View Full Version : The first thing you'd do if you won a million?
Everybody has a dream of winning the lottery or making millions some way or another. In reality, what would be the first thing you'd spend some dosh on?
Personally, I'd buy a ferrari f40 and go into work. I'd sit at the desk and do absolutely nothing, ignoring the manager and accidently on purpose spilling tea on the computer LOL! just being a git really.
I would then toddle off to Meadowhall and buy a football which i'd take into House of Fraser ( upstairs ) the crystalware dept . . . and have a REYT OLD KICK-A-ROUND!
Work would be first on the list to feel my wrath by going in being a complete t**t then throw my uniform onto the managers desk coverd in some horse muck from the farm across the road from me, then I would buy two houses one mansion here and a nice summer house somewhere hot and far away!
Jump in the air and click my heels together :D
Sam Miguel 20-05-2004, 20:44 Nothing. I wouldn't be able to move.
Then I would collapse with fear. I couldn't handle it. £200, 000, yes, but all that money, no thanks.
id quit my tacky part-time job, but id saty on at college, cos i enjoy it!!
id but my family a big mansion, n 1 for me n my mates!
id buy loadz o hollidays, n everything i always wanted. but i would save some, n not blow it all!
most...but not all!! hehe
give family n true friends some! not distant ppl! :)
pay off my mortgage, book a long holiday, and arrange for someone to oversee renovations to my house to be done for when I came back from said holiday.
Pay off Mum and Dad's mortgage definitely, then give a sizeable donation to the charity who provide my support workers, after that, buy Dad a large set of Dog kennels complete with Dogs (show quality flatcoated retrievers) living in them, and a bevvy of beautiful single Kennel maids for me to *ahem* "play with" ;)
With the leftovers from that lot, I'd chuck a sizeable chunk in the coffers at the bank, get rich off the interest... Finally I'd give some money to my Brother and his Girlfriend, so that they can afford a better place for themselves instead of a ground floor flat in South London.
Phanerothyme 20-05-2004, 21:20 When I Win The Lottery
I'm going to give half my money to the city
so they have to name
a school or a park or a church
after me
bulldog D 20-05-2004, 21:27 If it was only a million it then it would take care of a Holiday home on the west coast of Ireland, a vehicle to transport us there(nothing to showy, as I hate people who flaunt wealth), a bit of DIY around the home and a trolley dash 'round the B&O shop.
i'd definately buy a pint!
Martin_s 20-05-2004, 23:33 Call a solicitor and figure out how to pay off a few true friends and families debts without them finding out who or how...
Course, I'd make them pay to get the drinks in or they'd suspect something ;)

What a nice man you are !!
still keep writing the begging letters.....but would now put stamps on them .......
mr.blaze 21-05-2004, 08:45 I'd go straight to the air port and fly away as far as possible.
Agent Orange 21-05-2004, 09:05 Quit work and go backpacking around the world after giving a huge chunk of it to charity and my family.
bulldog, after a trolley dash around the B.O. shop would you then go to the nearest perfume shop? LOL! sorry, couldn't resist!
give some away to my family and friends.
buy a couple of houses (one here, one somewhere sunny, maybe a third near some snowboarding territory).
Buy a couple of cars.
Buy a new wardrobe of clothes.
Take everyone on a holiday to the new house.
Invest the rest and live of the interest for the rest of my life.
Work would be quit implicitly (i have no particular dislike of it, so i wouldn't go and be a tit or anything)
I would announce to the world that I am gonna do the double or quits thing ... red or black ... on a roulette table ... and that if I win ... I am gonna give the whole 2 million to a random drunk on the street and in some kind of bum to multi-millionaire reality TV show.
Hello Mr Aston Martin dealer chap, could I have a look at that rather nice DB9 please?
Sam Miguel 21-05-2004, 16:32 I suppose, thinking about it, I could come to terms with it.
I would have chauffer pick me up at work as a bit of a treat when I worked overtime.
magicgem 21-05-2004, 17:18 Have a heart attack
whilst calling up a travel agents to book a holiday somewhere hot/relaxing/classy (as I can afford it) for everyone I know
I think I would try to 'buy' Brad Pitt, especially after seeig him in Troy today.
I'm sure Jennifer Aniston would consider my hubby a fair swap!
I'd buy a small isolated smallholding to bring up my family and rescue animals...
id spend a month in cuba ...followed by a trip into for the real world for certain forum members who rely on google quotes etc should be fun lol:loopy: :loopy: :loopy: :loopy: :loopy: :loopy: :loopy: :loopy:
in a world full of greed and people who want everything for nothing and then some. people who then want their money back when it breaks down. Enterprise... One to beam up.

I'd buy a million £1 lottery tickets. Who knows, I might win!!
