Could anyone tell me why sheffield has two prof teams?
What makes a fan support w/day rather than united?
Is it cos Dad did, Post code, class etc?

No turning this thread into a war of words

He started supporting wedneday because his friends did and we live at hillsborough, I lived in hillsborough all my life but still support united!

As Frank Skinner once said, there's only one criteria to use when deciding which football team to supprt: get a map and a ruler, and measure the distance from your place of birth to the nearest football ground.

I lived close to the "Lane" as a child and my Dad supported United. The kicker however was that Jimmy Hagan played for them at that time.

all my family for generations have been Wednesday, so me too. I'm glad I didn't stray to the dark side. Years gone by I think it used to be more or less which you were born nearest to. There is still evidence of this, the north is mainly Owls and the south Blades. :)

As my mate Eddie whos 84 and a season ticket holder at the lane said His wife (shes dead )said to him once you love Sheffield United more than me to which he replied Sheffield United I love Sheffield Bleeding Wednesday more than i love thee. I think that sums it up

Listen it can get worse, my dad took me along to sheff U as a kid and I've been a lifelong fan, even a ball boy for them for a time but never good enough to play.
This is it, my sister supports Man U :-(

Family for me, lived closer to millmoor as a kid but never even considered supporting them as i was blue and white for as long as i remember.
We have two teams because sheffield is a big city, look most other big cities (apart from Leeds and maybe Newcastle) they have two or more teams.

i wanted to support a decent team so became an Owl.
actually i was taken to see wednesday @ a young age, worked in that neck of the woods for years, through the really bad second divison years.
daughter devleoped into an Owl supporter as well.

all the rest of family are blades & i mean everyone, sorry except the aunt who took me to my first match @ hillsborough.

if i remember correctly - wednesday were made up of shopkeepers etc who could only play on a wednesday . they couldnt therefore play for the dark side.

allegedly.
there is some dispute as to the introduction of the blades,it was alleged it was related to the cutlery, little mesters & even the hamlet (scythes etc)

i was born in Hillsborough, all my family are Wednesdayites and I'm used to the finer things in life. The hole in the road was my city boundary and if i had to go beyond it it didn't feel like Sheffield to me.
The reason there is 2 clubs is because Wednesday need a reserve side.

alevans
26-05-2006, 17:33
So the reserve side is playing in the premiership next year, and the first team just scraped survival in the championship for one more season?

I know that Sheffield United was formed as a way to get money into Bramall Lane as the crowds from the cricket season alone weren't enough to pay the bills. They therefore needed a winter sport to keep money coming in throughout the year and football was chosen.

Not bragging m8 , But we did earn the right to be in the Premiership when we finished 2nd after 46 games and didnt lots of teams sing to the Blades fans " PREMIERSHIP YOUR HAVING A LAUGH" ? Thats why i have that signature ;)

Well I'm a Blade probably because my dad is, and his dad before him. My grandparents on my mum's side are Wednesday as they used to live at that end when they were growing up.

But my first ever match was United and, living in the southern half of the city, I'm closest to the Lane, so they're the factors as to why I am a Blade, I reckon anyway.

No turning this thread into a war of words

In answer to your first question both teams started as armature clubs and were formed to keep the Cricket Clubs together in winter and also provide a source of extra income. When the cricket and football clubs split professionalism was inevitable. Under the Sheffield and Hallamshire rules professionalism was not allowed.

However many players were rebelling and threatened to form their own club called Sheffield Rovers in fact many had already played for a club called the Zulus who were raising money for soldiers and their families injured in the Zulu wars (things don't change much do they?)

This threat of starting a separate professional club forced Wednesday to turn professional in April 1887. United weren't formed until 1889 so I imagine they employed professionals at their formation.

Wiki quote:
"The creep of professionalism began in 1876 when Wednesday brought down James Lang from Glasgow. He was officially hired by the club but received a job with no formal duties from one of the members of the club board. The association subsequently had to deal with open professionalism when members of The Zulus received payment for matches. A number of players were banned, so many in fact that it led to the abandonment of the 1882 Sheffield Challenge Cup final. In 1885, professionalism was made legal but the Sheffield Association, led by Charles Clegg and William Pierce-Dix remained firm opponents of professionalism in football."

