Here are the ones I remember.
Jimi
The Move
Amen Corner
Pink Floyd
The Nice
All on for fifteen minutes each but Jimi got twenty.
There were two shows that night early/late. Which one were you at?
I remember a guy walking up to the stage at the end and throwing a Union Jack to Jimi that he wrapped around his shoulders as he played his encore.
I think Hendrix appeared in Sheffield a good few years before then..I recall him backing Little Richard when he was only 15 years old..I think I saw him at the Gaumont...and the Rolling Stones were bottom of the bill, they did 2 songs, "Talking about you" ( Chuck Berry), and then their 1st recording "Come on"..
And I didn't think they were any good, in fact my mates and I said they were rubbish compared to some of the Sheffield bands....I've still got the program from the night.
"Here are the ones I remember"
If you remember it, you can't have been there....
As the old saying goes

Think you must be confusing him with someone else.
Hendrix first came to England in September 1966, rehearsed for two months and started touring in December.
His first appearance in Sheffield was January 8th 1967 at the MOJO club.
Hendrix would have been fifteen around 1956.

Sorry, you must have dreamed that story. Jimi arrived in Britain for the first time in September 1966, when he was 24. He never toured Britain with Little Richard or anyone else, other than his own band

The City Hall concert was on 17 November 1967. Other than the bands already mentioned, Eire Apparent and Outer Limits were on the bill
mojoworking 20-05-2004, 23:35 Jimi was part of a much stranger package tour in April 1967. The tour didn't come to Sheffield, but I saw it in Chesterfield.
The line-up was:
The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens, Englebert Humperdinck and Jimi Hendrix!
This was the tour where Jimi first set fire to his guitar.
Thanks - I did not realise that two shows were on that night.
I can remember Andy of Amen Corner kneeling down on stage
at the climax of "Gin House".
I can also recall Pink Floyds Lightshow - superb (At the time).
Those were the days.
Mojo - incredible line up - Hendrix and Humperdinck on the same
bill !!!!
What venue in Cheserfield was used ?

It was the ABC Cinema.
I recall that Jimi closed the first half and all the mums & dads who had come to see Englebert walked out!
I looked this up on "Google" all about Little Richard..
(After three years of little success as a gospel performer Richard went back to Rock and Roll.. October, 1962 he began a tour of England and year later toured Europe with the Rolling Stones as his opening act.
A number of record companies took notice and invited him back to the studio, but they were only interested in repackaging his old hits. Specialty, in five sessions attempted to rekindle the 1957 magic.
During this period Jimi Hendrix was briefly Richard's guitarists.)
The story has it that Little Richard sacked Jimmy because he looked too good on stage, and took the limelight off him.

It's true that Hendrix was in Little Richard's band on and off between 1960-64, but he never toured Britain with Richard.
The first time Jimi left America was September 1966 with Chas Chandler (bass player of the Animals) who brought him to London and became his manager.
I was there and seem to remember Pink Floyd were completely in the dark - it could have been anyone performing.
I have since sold the flyer from this concert, which was a freebit for anyone to pick up for £250!! My friend has searched all over for hers but unable to locate.
We went to the first house concert and not old enough to be let out later.
The memories - having seen Jimi Hendrix has done wonders for my streetcred ever my kids are so impressed!!
RoyalRegular 07-10-2005, 14:35 I remember see Hendrix at the City Hall in '67 along with all the other bands mentioned. The thing i remember most is him squirting lighter fluid all over his guitar, a white Fender Strat that i would've killed for, and setting it on fire!
The week before the Hendrix concert, there was another one featuring The Who, The Herd and several more bands that i can't quite remember....and all this for about 7/6d.
RiffRaff 07-10-2005, 17:51 I seem to recall that apart from Hendrix, I really wanted to see The Nice, who had just released their first album, The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack.....
Bear in mind that Keith Emerson was THE keyboardist of note at the time, I was very surprised that the band got not only a lukewarm welcome, but were also virtually booed off stage.
I also remember that my ticket cost the same as a new pair of Lee Rider jeans (£1/12/6 or maybe £1/17/6).....
Think that another band that was featured was The End, who were managed/produced by the Stones' Bill Wyman....

There was some negotiation between Hendrix and Emerson about forming a new band together which they would call "HELP"
(Hendrix, Emerson, Lake and Palmer)
Amazing value at these concerts. We paid 7/6d which wasn't a lot even then, you didn't need to save up. Also went to see Led Zep for £1 around 1973 I think. A bit different from the £50 to see Queen at the Arena this year. I saw Queen at the City Hall too and fell in love with Freddie, I was so young didn't realise he was gay!
By coincidence, both Pink Floyd and their pscychadelic lightshow and Jimi Hendrix featured on Sounds of the Sixties on BBC Four on Friday night.

It was great wasn't it?
Keith Emerson was also on, with his famous rendition of Leonard Bernstein's America, including daggers in the keys and burning the flag - phenomenal!!
It occurred to me that, brilliant as the Floyd were at Live8, how good would it have been if Syd had been there?
I miss him...
I read an article about this just before Live8 and he's living somewhere down south, but doesn't know what planet he's on or what day it is!! Such a shame, life has taken its' toll. Doesn't even answer to Syd......

He's living in his mother's house in Cambridge where he's been since the early 70s. I believe his mother has now passed away, so he lives alone, with various people coming in to look after him.
It's not simply "life" that has taken its toll on Syd, it's all that LSD he took.

The Dream
The Tremeloes

These were my first 2 Gigs, been to many more since but none can match the Hendrix/Floyd one.
By the way I have still got both concert programs and the ticket stubbs
seriessix 27-09-2006, 00:23 Do you recall the Flotd set lists?
You must of read Mason's Inside Out too I bet.
I was going to say that I thiught a female solo singer was also on the Hendrix gig called Sharon Tandy (wonder what happened to her), she had a moderate hit out called stay with me baby.

sorry but a lot of years have passed since then. I think that they must have played their first 3 singles and tracks from Piper at the gates of dawn, but I do remember them playing Inerstellar Overdrive.
As for Mason's Inside Out, not got it yet as I am in the middle of reading Joe Cockers Biography. I must write to Santa for it:hihi: :hihi:

can't recall her, she's not listed in the programme
been trying to find out more about her on the web, but nothing about any tour with Hendrix. I'll keep looking
Copy of my post from guitarist thread.
There's a tale about Jimi Hendrix who played at The Troutbeck Hotel in Ilkley in 1967 which is on the Crossbeck Rd road where my son now lives. He had just achieved first success with Hey Joe and 700 people turned up to little more than a pub venue and police shut it down during second song. Hendrix was last seen having fish and chips at Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley. Wish I'd been there. (gig not Harrys)
Apparently he played at International in Leeds night before and only about 12 people turned up;

. . . and I was told that The Move blew Hendrix off the stage.
I went to both The Who and Jimi Hendrix shows in '67 and if there was a volume contest, the 3 piece Hendrix Experience won it hands down. Still got ringing in my ears 40+ years later.
