:help:

I'm desperatly trying to decide which 6th form to go to in September. I have narrowed my search down to King Edward VI, Silverdale and Lady Manners (in Derbyshire). I'm hoping to do english language, art, geography and either french or business studies. Has anyone got any info which could sway my decision?

To the best of my knowledge they're all alrite. Depending where you live LadyManners might be a bit of a pain in the winter prhaps?

I am a parent with a son that is currently coming to the end of his A levels at King Edwards. All I am willing to say is that I wish he had chosen Tapton or Notre Dame.

I have friends whose teenagers have been to Silverdale and have enjoyed it and done very well. (one of them went to Cambridge and is now teaching in Spain).

If you went to any of the open evenings you must have a feeling at which one you felt more comfortable.

excuse me but me being someone who smokes cannabis does not have any relevance to giving advice to someone who seeks the best 6th form, ive dont it at kind edwards myself and came out with 3 a levels between a-c.even while smoking weed in my spare time, dont be so quick to judge people mate.

the teachers at king edwards are friendly and always willing to help, and there teaching abilitys are some of the best you'll find in sheffield.

I've never set foot in any of this trio except LM for music rehearsals! However, I've good reason to believe that all of them (in the V1 form) will measure up academically if your attitude and focus is correct.
I worked at High Storrs and always found their results comparable to Silverdale's - ie very good. My daughter went to Tapton and her pals who went to King Edwards got the grades they needed - very similar results.
There's no point my guessing just to advise you but if you do the work set and apply yourself, I think you'll get your grades at any of those schools mentioned.

And I think this shows the capabilities of the English Dept. there very well... ;)

im just wondering what makes u think this? have u been there? (my problem is trying to sort out personal experiences from 'my mate says', which im at a loss with where i live!: confused: ! )

Ive looked round silverdale, and i did like it a lot, its just no one from my skool is going there, as opposed to the other 2 skools, so im wondering if it's worth it?) Btw if u did go there, what subjects did u do? and are there any teachers who r at all difficult? its this kind of 'inside info' that im trying to search out...!

Just to throw another one into the pot... especially since you are considering outside of Sheff...Chesterfield College might also be a good option - it's in the top 10% of all the FE colleges in the country

A rational perspective here. If you are eliminating Silverdale as no friends are going there, why don't you ask the people you know why they are opting for either Lady Manners or King Edward V11 schools?
Pupils who view 'teachers as difficult' may well find that they are deemed 'difficult' because they are demanding and require that the pupil shows effort, attendance and aptitude. Teachers are there to help, not to be obstructive and I trust would want their pupils to succeed just as they would their own children.
Things are worth it if you achieve your goal, albeit university or vocational course. I can tell you that many people look back and glean satisfaction from things that weren't easily achieved.
I can only reiterate from my teaching experience, in west Sheffield schools, that if the pupils have decent GCSE results, they are focused on what they want to achieve, are prepared to listen, work and read around a subject, they usually get the grades they require - and I think that would be true at any of your options.

Lady Manners has an excellent sixth form, the worst thing about the place is that it's in Bakewell. But if it's just a decent education you're after you can't go far wrong.

The reputation of the school is importnat of course, but in my opinion it's best to go somewhere with friends, rather than having to start all over again. Remember the majority of the six form students at all the schools you have mentioned will have been there since year 7 and will probably already have established friendship groups. All the sixth forms you've mentioned are decent, so why not go to the one where you'll have most friends and therefore in my opinion will be happiest.

I just left Notre Dame, and I would seriously recommend the VI Form to anybody wishing to study for their A Levels in a dedicated, friendly and helpful environment.

The teaching staff are fantastic and passionate about what they do, and there is a great sense of community-you feel like an individual, there to learn and be challenged, rather than some cypher making up the humbers for some government quota. The standard of exam results at Notre Dame is among the very best in the city, and I would seriously urge you to consider applying there.

And no, it's not just a bunch of fundamentalist Bible-bashers. I'm an atheist, as were many- if not, frankly, most- of my fellow pupils, and I didn't find the occassional prayers and masses in any way a waste of time or 'in-your-face'. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a Catholic school; I feel truly lucky for having had the opportunity to study at such an awesome place.
