went down to Plug a few times because people like Geoff Ticehurst still play there, not because it was UG.

On a few occasions not every room was open, and on one occasion all three were opened buy two of them quickly closed as no one was in them.

Pook, do you not realise what your money has to pay for. Bands/DJ’s, staff, security, cost of running the venue etc. It has to be said that the Plug is very good value for money considering the quality of artists they have on, and their prices are comparable if not better than any night up and down the country. I can't remember the last time I'd paid less than £7 to get in somewhere that has a couple of decent acts playing in one night. Do you not go out very often?

Ticehurst

was saying that I went down to Plug a few times because people like Geoff Ticehurst still play there, not because it was UG.

Hats off to you my friend you have excellent taste in DJ's.... :D

To be fair Plug was very low in numbers quite a few times when it had first opened due to there being three big rooms and just not enough people in Sheffield that wanted to come out clubbing and take a chance on a new venue. Although there has been the odd quiet Friday this year on the whole they're moving on nicely and I reckon we're building something really cool.

We're not going to reach the heady heights of Urban Gorilla in the old Zero room anytime soon as that really was something special, but I like to think that myself and Dean can slowly start to build something that can hopefully be comparable sometime in the future.

As for Plug being overpriced... I think not! £6 advance for Fridays ain't exactly wallet busting is it??

When i went to see Steve Angello and Pete Tong to name a few it was packed in the main room and everyone was dancing on the dance floor. These were on saturday nights. The little room was full too cos they had summat on like love to be. I dont think the bands attract as big of a crowd as the DJ's to be honest (except for the Arctic Monkeys!!).

I disagree. The Reverend gig last week sold out. The gig the week before ( British sea power I think ) was sold out. Gullimots was about 95% full. Kula Shaker was packed the week before that. The difference is that people go to the gigs at 7.30 so by the time bands have finished at around midnight they will have already been out for getting on for 5 hours.

Well, last nights bill included some of the biggest names in DnB, including Roni Size.

Now if you went to a gig with 4 of the biggest bands of a certain genre that you were into, chances are you wouldn't think £15 was that steep.

I think the problem some people have with venues like the plug is that they dont undertand the people they book to play cost quite a bit of cash, because they are at the top of their game.

It's not Bill the milkman doing family weddings for £40 a shot you know ;)

There's not much point paying £15 if you've never heard of the DJs playing, or even the sort of music, you'd be much better going to the Leadmill. But if you've got more than a passing interest in D&B/breakbeat - you'd realise £15 (less in adv) to see someone like Roni Size & crew is very good value indeed.

Congratulations to plug for such a sick line up Friday

The only problem I had was the heat. I had to leave at three because I'd sweated out what felt like my body weight in water and couldn't dance anymore, I felt like I was going to faint.

I know it was a hot day outside and I'm not adverse to a bit of sweaty drum and bass but it really did feel dangerously hot - i know its hard to get a balance between ventilation and sound proofing but really a few ceiling fans or an open window would have made all the difference. It was a bit **** to pay fifteen quid (a bargain for the line up I know but I am skint) for a night were I had to leave much sooner than I wanted too!

As for leadmill, love that on any week night but went there last sat (for first time on a sat) and it was crap! they had indie/rock etc in the main dance/pop/chart room and then 70s throwbacks in the indie room - whats that all about :suspect: , the whole things was backwards and it didnt work well! I simply don't understand why a lot of clubs play **** cheesy music. It never used to be like this till about 3/4 years ago. There are 100's of decent records coming out every month (whatever you're into), where do they all go? I know when trance/hard house fell on it's arse it damaged the club-scene generally and R&B is doing the same now. But the clubs arn't helping themselves. I like to be able to go down to the leadmill on a saturday and hear 3 or 4 tracks I haven't heard before not listen to bloody Bon-Jovi's Living on a Prayer for the 10 millionth time. When was the last time anyone heard any Libertines/Babyshambles in there? They are probably one of the most iconic indie/rock bands around along with others like Artic Monkeys.

Basically for dance music if I hear more than 2 tracks within an hour that have recently been in the charts, I'm ****** off. I know that sounds pretentious but chart music is for kids and people with no taste. Sure some of those records may have been alright 2 years ago without the cheesy vocal, but not today. It's just pure laziness from the clubs. the promoters and the DJs.

No point getting into a what music is better debate - but there's a very broad spectrum of psy trance about these days and its about one of the few areas of undeground trance/techno dance music thats actually doing something new at the minute...

