View Full Version : Any interesting info about Norfolk Park and Arbourthorne
cosywolf 21-05-2004, 15:54 I'm working on a website about Norfolk Park and Arbourthorne, and I'm looking for any and all interesting information about them - historical, whimsical, new, old, any material any of you have.
Photos are good, and reminiscences of life on both estates. If you've got anything, PM me, put it here for other interested parties, whatever...but do let me know if you want the info to go onto the site with your name on.
If you want to see the site (bearing in mind that it's currently under construction), just pop into here (http://www.ournorfolkpark.co.uk) and have a nosy around.
Thanks in advance, and enjoy!

Hi... I remember playing in Norfork park and seeing the new homes going up...I think it was a flagship for Sheffield at the time but drugs and bad folk sent that the way of the wind. regarding the other place my mum and dad used to clean windows on it around the same time.
superCol 22-05-2004, 20:37 This is interesting - not.
Why did they put Jesus on the 'Cross?
'Cos the're wuz no room on th' Arbourthorne.
Old joke but it deserves better.

toptourist 24-11-2006, 13:49 Did they used to have prefabs on the Arbourthorne , it rings a bell and I think it might be where my aunt lived pre 1960. I recall going to her prefab a rounded sort of house and it had a ledge around it which we used to climb along competing with each other not to fall off. Am I correct in that belief or not ?????

There were prefabs all around the Arbourthorne pub,on East Bank Road,Eastern Avenue etc
I used to live in the prefabs ( with my parents and brother) at Errington Rd and Eastbank Road . My Grandparents also lived in the area on Errington Cres. . Long time ago but I still remember it fairly well

I don't know how far back you want to go, but Harrison's Survey of the lands of the Manor of Sheffield in 1637 mentions a piece of land within the deer park called Arbor Thorne Hurst, hurst being a piece of land near a copse. The same passage also refers to nearby Wy Broomwell (Wybournwell), and Hill Topp.(PM me if you'd like a transcript of the entries!)

I clicked on your 'here' sign and it came up as an advert for Lovefilms DVd's.
Is this intentional or are you serious about wanting info about Norfolk Park?

Think there might still be a few down Eastern Avenue opposite the playing fields, don't quote me though

nope the prefabs were flattened, pretty much en-masse round the time of the gales in 1962. My great-grandparents lived in one of the Arbourthorne prefabs, and my aunt lived in one on Intake (hollybank I think)
The errington road/ eastern avenue area, where the prefabs were, was built-over with finnegan houses, and vic hallam houses in the mid/late 60s. (I have heard they are now scheduled for demolition, too... not bad, I suppose; a 40-yr lifespan for properties designed to last 10/15 yrs, max))
There aren't many prefabs left in sheffield, except up stannington, and, IIRC chapeltown/high-green.

Thats probably the ones I'm thinking of, thanks PT
Used to go to Hurlfield and there was always a running battle between us and Norfolk School.