Mosherchik 22-05-2004, 15:42 Really dull but would first pay off any money owed... hate being in debt
Would have to buy a mini convertable, ok so not exactly up there in the ferrari league but I like em
probably blow most of it on stuff I dont really need, then stuff the rest under the mattress.
Id probably attempt to keep it hush hush cos loadsa money brings loadsa trouble and gold-diggers
Right, ive been thinking about this one..
I'd Give all of my close friends £20,000 to pay off any Uni debts (and only for uni debts..) I'd give one of my friends (who wants to be a geneticist £50,000 to pay for her debts and future research etc.)
I'd buy myself a DeLorean, and a Smart Roadster
Buy some shares in google (not too many tho!) and then just live comfortably on the interest from the remaining money!
I would take over First Mainline, and give them instructions in proper customer service technique, and arrange more than the paltry 4 83 buses which serve the whole of upper Malin Bridge and Stannington, in fact I would arrange an increased bus service to Stannington, not just the current unreliable 82 and 83 routes.
Wake up then go back to sleep.

Hehe, very much so! But one thing. Dont buy it from Leeds ;)
Actually ... I changed my mind ...
jackthedog 26-05-2004, 07:46 Mr Wheeler, I don't suppose you would consider producing just one more Speed 12 would you?
mimicraze 26-05-2004, 09:08 by me and my boyf a lovely TVR, pay of my debts etc, and my boyfs, my rents mortgages etc, get myself a full set of custom personailed saxes ,and claris (geek!!) ,and anything my boyf wanted. id also go lingerie shopping!!!!!!! to celebrate :), with a personal shopper and champagne :D

Nice one Lestat,
very droll but very apt, the very thought of all that activity would obviously cause one to perspire so inducing a possible chance of bodily odour. I would therefore get them to bring the contents of the Bang & Olufsen shop to me, at my house. where I could peruse the products while sipping Guinness from Waterford crystal buckets.
Take all the 'carers' that I know out for a slap up meal every week until my money ran out. They are the unsung heroes. the people who save the government millions of pounds and get sod all in recognition for it.
1Man&hisBMW 31-05-2004, 00:45 £1m - how about just banking it and chilling off the monthly :D
Sadly can't do that, not allowed
So instead, I would move to California and deal in real estate. BMW would be the only motor though - X5 Le Mans and an M3.
BongMonster 13-06-2004, 20:15 I think id probably cry
Book into Thorbury Hospital to sort out my prolapsed colon. As I am sure that I would have one after discovering I had won the lottery.
After that, buy a business (just to keep me going), buy a few properties in different countries and spend my time traveling the world.
Clear the debts and buy somewhere in the country that can accomodate a few more cats and possibly kids....
Do something nice for my inlaws and my neice.
Invest in a 'sensible' car, a Landrover (for the country pile) and a very unsensible car.
Buy a little 'city' flat.
But before all this go and show the bank manager my cheque (or million in cash) and tell them that they can shove the whole lot where the sun doesn't shine, figuratively speaking. And when their 'personal banker' rings me, allow them to sell me all sorts of financial services....
Then keep 'em waiting.....
Then when they've got to the stage of mentally spending their comission....
Don't sign the papers!
Revenge is a dish best served cold, especially to bankers!
hotbombshell 14-06-2004, 13:22 Plastic surgery! I'd have my stomach done!
Then quit job and go away on a cruise with my family and friends!
noseyrosie 14-06-2004, 16:39 Tempted to say I'd buy a heeuuuuge house in the very posh bits of South-West Sheffield.
I'd get one of those really really big beastly tents with space for about 20 people.
I'd get myself some driving lessons and an ecologically sound car :D.
And I'd give lots of money to AIDs charities, and erm....something else worthwhile.
I'd buy my mum and dad a bigger house each.
And a £1500 fully keyed Irish flute made from silver and a non-African blackwood wood (mine's made out of that now and I'm so ashamed for my non-environmentally friendlyness).
In my big posh villa house castle doobry I'd have a ferret sanctuary (partially cos I like them, partially to **** off the posh neighbours ;))
And have many many many parties.
I have so gone over budget!
have some victory sign fingers made ,so i can send them back with begging letters:D
I'd think about how to make a billion
Im not sure.........
Start going crazy and buy things i want :D
stackmonkey 24-10-2007, 21:01 1st thing I would do once the cheque has cleared?
Go on holiday somewhere out of the way, to let the news sink in
MonkeyLover 24-10-2007, 21:02 The first thing i would do is give some to my daughter so she could afford a house and move out from under my feet!
Then I would give the same amount to my son and his girlfriend so they could pay off their mortgage.
I would then look for a new house for me and hubby, furnish it, and sell the old house.
Then I would buy a new car for me, one for my daughter, and one for my son.
Somewhere along the line, I would give some to charity and treat all my friends.
We can only dream!
Burton's shopping spree but not the local Burton's, they might think it was an odd change that the guy who buys the 3 for £12 t-shirt deals is now getting 45 quid coats.