Anyway - even if you're not keen - Planet Zogg has always mixed up the psy trance with the techno and tech-trance...

Funny you should ask that...

Planet Zogg's Sixth Birthday party is at Plug (Neutral) on Fri 22 September - more details at

www.planetzogg.co.uk

Zogg always has a bit of break from club nights over the summer - but the DJs have been pretty busy the last few weeks with gigs around the country & the next Planet Zogg event is this Friday - but its in the Czech republic (!) so maybe a bit too far to go on spec!

Anyway - even if you're not keen - Planet Zogg has always mixed up the psy trance with the techno and tech-trance...

back to the Plug debate...

Good point. The first time I went to .Zero as it was then was for Planet Zogg and although Psy Trance isn't really my cup of tea (might have been if I was ten yeasr younger!), I had a brilliant night because the atmosphere and the crowd really made the place IMO.

Plug has definitely lost some of the atmosphere that .Zero used to have because the intimacy isn't there any more. I used to go nearly every week for UG and I never had a bad night that I can remember. And also it seems to me that there are a lot more "Trendy" people in there now who aren't really there for the music. I went down there a few months back to see Laurent Garnier - an absolute legend of dance music who has been making me dance for over 15 years now. I was stomping away on the dance floor when some tarted up barbie-doll tried to push past me with a glass of wine in her hand. She accidentally spilled a bit on me as she pushed past and threw me an evil look like it was my fault. I nearly buried my head in my hands and wept at what the clubbing scene had come to after that. Would never have happened in the days when I used to go to Bedrock in Brighton regularly.

As for Plug, the live room is a good venue for live acts I have to say - it's better than the Leadmill in that respect. Saw GLC in there a few months back and it was an awesome gig. But for deep, messed-up nights of clubbing - I much prefer the old .Zero as it used to be. There just seemed to be a much better crowd.

I think the Plug is the BEST club in Sheffield!! :D :D :D

I have never not enjoyed it in there and I know quite a few of the door staff and thery are genuinely lovely people - they look out for me and my mates. One time my sis went home early to meet sum1 at home and was waiting for a lift outside on her own and this bouncer that knows her (Dean) waited with her for nearly an hour chatting and the other doormen were cool with it!!!

I love the music and you get a great mix of people in there - none of this animal behaviour like in sum other clubs

IT WILL ALWAYS BE MY CHOICE AND RECOMMENDATION TO PEOPLE

I was at Plug for Love To be on saturday.

Now I depsise funky house anyway, so I wont moan about the music, but the place wasn't exactly packed.

The other room, where a band had been on, was completely dead by midnight, and closed soon after as the dj's were literally playing to 8 or 9 people. Shame, as the stuff they were playing was pretty good.

Where did everyone go?

This is very strange as we were very busy, particularly the Love to Be room and hit capacity on Saturday ??

Earth room was rocking. There was even some impromptu barn dancing from some of the underground disko contingent. Reyt good.

Everyone must have been hiding in the chill-out area and toilet cubicles......

It really didn't seem that busy, I've been to nights at Plug before when you can barely move, and it wasn't anything like that on saturday.

Seemed busy to me at L2B on Saturday and was very busy while Bromhead's Jacket were on in the Earth Room.

L2B had a great atmosphere, lots of smiling faces, chatting to complete strangers etc etc...a very pretty blonde girl even blew me a kiss:blush:

Bromhead's Jacket were playing in Live, although the shutters between Earth and Live were open until midnight. Earth itself was reasonably well populated all night...

Of course they were in Live, stupid me...might have been a bit cramped in Earth!

Do you think this thread is some kind of sinister conspiracy theory against Plug by evil minded club owners from elsewhere in the city?

Possibly. Or maybe some people don't like paying £7 to get in a club. Still, it's better than that hulk of sh*t across the road.

Me and me mate Squeeks went to the Plug recently to see Jody Wildgoose and we were quite pleasantly surprised how reasonable it was. The only problem? There was a woman who wouldn't stop talking whilst Jody did his set, Squeeks was tempted to lamp her one but I calmed her down..Squeeks that is.

Still I don't know about the beer in there as I found the bar was always around five or six deep, and I just in the end gave up on that score. Not rubbish, wouldn't say £5 was overpriced for a gig by a home town boy and defo not overrated...that last title goes either Niche and Gatecrasher as I was once taken to both of these venues by mates and didn't enjoy it one little bit!

RANT OVER!
