My Grandad used to have a stall on the outdoor market selling bric a brac and antiques. I have fond memories of the time I used to spend there on a monday, it had a brilliant atmosphere and was always busy, there used to be a little cafe around the corner and there was a clothes shop just down the stairs at the bottom of the market- can't remember the name of the cafe now but I had a lot of bacon sandwiches from there. It was the end of an era when they closed that part of the market down because some of the people that used to have stalls there just never bothered to get the new pitches and packed it all in which was sad because they were all like family, some had stood the markets for 20-30 years. Does anyone else have fond memories of the markets? Did you have a stall there? What do you remember about it? Also what was the name of that cafe?

Hi Taylor, I don't know if it was the proper name but I'm sure it was Jim's cafe. That was the name of the bloke that owned it. I had several bacon sandwiches from there aswell. My auntie & uncle had a stall on there selling material at first then they moved on to bits of allsorts, material still but clothes and other things. Once you got onto the main market their's was the first stall on your left just opposite where the steps started. They were Elaine & Barry Greenall. My uncles dad had the stall for years and years before he handed it over to my uncle. I used to help out there on Saturdays and me and my gran used to run it when they went away. Going to the cafe was the highlight of the day because it gave me something to do and it was freezing all the time. I remember a bloke who used to sell car seat covers but then started selling clothing. I also remember the shoe markets on a Friday, I think I used to get up about 4am to go. My aunt & uncle now have a furniture stall on the moor market. Great thread

Ahh, I remember the material stall, I have probablly spoken to you at some point or other then:) My grandads stall was right in the middle of the market, he sold antiques and the jewellers had the stall next to him and they were called Pauline and Tony, they are still selling jewellery today, you often see them at doncaster car boot and Barnsley market.
I really miss those days, you're right though, it was freezing most of the time and if it was really bad weather you could guarantee we would spend more on sandwiches and drinks than we could take in a day ha Ha:D

I remember Ernest, how is he? The last I heard was he had migrated to somewhere near Boston. The Cafe you mentioned was run by Rowland who I remember used to come round to take our orders and then deliver delicious bacon, sausage, egg and tomato sandwiches. I can taste them now!! Brilliant days, getting up at 5.30, arriving about 6.00, unloading, bitter in Winter but always optimistic of having a good day. I think we had the best days on the market and I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

I used to pester my mum when I was a little girl to let me sit on those scales. She told me that anyone who sat on them was sent to the moon!!!! I never did get to sit on them.

The scales were outside the old Rag and Tag. We are talking about the Settes Market at the bottom of Exchange Street.