In answer to your last question in the 50s and 60s I believe there was less rivalry between supporters for instance my dad and his mates as well as thousands of others used to go to both grounds on alternative Saturdays (those who are still living do).

The bitter rivalry which is portrayed and cultivated by the media is a poor stab at making Sheffield seem like Glasgow Ranger and Celtic which is divided along religious grounds and not football.

I believe that the rivalry which the media is trying to stir up doesn't help either club, I'm not saying that there shouldn't be rivalry but when it becomes a bitter hatred then it tarnishes the proud history of Sheffield Football.

Reasons why i became a Wednesday fan is the first memory of my dad going to Wembley for the 1966 F.A. Cup final i would be about 6 and thought they must be a good side to play at Wembley so i became a fan, first game F.A. Cup v Plymouth we won 3-0 in 1968ish. Had a season ticket for the last 15 years and before that on and off

As someone has said Sheffield is big enough to have two teams with good support

As my dad's not from up here, and I had no allegiance, I wasn't bothered about either Sheffield team in the 70s and early 80s, as, let's face it, they were pretty rubbish!

My best mate is a blade, and we went to see the England under 21s against Turkey around '87 at the lane... at the time, United were still pretty rubbish, but Owls were up there in the top flight, and all of the Owls fans at school were just so up themselves, you'd think they were Man United the way they went on! The blades fans there I knew just seemed more realistic and down to earth...

So I sided with the underdogs at the time, United... and started going regularly just in time for the start of Dave Bassett's era, and never looked back since! Since then, I converted my folks to the blades, and we're all long term season ticket holders now :)

my old man never really bothered following either side. by all accounts he was a pretty decent player. captain of the R A F side he was in during national service. then captain of several local pub sides in sheffield including one derek dooley played in before he made it big. i started following united when i was 10 and a pupil of burngreave school back in 1970. we used to play football at play time united v wendy. it used to be about 40 v 4 in uniteds favour so half of us had to play for wendy to even it out.

saturday home games we all used to meet at the abc cinema in the morning for the minors club then straight to the lane pretending we were all flash gordon as we walked down the moor towards the ground. used to get in ground at 1.00 to take our place on the kop ready to greet currie and the boys. back in those days it was very rare we came out disapointed. even when we lost we'd be talking about something currie had done. great great days.

Pathebaldelde posted (in reference to 'My old man......etc.') 'all the blades on here will know the song'.

My response was that every team knows that song as everyone has adopted it for their team. It isn't unique to the blunts, they didn't invent it and you don't have to be a blunt to understand it.

Or are you claiming it is only a blunts song?

You can have the 'Greasy chip on our shoulders song'.

And the songs you sing in your car park when you protest.

Oh, and you can have Brian 'moss chops' Blunt's droaning rambles on Praise or Grumble.

But that's all.

Right.

I get you.

It's a 4 line song where all lines rhyme.

So:

And that is Hillsborough Kop
Where it is magnifique
where all the unitedites
lay dead at our feet

I see what you mean, lines 1 and 3 don't rhyme with 2 and 4.

It should be:

And that is Shoreham Street
where it is magnifique
where all the Wednesdayites
lay dead at our feet

Because now all the lines rhyme.

What? Line 3 doesn't rhyme? That can't be true!?! That just makes a mockery of you!

You must remember when you beat us on Boxing day and because you did you sang
'We will fight forevermore because of boxing day'
Thats rather relevant to us getting beat we thought,
so we nicked that one as well.

There is a downside to pinching Wednesday songs though
and it can back-fire on you.
I once started singing that der-der-der-der (that go's on for half an hour) song
with Wens-dee at the end on the kop at the Lane. I changed the Wens-dee bit to United
but somebody embeded an hatchet in my head, i never sang that song again i can tell you.

I don't know what it's origins are.

What I do know is that (to my knowledge) you don't hear that song at Hillsborough anymore.

We've moved on a bit. We're passed Magnet and snuff etc.

Why would i lie?
If you want to talk about songs and not car parks and praise and grumble I'll happily rabbit all day.
Come on then tell me an original Wednesday song thats any good?

If you wish to discuss the origins of football songs, can you please open a thread and do so rather than taking this off topic.

THANKS

My apologies if it sounded abrupt.

The original posting were about why Sheffield has two professional teams... for me that doesn't go on to who invented songs - or perhaps I'm being naive.....?

Anyways, by all means start a thread about songs.
