View Full Version : Legal MP3 download sites
Hi all.
Does anyone know any sites where you can download MP3s legally for like 50p a track or whatever?
I've had no end of problems with viruses etc off Kazaa et al and I'm becoming aware of the legal dangers of using stuff like Kazaa, so I'm looking for ways of downloading MP3s legally.
I've tried some of those allegedly free MP3 download sites you see dotted round the net, but they're so full of pop ups and other crap I just can't be arsed with them really...
So, anyone know any sites?!
Napster's gone legit now. Dunno if it's any good though.
mycokemusic.com are doing an offer of 50p per track and if you have an I-pod then I-Tunes can be used very soon
qazitory 25-05-2004, 17:21 WinMX is great, but I don't think it's classed as legal! I found Kazza really crap!! Also I found that Ad-Aware deletes files from Kazza, so it doesn't run anymore. That can't be safe!
Kazaa lite's OK, I never get any trouble with viruses or spyware.
I only use it for downloading files legitimately of course...
Thought this might interest you Rich

It might be worth your clicking on the listen again link

The programme you want is Shop Talk

Same here, only problem is with the number of corrupt tracks out there, but i suppose you cant really complain when there free.
well, I think rich was after legal sites....
There are ways with kazaa and other p2p programs, of getting good stuff, and imho usenet still owns.
But that discussion is really for a different thread......
I can see problems inherent in the pay-per-download scene too, as pirates based in Russia or the far east jump on the bandwagon (they already offer "warez" type downloads, but now they'll masquarade behind a slicker-looking web-page to peddle their warez) - and the problem with these people are, do you really want to give them your credit card details????
All I'm saying is, be very careful about paying to download from an unknown source.
Up to about a month or so back I was using WinMX and it worked great.
Nowadays it's gone like Kazaa, downloads that don't work, permanently queued and all that rubbish.
Am I right in thinking that most U.S. legal sites do tracks for 99 cents, and most U.K. sites charge (or have been charging) 99 pence?
I'm not even gonna post the results of a currency conversion, mention the iPod Mini delays and then witter on about how unfair it is that the Yanks get stuff cheaper/first.....I'll be here for ages

I did find Mycokemusic.com (http://www.mycokemusic.com) earlier via Google, they offer streaming and downloads from 99p per track.
Might be worth looking into signing up on the site.
qazitory 25-05-2004, 21:28 You win free downloads on Mycokemusic.com if you buy cans of Coke. Not sure if the offer is still on though.
But is the Coke giveaway as good as the Pepsi (http://methodshop.com/mp3/articles/hackpepsi/index.stm) one?
qazitory 01-06-2004, 18:56 Yeah I have done that in the past, especially with Walkers crisps packets lol. Shop keepers look at you funny thou!

i thought winmx was legal?
i've used it for yonks with no probs.

A lot bands own sites have downloads on them. If you type the band name into Google you can often find the sites quite easily.

Not really as it is nearly the same programme as Napster was before it was closed down - so not legal. Although WinMX is harder to shut down, as it doesn't keep any records on their servers (I think that's why?).
MuteWitness 06-06-2004, 12:44 emule and edonkey are good used them for years with no problems, great for full albums at the same bit rate www.musicdonkey.org
KitBarker 09-06-2004, 09:41 http://www.allofmp3.com is a Russian download site that is legal. Because of the exchange rate you get really cheap downloads.

Is it in English though? I don't speak Russian, even though I'm always russian to somewhere or other (rushin')
KitBarker 18-06-2004, 15:14 Yes it is in English too. There is a link in the top left to change the language from Russian.

I clicked the link to translate it but the site just sort of... died... It went to a blank white screen and nothing else happened.
KitBarker 21-06-2004, 08:33 Ah, yes. There does seem to be a glitch there.
When you click the English version and the screen goes blank, it seems the page has set a cookie for your language preference but not redirected you to the right page.
Once you've clicked the English link and you're at the white page, if you go back to http://www.allofmp3.com/ the page *should* be in English.
A bit of a pain I know but the site is worth it if you're after cheap legal mp3.
ToryCynic 21-06-2004, 14:39 I used to use Alta Vista - the portal.
And just clcik mp3/music and then type in the song!
it was from another site obviously - but various ones.
Lickable 24-06-2004, 14:06 itunes is only 79p a track but still more expensive that the US, still its cheap and good!
disc0tech 01-07-2004, 19:32 I've been fed up with the legal sites for ages, they only seem to hold mainstream pop/indie. FINALLY however, someone seems to be catering for the dance subcultures here:
http://www.trackitdown.net/
As for not so legal, if you can face a rather techy interface DC++ is by far the best file sharing app out there, and isn't full of rubbish like kazaa.
Just wondered if anyone can help me on this little problem I have.
I own an IPod, have purchased tunes from the music store only to find out they are protected WMA files which cannot be converted to transfer to Ipod..so just how the hell do I get my purchased tunes across. Surely thats the whole point of Itunes music store. Am I missing something..are ALL tunes from Music Store WMA protected??
Foryourears 16-07-2004, 11:00 More independent MP3 distributors with electronic music from smaller labels:
http://foryourears.com/
Foryourears.com started 14th June 2004 and is concentrating on techno, electro, IDM, etc.
If you are looking for legal downloads you will definitely not find better or cheaper than http://www.allofmp3.com/ it works out about 5p a song & is completely legal. Also they offer most songs in a whole range of formats. It comes out top in every review it has been in, although I don't have any to hand, Google for allofmp3 and I'm sure it will pick something up.
FYI any site/p2p network etc where you aren't paying for the songs is 100% illegal, (unless it un-copyrighted material, i.e. unsigned artists wanting to promote themselves) you don't get anything for free in this world unless you are stealing!
