Just wondering what the steepest tarmac'd road in the Peak Distric is?
Have cycled up Winnats Pass and reckon this must be a contender.
Anyone know of any others?

Winatt's was the cause of many swear words chez moi, when I set myself the target of getting up it by bike.

I only ever managed it once, and I thought my heart was going to pack up about 30 yards from the top, and then I had to cycle back home to Walkley with thighs of jelly as a result, but I did it.

I haven't been anywhere in the Peak District that could instil fear into the heart of cyclists like Winatts- maybe there is somewhere and it's just hiding.

I remember whizzing down that road from the top of Shatton moor after an off road adventure up there. If I remember correctly there's a straight stretch of about 200 yards which is unbelieveably steep. I turned a corner already going far too fast and the road just dropped away from me. Might not be the steepest, but it's certainly the most scary I've ridden out there :)

I think I used to ride with the Tread lot too - it was a good few years back. Did the descent from the mast down to Hope flat out in a group and the area is aptly named!

I cycled up Winnats only last Saturday morning, yeah its steep at 20% although not all that hard of a climb with a gear ratio of 39 x 27 and a super duper light carbon bike as it only really kicks up after you go around the right hand bend at about the half way point.

Another good steep climb is Sir William Hill just outside of Grindleford, and as already said there is a killer of a climb out near Matlock.

Most the climbs out in Peak District are really just short but steep, the only ones i can think of that have any sort of distance to them are the Snake Pass, Holme Moss, Cat & Fiddle and Froggart Edge.

I love going up hills on my bike and its just a shame we dont have climbs over here that are on par with the likes the Col du Galibier in the French Alps at 43km long if ridden from the town of Bourg-D'Oisans / Col du Lautaret side or the mighty Col du Tourmalet in the French Pyrenees at 19km long.

Just done a bit of mapping and from the road junction at the bottom of Winnats to the road Junction at the top of the pass the road climbs from 664ft to 1340ft in a distance of 1.19 miles. I don't claim to be particularly acurate but these figures will give an idea of the climb involved to get legs or wheels up Winnats.

Last week we (Mrs Grinder and I) walked up Winnats and the wind was so strong we could barely stand, didn't see any other walkers or cyclists attempting it that day.

Any other roads I can take a look at?
