Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong place.

I am looking for a really good chinese restaurant in Sheffield. My boyfriend wants to take me out for a chinese tonight and has told me to book a table. Problem is, I have never been for a chinese before (I know, I've led a sheltered life  ) so I am hoping someone here can give me a recommendation. Please!

Go to the Vietnamese Noodle Bar on London Rd
Not strictly a chinese but it sells oriental food

Its cheap, you can bring your own wine/beer, you can spend anything from £3.50 for a noodle dish to £15 for a set meal.

Failing that go to Candy Town at bottom of London rd and get a set meal.
I always find that it is easier to do this as you get a mixed selection of dishes.

Have a good un

Not a chinese but...

Bahn Nah in Broomhill is the best Thai restaurant I've ever been to. Get the set meal for two and prepare for a taste sensation! I'd recommend booking early today though.

Candytown at the botom of London Road is EXCELLENT!
Golden Dragon (just off the Moor shopping precinct) VERY VERY GOOD
Oriental Buffet nr Fitzalan Square (Opposite Ponds Forge) is said to be amazing and good value.
Don't use TOP WOK just off the moor as I found the service below standard.

Da Bouncer - are you REALLY a bouncer?

If so, whereabouts have you worked/do you work? I'm sure I'll know you to see you, considering the number of places around toon that I've worked.

Yes I am a bouncer. I've worked all over really. Casbah, Walkabout, Takapuna, Republic, Bed etc etc.
I also have a day job too.

Just got through to Candy Town, they are closed for a refurb.

So would you say golden dragon is next best place?

Boyfriend has been to Top Wok before and said it was ok but It doesn't seem to have good reviews.

I just hate it when you go out for a meal, pay loads and it's pants.

Golden Dragon is very nice (not quite candy town though), I always go to Golden Dragon whenever I can't get seated at Candy Town. I am going to try the Oriental Buffet soon tho cos it's had some amazing reviews from mates of mine!

Have a good night!

I'd recommend Zing Vaa (on the Moor) although some people say they don't like it. There's supposed to be a good new one on London Rd that a mate's been to - but I can't remember the name - sorry!

Failing that, Canton Orchard on Fulwood Rd is good, but quite expensive.

(I'm getting hungry now... :? )

Top Wok used to be OK, but it's changed hands a couple of times recently and it's now called something else. Apparently this has meant the standards have dropped (even more  ) but I haven't been (and don't think I will be going) to decide for myself.

Let me know what it's like - I work just round the corner from there so it might be a useful lunchtime / teatime "venue" :)

The banners look a bit dodgy, but you can't judge a restaurant by its banners.

If you don't want to pay a fortune go to Vietnamese noodle bar.
The number of chinese and customers in general tells a story.

We went to the Vietnamese Noodle Bar the other week after hearing how good it was and were only met by dissapointment!

The service was very poor, the young guy who served us was very rude and never smiled and at one point even took my girlfriends meal before she had finished eating it! (she still had the chopsticks working around the chicken!). We have spoken to friends about this guy and aparantly he' like this often, so if you do go and this guy server you, swap tables to get someone else.

The food was nice, but avoid the squid dish, this gave me major upset stomach!

Overall, an average place to eat but avoid the moody kid and squid!

We went yesterday with some Taiwanese friends. The place is a lot better than the banners! (I found those very tacky too - they should replace them with something better). Difficult to judge the place as I've not been to any similar buffet type places - I thought it was good value and served tasty food. I'd be interested to see if they vary the selection - there's plenty to choose from but it would be even better if they added new dishes on a regular basis, especially as there didn't seem to be much to satisfy people with a taste for spicy foods (I thought there might by something like thai curry for example). Also, the fruit they had seemed to be just tinned fruit, which seemed a shame. I don't know if they have anything different in the evenings (there's different prices for different times of day - weekday lunchtimes are cheapest).

We decided to give golden dragon a miss and went to this new Oriental buffet place instead.

The food was delicious. Lots to choose from and all very hot and fresh.

Service was really good. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and also very quick!

It isn't the kind of place to go if you are a couple looking for a romantic evening. It is better suited to groups of friends I think.

The Zing Vaa on the Moor is fantastic, the vegetarian set meal was really good. I actually found it by mistake (a friend booked it by mistake, she meant to book the Golden Dragon!).

Hi there

Does anyone know if the No1 Oriental banquet place (the one opposite Pond's Forge) is any good for vegetarians?

There is another Chinese restaurant "Lotus House" aorund Woodhouse Village. The food is quite traditonal and good; the service is excellent. Worth a try.

No1 Oriental

It's pretty useless for veggies. Went there a couple of months ago with a load of mates, the couple of veggies among us were distinctly underwhelmed by the choice. Bit of an oversite I think. I'm not veggy but I do wonder why places cut down a large proportion of their potential market by not offering a decent veg selection. Not like it's difficult.

I couldn't fault it for meaty stuff tho - top quality grub and extremely keen waiters.

I noticed the other day that there's a new chinese buffet opening. It's near chapel walk, I think the building used to be the Halifax bank if I remember rightly.

It's called Jumbo, so that'll be my next place to try, I should really become a food tester, what a fantastic job that would be :)

Keen isn't in it. Felt like a prison of war camp.
As soon as I'd finished the last noodle on my plate they were all over it like a fat kid on a smartie.
Bulletts have left guns slower than the time it took them to take my plate.

Food is pretty much OK, not brilliant... but OK (not crap).
Value during the week lunchtimes is amazing, so much choice for only £5.50. Spot on!

Although the decor is more like a school lunch hall than a restaurante (take a tip from Pizza hut people... it's could work in your favour); for weekday lunch times.... excellent!

We went to Golden dragon. It was really nice. I went to Top Wok in Jan and thought that was better but did not fancy going there now due to the new name and look, it looks really tacky now.

I went to this new establishment behind the Crucible Theatre last week and it got me wondering which of these places was the bes-tist? Cos theres No1 Oriental Buffet near Ponds Forge, one on the Moor and possibly loads of others what with this seemingly latest fad!

I went on a midweek night and the 3 course buffet cost £8.99 plus drinks. It was nice to get away from all the Xmas kak. The place was decorated in minimal post-Ikea furniture, but the bright lights on the lilac walls and the over zellous air con where I was sat made me feel dizzy. The ladies loos were like a sauna in comparison! (massive function room/overspill upstairs too).

Definately a taste sensation on my plate as I chose to try a variety of dishes (thats the point of a good spread for me). Attentive staff too and the free top-up of my pot of chinese tea was much appreciated. They also served alcohol - Tiger beer etc.

There were several afterworkdoo-pub groups and couples in but I think it will attract more theatre goers and families in the new year.

Guess I'll have to try the other ones now to compare! Oh the torment!
