Savannah2 31-05-2006, 16:24 Have you done a scan for spyware ect if not download Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) and Spybot S&D (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1) both are free, and do a full system scan.
see Spwareware Data (http://www.spywaredata.com/spyware/malware/bar.dll.php) might have some useful info.
PeterPiper 31-05-2006, 18:27 you need to disable it starting upusing msconfig.
also delete your temp folder in the windows installation folder
and delete any "my web " search bar folder in drive c or program files and uninstall any search bar you have unless its a google or microsoft one, as 99% of the others are spyware
that should cure it, i've done it so many times for my customers!!
Savannah2 31-05-2006, 19:04 Once you have deselected an item in MSCONFIG, you will be starting in Selective startup mode. Working in Selective startup mode is ok If you subsequently decide to choose Normal startup again, all disabled items will be re-enabled.
I would personally reccommend use of the many free startup mangers available.

If he downloads Spybot S&D as you already recommended, & chooses "Advanced Mode" from the mode menu, there's a startup item selector in the tools section

There is, you are correct(again) i haven't used Spybot S&D for a good few months....is it still anygood?, maybe i should have a likkle look myself.
I've heard people slag it off recently for missing stuff, but that could've quite as easily been browser exploits, or not using the system protection options too, or not updating.
Personally I've got (the essential) Spybot S&D & Spywareblaster (http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10486084.html?tag=lst-0-1), & been totally clean for the 6-8 months since my last re-install...
...you are correct(again)...
Well, I may be arrogant & self-assured (hey, I'm a bloke) but at least I'm always ******* right!
It means someones been looking at naughty porn on your computer and Scotland Yard is on its way..........RUN RUN RUN!!!!!!!
Savannah2 31-05-2006, 20:21 Well, I may be arrogant & self-assured (hey, I'm a bloke)
You took the words right out of my mouth :help:
Out of curiosity i installed XP pro with SP2 and maually locked it down.
turned off MS updates and disabled the inbuilt firewall.
No antivirus installed and no software firewall, just hardware firewall
Guess what....not one problem!!
Installed the same copy again and took all the kak out ie IE, WMP, SR, MSN ect and widys is now running like a dream...and installed in less than 300MB
PS i like Spywareblaster..an excellent program. i'll have another look at Spybot
I personally dont reccommend other ppl try this with their computer
