View Full Version : Magic loop socks
Lucy-Lastic 23-05-2006, 15:54 Aaaargh this 15 character title post thing is annoying:(
Well I got the fiber trends booklet and it looks quite easy - think I will give it a go on the Elfines - please dont remind me of this post when I start swearing about it:D It covers both cuff down and toe up options.

I'm going to order that booklet too and give it a go. I think I've just about mastered the DPN method (with the exception of that funny short-row heel, which I've yet to attempt), so I think I'll try the toe-up method with the Magic Loop.
I will let you go first though, Lisa... :D .
EDIT: Don't forget; the title for your next thread should be: 'LisaH's Guide to Knitting Socks Using the Magic Loop Method'. Lots of pictures, please :D ;) .

Oops, forgot about that. Alright, you can post. But one of your future thread titles should be 'LisaH's Guide...' ;) .
Lucy-Lastic 23-05-2006, 17:24 OK but can I practice first - maybe Turra21 could do it - she has ordered her ll and circulars and has so much more knitting time than me:bigsmile:

Thanks for the offer but I must gracefully decline .......
Just had the mail, and the Addi bamboo circular needle has arrived and boo hoo it's broken. And it's my day off and could have played most of the day:cry:
Well will have to finish my last sleeve of noro instead.
Lucy-Lastic 24-05-2006, 09:14 I might have a go at making a 'tube' in the left over socka with the magic loop to check I can work with the technique before using it on the Elfines. The Elfine pattern suggested a 60cm circular, but the magic loop booklet suggests nothing under 80cm so I need to see whether its going to work with what I have:?

Oh no! Where did you buy it from? Give them an email and I'm sure they'll replace it for you.

I got it from Laughing Hens, and because my broadband is playing up at the moment, I phoned them this morning. The service was superb, they apologised and said it was a prticular problem with bamboo needles but they had another one in stock and would put it in the post today; so with any luck I should get it tomorrow. Can't fault them for their service. Will have to be very kind to the postman from now on!!
Lucy-Lastic 24-05-2006, 20:55 I just made this (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i221/lisahxxx/DSCF0002.jpg) - it might be small but its perfectly formed:hihi: Magic loop is very easy and no ladders:D I will do a how-to post soonish;) I will say though it was a bit akward using 60cm - definitely get a minimum of 80cms to try.

Excellent! I'm glad to hear it's easy too. Is the booklet worth buying, do you think? I'm definitely going to get an 80 cm circular needle - it's just the one you need, yes?
Is that circular one of the famous Addi Turbos? ::awed gasp::

Dont bother getting the booklet - not worth £5.50 unless you want particular instructions on a not very interesting aran weight sock and a baby sock tbh:? When do you want to try this out and I will try and do a Noddys guide by then:D I think you only need 2 needles if you are going to knit 2 socks at the same time - something Im not about to try and not covered in the booklet anyway:D Forgot to say before that I think this might be quite good if you are prone to dropping stitches off the end of dpns - like me. Seems good for socks too as you have to split the 'tube' in half anyway for it to work. I did this from scratch in about 45 mins so it was quite easy to pick up.
Yes it is an Addi turbo - not quite as smooth change between tip and cord as I would have hoped but better than is normal for a circular and very light to hold. I think the slippiness of a metal needle in this case will help with magic loop technique.

Right, I won't bother with the booklet then. Thanks for that. I was going to have a good read of Turra21's link and do a search for info on the web myself.
I think I shall await your guide (with pictures :P). I have the other Jaywalker to complete first and I want to get the Leaf Lace socks done too, as that pattern's been calling out to me for months, so you've got plenty of time as far as I'm concerned. Turra21 might disagree though ;) .
I must say that I'm not a fan of circulars. I find them too slippy and the cord always gets in my way. I did read something about soaking it in warm water for a while to soften it, then gently pulling on it to iron out some of the excess curves. Trouble is, I'd probably pull to hard and snap the thing :hihi: .
I find the join between the cord and the end of the needle a pain too; I'd hoped that the Addis would have eliminated it. Not sure quite how they would have done it, but I lived in hope.
I'm glad the slippiness actually helps with the Magic Loop method, as that's usually my main irritation with circulars. I have seen bamboo circulars though, which would have a little more grip. I might check those out should I ever need to do non-Magic Loop circular knitting.
Lucy-Lastic 25-05-2006, 15:19 Right might try to do my mini-guide over the weekend. It wont need more than one post I should think as you have covered all the basics of socks;)

Thanks for that. I'm just in the middle of downloading it to watch at my leisure. Still haven't bought the 80 cm circular though. Time for another order, I think :) .
Thought I'd do a bit of adventuring this weekend! So with my noro cardi finished all except the buttons (which I haven't bought yet) I thought I'd have a go at toe up socks using the magic loop method but with both socks on the cable at the same time. So far so good, but the yarn doesn't inspire me. It was my eldest daughter's choice and not to my taste but I don't have to wear it I suppose!
Lisa, the link I posted on the elfine thread makes more sense when you do it than when you read it, but you should give the elfines a go!:D
I will try to post pictures later on of both the cardi and the socks.
Good grief, you're brave! Two socks at once? I've clearly got some catching up to do... :)

Oooo thats brave - are these te ones you are doing in LL Old rose - which pattern?:o Which cast on technique did you use btw - I was thinking of 'figure of 8' for the Elfines. Im still only going to do 1 sock at a time:)

Ok, in a 5 second break in the showers at lunchtime I managed to find time to photo the tigger socks (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i217/turra21/tiggersocks1.jpg), as you will see Lisa they aren't my LL. That is reserved for a lacy pair of socks - concertina socks. (http://www.knittingzone.com/catalog/product_info.php?pName=concertina-lace-socks&cName=by-type-footwear-socks-slippers)
I used a figure of 8 cast on which was fine enough once you worked out which needle was no 1 and which was no2.
Note to circular knitting needle makers - "make each needle a differnt colour to assist in figure of 8 cast on"
The other thing I had several goes at was the toe increase. The pattern calls it M1R and M1L and until I realised that you had to sort of twist the stitch, it left too big a hole for my liking. The next hurdle is the heel!!!:)
I'll keep you posted!

I think that wool is quite effective. You have done loads - I feel like I must have had my feet up or something:suspect: I had a play with the figure of 8 cast on today on some scrap wool - it looked fine after I tightened it up. Migt cast on the LL tonight:D