The first thing I would have to do is buy 2 houses, next door to each other, one for me and ma-in-law and one for the current neighbours.
It's what we've always said we'd do, whoever won the lottery first would buy two houses, so we could stay neighbours. You can buy a good house, but you can't buy good neighbours.
I'd buy myself a sooper-dooper, swizzy wizzy PC that did absolutely everything (not that I need a top of the range, for the pithering about I do!).
Buy my baby brother and family a house, send a good load to my elder brother to help him support his numerous daughters, donate a dollop to cat charities, put what's left (if anything!) in the bank.
Rotherhamer 24-10-2007, 23:40 Read Mikey Carrols autobiography"Careful what you wish for",it may just change your outlook if you ever did win the big one
I'd buy a ferrari f40 and go into work
pffft an f40? That's soooo 2004. :hihi:
i'd not tell anyone, go to work as normal, not claim the win for a month or so until the fuss has died down. get a solicitor to set up a trust fund and bung the cash in their. quietly pay off outstandind debts then retire
Pay off all my bills - then book a month long holiday!
dnairn8417 25-11-2007, 23:15 I would go into HSBC, pay off my overdraft and tell them I'm closing my account as I wont' be banking my winnings with them!!
I think the first thing I'd do is to to buy some new windows for the house, and hire someone to sort out all of the little jobs that I've been putting off because I can't afford them at the moment, like getting some new guttering for the back of the house.
Then I'd get a car on which everything works and which is an estate car with a space for the dog in the back so that I'm not permanently cleaning dog hair off the seats.
Then I think I'd finally replace the horrible fireplace with the chipped tiles that I've hated ever since I moved in here nearly 16 years ago!
AJ sheffield 25-11-2007, 23:35 Then I think I'd finally replace the horrible fireplace with the chipped tiles that I've hated ever since I moved in here nearly 16 years ago!
Good choice, but would you still put all those candles on the new one.
fabulous_girl 26-11-2007, 07:43 free myself of the student loan, and buy a house outright! then book a looong holiday, if work complained about me taking too much leave, i'd just pay them off!
CockneyMafia 26-11-2007, 08:21 Throw a huge all-expenses-paid party on a boat on the Thames for anyone who fancied it, and then take my best mates on a 3 week holiday to South America.
Classic Rock 26-11-2007, 08:24 Book a huge major holiday! I'm ready for one!
CockneyMafia 26-11-2007, 08:34 Read Mikey Carrols autobiography"Careful what you wish for",it may just change your outlook if you ever did win the big one
This pre-supposes you have all of Mikey Carrol's 'qualities' before you won the money though.
Beakerzoid 26-11-2007, 08:46 The first spend for me would be a better house for my parents to live in.
The second would be a memorial stone for my daughter.
The third would be to pay off my, my wifes, and my best firends debts.
After that I would focus on myself a bit more (big house, etc)
One million isn't really that much these days. One certainly couldn't retire with a lavish lifestyle. Given that a quite modest house costs 250k in a lot of areas, then you are left with 750k. Say you get a (very optimistic) rate of return of 10% a year on your capital, but inflation runs at, say, 3% (again optimistic), you would have a pre-tax real-terms income of 52,500. Which is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but far from allowing a "millionaire lifestyle".
happylady 26-11-2007, 10:18 Pay off my mortgage, put some money to one side for my kids. Book a nice holiday and treat my family
BasilRathbon 26-11-2007, 10:23 As I don't really need the money, I'd give each of the forum's 47,450 members £21.07.
As I don't really need the money, I'd give each of the forum's 47,450 members £21.07.
I wouldn't bother half of us would only blow it all on fags and booze for the kids
fabulous_girl 26-11-2007, 10:32 As I don't really need the money, I'd give each of the forum's 47,450 members £21.07.
excellent, you can pay it straight into my credit card account....the number is.....oh, that was a joke? damnit!
whitewitch 26-11-2007, 12:31 i would buy my parents the bungalow by the sea that they have wanted for the past few years, then i would give some money to my brothers and sister so they can pay off their morgage, set up trust funds for neice and nephews, put a wopping large amount into an account for my daughter, then with whats left i would buy myself a nice house, a villa somewhere warm, then put the rest into the bank to fester for a few years:) oh, its good to dream
blondie-blue 26-11-2007, 12:44 Pay off my parents mortgage and any other debts they had... :)
I would move abroad and live in the sunshine for the rest of my days
As I don't really need the money, I'd give each of the forum's 47,450 members £21.07.
Aaaaah - that's so sweet!
I've planned what to do with mine already - I'll invest £21 and live off the interest, and squander the 7p on a luxury holiday for me and all my friends :hihi:
NEKRO138 26-11-2007, 23:20 I'd buy a big house with a library and a pool. And a new car, but not a flashy one. Wouldn't get much change I don' think. But I'd be very happy.
