So for all you employers out there I have a question.
Would you value a PhD in Mechanical Engineering more from Sheffield University, or Newcastle University? Would you be more inclined to employ one than the other?
Or does it really not matter that much?
Sheffield I'd say, but I wouldn't have thought it would make a hell of a lot of difference.
Sheffield Uni has a prestige attached to it, so id say here.
as an ex grad of sheffield - def sheff
As an aside; employers seem to prefer Hallam University to Sheffield University. Having just finished my course at Hallam, I really can't understand why this is the case.

Depends what subject, employers prefer people from Hallam's CMS dept. to SU's Computing Science department.
Well I'm engineering, and still get told I'm more employable because I'm from Hallam, but my course is more IT related than anything to do with engineering.

I know Sheffield is supposed to have a good engineering rep? Newcastle Uni is good solid university and the city is fab too (though im biased).
In terms of overall of cities and uni's I would say they are both pretty equal, im sure whichever one you go to you will have a great time.
On the other hand, if you pick Newcastle, you'd get to know a new city and move away from home. This would be good for you, adn not in a way that can be measured by employers attitudes and league tables.
Yeah, and I'd say that Newcastle Uni has a lot of prestige attached to it as well. That, and Newcastle is an amazing city to live in (almost my other home at times...)
