View Full Version : Was I unlawfully held captive at Walter Heselwood's scrap yard today?

I don't normally 'do' scrap but due to the high price presently paid I have been saving heavier items I get on clearances and weighing them in when I have gathered a load.

So today I went to Walter Heselwoods scrapyard. The grabber operator had a problem with me as soon as I entered the yard, he said they would shortly be closing for lunch at 12:15 and I had to get a move on.

So I got a move on, tipped the scrap and at 12:17made towards the exit only to find him closing the gates in my face and padlocking them - another ten seconds and I would have been out of there......

So there I sat for 45 mins whilst the guy had his sarnies, alone and captive in Walter Heselwoods scrapyard :suspect:

Was I held illegally?

I would say yes as you were "detained from going about your lawful business"

This is of course unless you nicked the scrap :hihi:

Best check which a solicitor though

You were being unlawfully held against your will, which is an offence.

I'd get a solicitor involved and contact the press - would make a good story! You might even get some dosh to compensate for the 'stress' and inconvenience

Perhaps it was your 'magnetic' personality that held you back!

You should report him to the police. It'll make him think twice before pulling that stunt again

I bet that they couldn't wait to off load you at the end of the 45 mins

You should have took your sarnies and had a lunch break too.

We were once locked in an Italian supermarket for an hour - it was Siesta time and the staff switched the lights off, walked out and closed the shutters

Did you take a picture of the locked gates (from inside the compound)?

Was I held illegally?

Yep. But without proof (ie photos (see above):D or independant witnesses) it'll be your word against theirs:(.

Scarey.... must have been a mistake though surely.... there's no way I would leave a teabag on my property. :D :D

Jake, I have to admit that we partook of a nice fruity red, fresh bread and cheese for our lunch during our entrapment...mmmmmmm....

The staff were amazed when they opened up...they shouted something at us in Italian......anyway I digress

If you were posting this thread from inside the scrapyard Draggletail..I think then, you would have a case...should we post the ransome note on 'General Chit-Chat', 'Sheffield Chat' or on the 'Entertainment' section?

Ciao

Entertainment :D
True story though ....... and when the guys came back to open the gates I was in the cab facing them, engine revving ..... all three of them entered the yard looking very closely at their steel toe caps .... no eye contact was made :D

The manager on the weigh bridge looked a bit shocked when I told him, but said 'nowt :suspect:

Perhaps as well as a 'Going Out' section we should have a 'Staying In'? :hihi:

It was quite atmospheric Tony. Left the dog in the cab and had a bit of a walk round in the mud, looking at the rain sloshing of the mountains of scrap. Half expected to come across a pickup in an undisturbed part of the yard with the skeleton of a previous captive punter :D

The chain on the gate never ceased to look sinister. I definitely had an unsettling 'locked in' feeling.

Fortunately I found 'emergency provisions' in the cab in the form of half a bottle of three week old tap water.
No butties though Teabag.

Not only could you have taken a photo you could have also phoned the police to report that you were being held against your will. Easy to think of it in retrospect though!

You could have sent out for a pizza and got a witness ! :)

Retrospect eh :hihi:

"Hey, Pizza Boy! I'm a prisoner in here! Take a picture and call for help."

You could have also phoned the fire brigade and asked if they could come and cut the gate off to free you....don't know if they would though. Or if you had any tools in the car, you could have had a go yourself. I would have been tempted, doing maximum damage in the mean time of course ;)

I have lots of dismantling tools in the cab including a hacksaw, 4LB long shafted hammer, crowbar.......

Oh the shame

I'd have just smacked him with the crowbar, just locking the gates, infront of you.

Or used the big crane thing to pick up the portacabin he was in. (assuming he was in one of those). :hihi:

Do you carry superglue?

Nip back now & superglue the lock while theyre out.

That'll teach em

I would have nicked a load of expensive scrap and weighed it in elsewhere, f**k em. To keep you detained on suspicion they have to announce they are making a citizens arrest.

No mate, they beggared of the site and I was the only one there :(

Portacabin empty, the two crane compartments empty.

Just the howling wind making eery noises around the scrap heaps, rain sloshing down and obscuring my vision as I lurched around the yard .......
sorry, I'm embellishing a bit (had a couple of pints :D ) - wouldn't want to be there now (midnight) bet it's exactly like that. Brrrrr

Go back another day & have an 'accident' with a 'witness' and phone claims direct
